Park & Ride parking, such as Flyparks Park & Fly, is usually the most economical form of parking at Exeter Airport.

On-airport parking: How it works

Exeter, like most other airports, has parking facilities within the airport perimeter, within walking distance of the terminal.

Offering convenient parking and quick access to the check-in desks, on-airport parking is a good fit for those prioritising time over cost.

Parking at Exeter Airport Short Stay Car Park 2, for example, is easy. You just follow the signs to the car park, find a parking space and unload your luggage. The walk to the terminal takes just two to five minutes. This type of parking is “self-park”, which means you keep your keys and park the car in a parking bay yourself, rather than handing it over to a valet driver.

On-airport car parks benefit from the tight security that operates within the airport complex.

Best for: travellers looking to simply “park and fly”; leaving their car within walking distance of the airport terminal.

Off-airport parking: How it works

Off-airport car parks are located outside of the airport grounds and usually require a short shuttle bus transfer to the terminal.

Some off-airport car parks are self-park, which means you keep your keys, and your car stays in the parking bay where you parked it. Others, such as Flyparks Park & Fly, operate as a park and ride type of parking, which means you drop your car at the Reception area of the car park and hand over your keys. Your car will be parked for you, while you hop on the shuttle bus to the airport terminal. Your car will then be returned to the Reception area for you to collect at the end of your trip.

All off-airport parking offered by APH is in a properly secure parking facility.

Best for: travellers looking for the most economical type of airport parking, without compromising on security.

Meet and greet parking: How it works

Meet & Greet parking is also an on-airport type of parking, which also avoids the need to look for a parking space.

Offering the ultimate in convenience, you simply drive to the designated meeting point, usually right next to the terminal, where you hand your vehicle and car keys over to your Meet & Greet operator. Your car will be taken to a secure parking facility, while you take your bags and walk to the check-in desks.

Upon your return, your vehicle will be brought back to the terminal for you to collect.

Searches for a suitable site for an aerodrome at Exeter began in 1932, although it was not until 1937 that the airport became operational, with the Exeter Corporation having had to make a compulsory purchase order on the land they had identified as suitable.

The first aircraft to land at the airport was a Leopard Moth, which was carrying film reels of the coronation of George VI for Exeter’s cinemas, and the first regular flights were operated by Jersey Air to the Channel Islands, followed shortly by Railway Air services to Plymouth and Cardiff.

During the second world war, Exeter Airport became an RAF Sector Station and headquarters of the Polish day-fighter Wing No 2. The Polish Air Force 307 Squadron was also stationed at Exeter.

Airline operations commenced in 1952 by Jersey Airlines, although the airport remained a joint RAF/Civil airfield throughout the 1960s. In 1961, F&J Mann Airways, operating as Westpoint Aviation, began ad hoc passenger and freight services, eventually launching their first scheduled service, from Newquay via Exeter to London, in 1963. Other services from Exeter during this period included Birmingham and Manchester, while flights to the Isles of Scilly and Austria commenced in 1973.

Improvements to the runway began in 1981 and in 1982 a new passenger terminal was constructed, establishing Exeter as an important airport in the West Country. In 2007, annual passenger numbers exceeded one million for the first time. Several changes of ownership led to the purchase of the airport by the Patriot Aerospace division of the Rigby Group, which owns Coventry Airport, in 2013.

In 2019, Exeter ranked fourth out of 30 airports for customer satisfaction in a Which? magazine survey and passenger numbers once again surpassed the one million mark, thanks in part to the introduction of new services by Ryanair.

Terminals

There is one terminal at Exeter Airport. If you are travelling to the airport by car, it is a good idea to book your airport parking in advance for the best prices and availability.

Once inside the terminal building, you’ll find the check-in area right opposite the entrance, with check-in desks and self-service kiosks. After checking in, head for security to the left-hand side of the concourse and proceed through the screening process to the departures hall and boarding gates.

Check-in

The check-in desks are opposite the main terminal entrance. Make sure all your travel documentation including your passport is valid and up to date in advance of travel. Some countries require passport validity to be a minimum of six months, but all countries have different requirements. You can refer to the government foreign travel advice as well as advice from your airline.

For recommended check-in times, refer to the documentation from your airline. You must allow for potential queues through security of up to 45 minutes, bearing in mind that must be ready to board your flight 30 mins prior to the departure time. The check-in desks for charter flights usually open around two and a half hours prior to departure and close one hour prior.

If you are travelling with Ryanair, you must check in online and print your boarding pass before arriving at the airport. Alternatively, you can download your boarding pass on the Ryanair app. When you arrive at the airport you can proceed directly to security and the departures hall.

