You ride to work every day. You know exactly how to dodge the traffic, find a spot, and get moving faster than anyone in a car. So why should getting to the airport be any different?
The answer is: it doesn’t have to be. With around 1.4 million motorbikes registered on UK roads, plenty of riders fly regularly – and most major UK airports do make provision for bikes. Some offer completely free dedicated bays. Others charge half the car rate. A handful charge full car prices. And one doesn’t accept motorbikes at all.
This guide covers every major UK airport, tells you exactly where to park, what it costs, whether you can pre-book, and what to watch out for. We’ve also added the answers to the questions riders actually ask – like why off-airport car parks won’t take your bike, and how secure your motorcycle will actually be while you’re away.
Riding to the Airport? Do This First
- Check the table below to find your airport and see whether parking is free, discounted or full price
- Note whether pre-booking is required – some airports need you to call ahead or reserve online, others are turn-up-and-park
- Find the specific parking area for bikes at your airport – parking in a standard car bay could mean paying the full car rate
- Bring your own security – most airport motorbike bays do not have anchor points, so bring a lock and consider a cover
- Call ahead if in doubt – policies change, and a quick call to the airport parking team takes two minutes

Airport-by-Airport Guide: Motorbike Parking at Every UK Airport
Below you’ll find everything you need to know for each airport – exact parking locations, costs, pre-booking instructions and real-world tips. Policies can change, so if you’re planning a trip, call ahead to confirm before you set off.
Gatwick Airport – Motorbike Parking
Gatwick provides free motorbike parking at both the South Terminal and North Terminal. In each of the short-stay car parks, look for yellow hatched bays along the sides of each parking level – these are the designated motorcycle areas.
- Pre-booking: Not available – first come, first served
- Cost: Free in designated motorcycle bays
- Watch out: Park in a standard car bay and you will be charged the full car rate. The airport may also remove bikes parked outside the proper bays
- Security note: No anchor points are provided – bring your own lock
Real situation: You’re flying from Gatwick’s South Terminal on a 6am Ryanair flight. You ride down the night before, park in the yellow hatched bays in the Short Stay car park, and walk across to check in. Free parking, no booking required, right next to the terminal. Just make sure you’re in the hatched bays – not a standard space.
Heathrow Airport – Motorbike Parking
Heathrow has dedicated motorbike bays at all four terminals – and they’re all free. The exact location differs by terminal, so check before you go:
- Terminal 2: Cressida Road, near the Hilton Garden Inn
- Terminal 3: Rear of Short Stay Car Park 1A/5, right of exit via Chester Road
- Terminal 4: Opposite the arrivals forecourt
- Terminal 5: Adjacent to the Terminal 5 short-stay car park
- Pre-booking: Not available – just turn up and use the motorcycle area
- Cost: Free in dedicated motorbike bays
- Watch out: Park in a standard car space and normal charges apply – do not assume any space is fine for a bike
Aberdeen Airport – Motorbike Parking
Aberdeen Airport has around 20 designated motorcycle spaces in the short-stay car park, available on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Pre-booking: Not available
- Cost: Free in designated motorcycle bays
- Watch out: With only 20 spaces, availability can be tight during peak periods – arrive early if you’re travelling in summer or school holidays
Birmingham Airport – Motorbike Parking
Birmingham Airport has a dedicated motorcycle area within Car Park 2, close to the terminal. Parking here is free – but only if you use the correct area.
- Pre-booking: Recommended, especially during busy periods, to confirm space and procedure
- Cost: Free in the Car Park 2 motorcycle area
- Watch out: Park your motorbike anywhere else on site and you will be charged standard car parking rates – the free rate only applies in the designated bike area of Car Park 2
Bournemouth Airport – Motorbike Parking
Bournemouth Airport offers motorbike parking in its on-airport car park at a 50% discount compared to the standard car rate.
