Smoking and Vaping at UK Airports (2026 Guide): Where You Can and Can’t Light Up
Quick answer for smokers & vapers
UK law bans smoking and vaping inside all airport terminals. Most airports only allow it outside, before security. A handful – including Aberdeen, Bristol, Cardiff, East Midlands, Leeds Bradford, Liverpool, and Manchester T1 & T2 – still have designated airside areas after security. Heathrow, Gatwick, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stansted, Luton, and Birmingham have no post-security smoking or vaping facilities at all.
Planning to fly from the UK? Whether you smoke cigarettes or use an e-cigarette, knowing the rules before you reach the terminal saves stress – and potentially a fine. This guide covers every major UK airport’s smoking and vaping policy, updated for 2026, including the disposable vape ban that came into force on 1 June 2025 and the new Tobacco and Vapes Act 2026.

🚭 2025–2026 Regulatory Updates
- Disposable vape ban: Single-use disposable vapes have been illegal to sell in the UK since 1 June 2025. If you vape, travel with a rechargeable, refillable device.
- Tobacco and Vapes Act 2026: Received Royal Assent on 29 April 2026, introducing advertising restrictions and further regulation of vaping products.
- Vaping Products Duty: A new £2.20 per 10ml excise duty on e-liquid comes into force on 1 October 2026 – expect airport retail prices to rise.

Flying with Vapes in 2026: What’s Changed
The rules around vaping devices on flights have evolved significantly. Here’s what every traveller needs to know before packing their device.
📦 Disposable Vape Ban – in force since 1 June 2025
Single-use disposable vapes are now illegal to sell in the UK. Travel with a rechargeable, refillable device. Disposables bought before the ban or purchased abroad may still be carried in hand luggage for personal use, but cannot be sold or supplied within the UK.
How to pack your vape for a flight
- Hand luggage only. Vape devices, spare batteries, and e-liquids must go in your carry-on bag – never in checked hold luggage. Lithium batteries in the hold are a fire hazard and will be removed by security.
- Liquids rule applies. E-liquid bottles must be 100ml or under and placed in your clear liquids bag alongside toiletries. Prefilled pods count as liquids too.
- Switch the device off. Turn your vape fully off before going through security and activate any device lock to prevent accidental firing.
- Empty refillable tanks. Cabin pressure changes cause leaks – empty your tank before flying or use sealed prefilled pods.
- Protect spare batteries. Loose lithium batteries can short-circuit. Use a dedicated battery case or tape the terminals before packing.
- No charging on board. Most airlines prohibit charging vape devices during the flight.
- Check your destination’s laws. Countries including Thailand, Singapore, and UAE ban vaping devices entirely – possession can result in fines or confiscation even in transit.
Smoking and vaping on the flight itself
Neither smoking nor vaping is permitted on any commercial flight to or from the UK. The no-smoking signs remain on for the entire journey. If you need nicotine on a long-haul flight, nicotine patches, gum, or pouches are the only compliant alternatives – they can be used on board without any restriction.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. UK law bans smoking in all enclosed public spaces, including every airport terminal. You cannot smoke in departure lounges, boarding gate areas, or anywhere inside the terminal building. All smoking must take place in designated outdoor areas outside the terminal, before you go through security. The same rule applies to vaping and e-cigarettes – they are treated identically to traditional cigarettes at all UK airports.
Only a handful of UK airports provide designated smoking or vaping areas airside (after security). As of 2026 these include: Aberdeen (near Gate 5, £1 fee), Bournemouth (follow departures signs), Bristol (beside Gate 4), Cardiff (outdoor area by Gate 2), East Midlands (courtyard near Castle Rock bar), Leeds Bradford (ground floor behind sports bar, £1 fee), Liverpool (lower level near Kissing Gate bar), Manchester T1 (near food court), and Manchester T2 (near Gate 300). All other major airports – including Heathrow, Gatwick, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stansted, Luton, and Birmingham – do not allow any smoking or vaping after security.
At Gatwick Airport, smoking and vaping are only permitted outside the terminal buildings, before you go through security. Both the North and South Terminals have dedicated outdoor smoking zones on the departures forecourt. Once you have passed through security, there are no smoking or vaping facilities anywhere airside. Make sure you have your last cigarette or vape before entering the terminal building.
At Heathrow, smoking and vaping are banned in all departure lounges. Terminals 1, 3, and 5 have no post-security smoking areas – use the designated outdoor areas outside each terminal before going through security. Terminals 2 and 4 have historically had small outdoor terraces for airside passengers, but these facilities have been subject to change. Verify directly with Heathrow before you travel. Connecting passengers cannot access landside smoking areas without exiting the secure zone and re-clearing security.