There are certain items that you are not permitted to carry in your hand luggage. Check hand luggage restrictions at home before you pack.

Main travel connections

By car
Exeter Airport is around four miles east of the city centre and is easily reached by car via the A30. If you are driving your own vehicle, make sure you book your airport parking in advance for the best prices and availability.
 
  From Tiverton to Exeter Airport is 15 miles, via the A396.

  From Exmouth to Exeter Airport is 9.4 miles, via the A376.

  From Torquay to Exeter Airport is 26 miles, via the A380.

  From Taunton to Exeter Airport is 30 miles, via the M5.

  From Plymouth to Exeter Airport is 49 miles, via the A38.

By bus
Stagecoach operate bus service 4A between St David’s Station and the airport via the city centre, Honiton Road P&R, Science Park and Cranbrook. Departures are regular throughout the day, although only hourly on Sundays.

By rail
The nearest railways station to Exeter Airport is three miles away at Cranbrook, where you’ll find trains to/from London Waterloo, Exeter Central and Exeter St David’s.

Exeter Central is six miles away and also offers a service to London Waterloo, as well as to Exmouth and other destinations throughout North and South Devon.

Exeter St David’s is seven miles from the airport and offers a service to London Paddington, as well as to Exmouth via Exeter Central, Plymouth and other destinations throughout North and South Devon and Cornwall.

Digby & Sowton is five miles from the airport with trains to Exeter St David’s, Exmouth and destinations throughout North and South Devon.

Tiverton Parkway is eighteen miles from the airport with trains to London Paddington.

Drop-off and pick-up

Car Park 1
You can drop-off and pick-up passengers in the designated drop-off and pick-up bays in Car Park 1, opposite the main terminal. The drop-off and pick-up parking fee is £4.00 for up to 30 minutes. Car Park 1 operates Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology to record vehicle registration numbers as they enter the car park. Payment is made by card machine at the exit barrier, or by other payment methods at the Pay Stations or Car Park Customer Service Office.

  • 1 – 2 hours £10.00

Blue Badge holders receive a free period for drop-off and pick-up in Car Park 1, or for pick-up in Car Park 2 for passengers arriving in to Arrivals 2. You need to use the intercom call button at the entry barrier to the car park to request the free period, and again at the exit barrier to request exit.

Note that stopping is not permitted on any of the airport terminal approach roads, by law.

Short Stay car park charges

There are two Short Stay car parks at Exeter Airport: Car Park 1 and Car Park 2. Car Park 1 is less than 50m from the terminal entrance, while Car Park 2 is just under 70m from the terminal entrance. You can turn up and pay on the day at both car parks and there are no vehicle height restrictions.

Fast-track security lane

A Fast Track security service provides priority access for passengers to the security screening process. Although it is mandatory for all passengers to complete the security procedures and follow the security regulations, a Fast Track security lane means you can beat the queues during busy periods. Fast Track passes can usually be purchased from the Fast Track Kiosk, or online in advance of travel.

Please check with Exeter Airport prior to your date of departure if a Fast Track service will be operational for your flight.

Special assistance and disabled facilities

Special Assistance

Special assistance bookings should be requested directly with your airline or travel agent at the time of booking your flight, or at least 48 hours prior to travel. Passenger requirements will be passed to the airport’s Special Assistance team, who will be able to help from point of arrival at the airport, as required

If you make your own way into the terminal, you can go straight to the Help Point at the Assistance Desk in the check-in hall.

If you are travelling with your own mobility aid, such as a wheelchair or scooter, you need to inform the airline at the time of booking and advise them of its specifications. You will also need to advise the staff at check-in of any need for wheelchair carriage and arrangements will be made for electric wheelchair battery isolation.

Disabled parking

If you are arriving by car, you can use the Help Point ‘Call Button’ at the car park entry barrier to contact the car park Customer Service office. Alternatively, if necessary, you can attract attention on the CCTV by flashing the vehicle headlights.

If you are being dropped off at the airport, Blue Badge holders receive a free period for drop-off and pick-up in Car Park 1, or for pick-up in Car Park 2 for passengers arriving in to Arrivals 2. You need to use the intercom call button at the entry barrier to the car park to request the free period, and again at the exit barrier to request exit.

Car Park 1 is 50m from the terminal entrance, from where the check-in desks are a further 20m, security a further 30m and boarding gate a further 20-50m. From the boarding gate to the aircraft is 120m.

There are Blue Badge parking bays in Car Parks P1, P2, P3 and P4.