It depends on your terminal. Terminals 1 and 2 both have outdoor terraces after security where vaping is permitted – near the T1 food court and near Gate 300 in T2. Terminal 3 has no post-security vaping or smoking area; use the outdoor area outside the terminal before security. No vaping is allowed inside any Manchester Airport terminal building.
Yes, but only in your carry-on hand luggage – never in checked baggage. Vape devices and spare batteries must stay in the cabin due to lithium battery fire risk. You cannot use your vape on the plane or charge it during the flight. E-liquid bottles must be 100ml or under and go in your clear liquids bag. Since 1 June 2025, single-use disposable vapes can no longer be sold in the UK, so travel with a rechargeable, refillable device. Always check the vaping laws of your destination – some countries (including Thailand, Singapore, and UAE) ban vaping devices entirely.
No. Smoking is banned on all commercial flights to and from the UK, and the no-smoking signs stay on throughout the journey. This ban covers e-cigarettes and vaping devices as well as traditional cigarettes. If you need nicotine during a long flight, nicotine gum, patches, or pouches can be used on board without any restriction.
Yes. Carrying cigarettes in hand luggage is perfectly legal when flying from the UK – there is no restriction on transporting tobacco for personal use through UK airport security. Be aware of duty-free import limits at your destination. For example, the EU generally allows 200 cigarettes per person duty-free. You cannot smoke on the plane or inside the airport terminal.
Duty-free cigarettes are available at UK airports on international routes (you must be flying outside the UK). For vaping products: since the disposable vape ban in June 2025, airport shops only stock rechargeable and refillable devices. Not all shops carry vaping products, so stock up before you travel rather than relying on airport availability. A new Vaping Products Duty of £2.20 per 10ml comes into force on 1 October 2026, which will push retail prices up.
Smoking in a non-designated area of a UK airport is a criminal offence under the Health Act 2006. Enforcement officers can issue an on-the-spot fixed penalty notice – fines typically range from £50 to £200, with higher penalties for repeated offences. In serious cases you could be denied boarding. The same penalties apply to vaping in prohibited areas.
No. Airport lounges in the UK are smoke-free, just like the rest of the terminal – including private pay-per-use lounges and airline lounges. There are no smoking sections in any UK airport lounge. If you want to smoke before using a lounge, use the outdoor smoking area outside the terminal first, then proceed through security into the lounge.
Yes – once you have collected your baggage, cleared customs, and exited the terminal building, you can use the designated smoking zones outside the arrivals area. You cannot smoke inside the terminal while still in baggage reclaim or customs. If you are connecting through a UK airport, you will not be able to access landside smoking areas without leaving the secure zone and re-clearing security – which may not be feasible during a short connection.
Nicotine Alternatives for the Journey
If your departure airport has no airside smoking area, or you’re facing a long-haul flight, these options are fully permitted on board and at security:
- Nicotine patches – apply before boarding for steady, background relief throughout a long flight
- Nicotine gum – fast-acting and discreet; widely available at airport pharmacies landside
- Nicotine pouches (e.g. VELO, ZYN, Nordic Spirit) – tobacco-free, smoke-free, no equipment needed; place under the lip and use anywhere on board with no liquids rules to worry about
- Nicotine nasal spray (prescription) – useful for heavier dependence on long-haul flights; speak to your GP before travelling
Timing Your Pre-Flight Smoke or Vape
If your airport has no airside area, build these steps into your arrival routine:
- Arrive 15–20 minutes earlier than usual if you want to smoke or vape before security – the outdoor area can be a short walk from drop-off or the car park
- Find the smoking area before entering the terminal – once you’re through the doors, it’s too late at most airports
- Allow time to stub out and dispose of your cigarette or pod safely before re-entering, and wash your hands before security
- If you’re connecting at an airport with no airside facilities, pack nicotine pouches or gum for the layover
- Check your airport’s website before you travel – facilities and policies change, and this guide is reviewed periodically but cannot guarantee real-time accuracy
Last reviewed June 2026. Airport smoking and vaping facilities can change without notice. Always verify the current position with your departure airport before travelling. Yep. Definitely a smoking area in Heathrow T2 near Gate A5. Used it a few times this year. The signage to it is s bit vague. There’s an escalator down to it and a lift back up.
terminal 2 have smoking area near door A1 still working and with signs from central plaza
10/08/2023
This information is out of date. There is definitely a smoking area next to gate A5 at Heathow Terminal 2. I used it last week
I think it is very unfair not to have smoking areas after security, especially when on a long haul flight.
Many of us who suffer from mental health issues rely greatly on our cigarettes to minimise stress and anxiety. I also suffer with borderline personality disorder, which is very difficult, if not impossible, to control, especially without our smokes.
It is hard enough on a long flight, but not being able to smoke for some time, maybe an hour or more, prior to flying is extremely difficult.
Why are smokers so discriminated against?