Security

If you need to carry liquid medicines, inhalers or foodstuffs of more than 100ml in your hand luggage, you may need to provide a supporting prescription or doctor’s note. You must check with your airline in advance of travel.
EpiPens and Insulin Injection Pens do not require supporting documentation, either for hand luggage or for bags in the hold.
If you have a pacemaker or other medical device, make sure you advise the security staff before proceeding through the metal detector archway.
There is a private area for manual searches, if required.

Accessible toilets

Accessible toilets are available throughout the airport terminal in the check-in hall, departures lounge, boarding gate area and arrivals hall.

Mobility equipment

You can remain in your own mobility equipment all the way to the departure gate. Airport staff will be on hand to ensure it is made safe for carriage in the hold of the aircraft.

You must confirm the specifications of your equipment, such as weight and dimensions and, if electric, how to power it off, with the airline in advance.

Assistance dogs

Recognised assistance dogs may travel in the cabin with Special Assistance passengers on some airlines; you must check with the airline or your travel agent at the time of booking. You will need to provide name, age and weight of the dog.

Hidden disabilities

Exeter Airport participates in the Hidden Disability Sunflower Lanyard scheme. Sunflower lanyards are available from the Special Assistance Desk in the check-in area. Sunflower lanyards are recognised by airport staff as identifying someone who may need some extra assistance or consideration when passing through the airport or boarding the aircraft. Additional help for those with hidden disabilities can be provided as follows:

Hearing impairment

BSL trained staff to assist those who are hearing impaired.

Sight impairment

Staff trained by Guide Dogs for the Blind to guide sight-impaired passengers.

Colostomy and Stoma

Security staff are trained to deal with this condition.

Dementia

Exeter Airport is dementia friendly, with staff trained by the local Primary Care Group as “Dementia Friends.”

Quiet Room

Special Assistance passengers can request entry to the airport’s Quiet Room from the Special Assistance Desk. The Quiet Room is designed to be a refuge away from the noise and bright lights of the departures lounge. The room is intended for those with hidden disabilities, such as autism, and as a place where anxious travellers can relax, contemplate spirituality or in prayer.

Family facilities

Security

You are permitted to carry sufficient baby milk, baby food and sterilised water for your journey, even if it exceeds 100ml. There is no need for a clear resealable bag. All food and drink will be machine tested.

Note that formula and baby food are not sold at Exeter Airport.
 
Be prepared in advance and note that the following items must be placed in a tray to go through the x-ray machine:

  • liquids under 100ml (which have been placed in a sealed clear plastic bag)
  • oversized liquids including sterilised water, baby milk and baby food
  • electricals including laptops and games consoles
  • any bags and items from prams or buggies

All items must be screened – including teddies and toys – so you might want to let little ones know in advance that their best cuddly friends are in for a little adventure!

Baby changing

There are baby changing facilities throughout the terminal, both before security and after security.

Pushchairs

If you are travelling with a pushchair or buggy, you can usually take it right up to the gate, just before you board your flight. However, different airlines have different restrictions so please check with them in advance. Collapsible buggies are normally permitted in addition to the parents’ luggage allowance but please check with your airline before travel. Infants may also have their own small baggage allowance.

Business facilities

Exeter Airport has its own dedicated corporate aviation facilities, XLR Executive Jet Centres, for chartered and private corporate aircraft. The centre is separate to the main terminal building and has a dedicated VIP lounge and crew facilities.

Executive lounge

Within the main airport terminal, you’ll find the Executive Lounge on the first floor, with runway views, comfortable seating, unlimited free WiFi, newspapers, magazines and complimentary drinks and snacks. You can make a booking at the kiosks prior to security or at the Executive Lounge reception desk. You can also book online. Cardholders such as Diners Club, Dragon Pass, Lounge Pass and Priority Pass are welcome.

Chapel

Exeter Airport has a Quiet Room where passengers of all faiths can come to pray, or for spiritual contemplation. The room is also available to Special Assistance passengers with hidden disabilities, such as autism.

Food and drink

You can grab a coffee or a bite to eat before you fly, either before security or in the departures hall, near to the boarding gates. Cafés and bars are open according to flight schedules.

Smoking and vaping are not permitted anywhere inside the terminal building at Exeter Airport.

Duty-free shopping

Shop for your favourite brands and duty-free liquor in the World Duty Free store, after security. To save time, use the Reserve & Collect service, which is available up to one month prior to departure. You don’t need to pay for your items until you collect them at the airport. Orders must be placed at least 24 hours prior to travel.