- Pre-booking: Yes – book in advance via the airport’s parking website or contact them directly if a motorbike option isn’t shown online
- Cost: 50% of the standard car parking price for your stay duration
- Watch out: Unlike some airports, Bournemouth does not have a free walk-up motorbike area – you need to book ahead to secure the discounted rate
Bristol Airport – Motorbike Parking
Bristol Airport provides free dedicated motorbike bays opposite the main administration building. Spaces are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Pre-booking: Not available
- Cost: Free in designated bike bays
- Watch out: The bays are in a specific location – opposite the admin building. Don’t just park in any convenient spot or you may face charges
Cardiff Airport – Motorbike Parking
Cardiff Airport has free motorcycle parking near the exits of both the Short Stay car park and Long Stay 2 car park.
- Pre-booking: Not required – turn up and use the marked bays
- Cost: Free in designated motorbike areas
- Watch out: Look for signage on arrival – the bays are near car park exits rather than at the main entrances
Doncaster Sheffield Airport – Motorbike Parking
Important note: Doncaster Sheffield Airport (Robin Hood Airport) has been closed to commercial passenger flights since late 2022. The information below reflects the policy when it was operational, and is included for completeness should operations resume in future.
When operational, the airport provided free motorcycle parking in both Long Stay and Short Stay car parks. Riders were advised to use floodlit bays where possible for better security. No pre-booking was required for bikes.
Teesside International Airport – Motorbike Parking
Teesside International (formerly Durham Tees Valley Airport) does not have dedicated motorcycle bays. Motorbikes are treated exactly the same as cars – you book a standard space and pay the standard rate.
- Pre-booking: Yes – book a standard car space online or via the airport
- Cost: Full car parking rate – no discount for motorbikes
- Watch out: The airport uses ANPR cameras throughout, so the system will register your entry and exit and charge accordingly regardless of vehicle type
East Midlands Airport – Motorbike Parking
East Midlands Airport offers discounted motorcycle parking at 50% of the standard car rate in its official on-site car parks.
- Pre-booking: Yes – reserve in advance through the airport’s parking system
- Cost: 50% of the standard car parking tariff
- Watch out: Follow signs for motorcycle parking on arrival – staff can direct you to the correct area if signage isn’t immediately clear
Real situation: A week’s car parking at East Midlands costs around £70. On your motorbike, that drops to £35 – a significant saving for a solo traveller heading on a business trip with hand luggage only. Pre-book to lock in the discount and guarantee your space.
Edinburgh Airport – Motorbike Parking
Edinburgh Airport offers motorbike parking in the Terminal Surface car park – directly adjacent to the terminal building, which is convenient. However, there is no discount for bikes here.
- Pre-booking: Yes – book online or via the airport as you would for a car
- Cost: Full standard car parking rates – no motorbike discount
- Watch out: Edinburgh is one of the pricier Scottish airports for parking generally – worth comparing with the cost of public transport to the airport if cost is a priority
Exeter Airport – Motorbike Parking
Exeter Airport allows motorbikes in the hatched area near the advertising hoarding as you enter Car Park 1. It’s a smaller, more informal arrangement than at major airports, but it works well and it’s free.
- Pre-booking: Not available – but space is usually plentiful given the airport’s size
- Cost: Free
- Watch out: If you’re unsure where to park, call the Airport Car Park Customer Service team on 01392 365225 before you travel – they will confirm availability and direct you to the right spot
Glasgow Airport – Motorbike Parking
Glasgow Airport accommodates motorbikes in Car Park 2. Bikes are accepted but are charged at the same rate as cars – there is no discount.
- Pre-booking: Yes – contact the airport or book a car space online and confirm you’re bringing a motorbike
- Cost: Full car parking rate
- Watch out: No specific bike bays – you’ll be in a standard car space in Car Park 2. Make sure your booking is confirmed before you arrive
Leeds Bradford Airport – Motorbike Parking
Leeds Bradford Airport does not have separate motorbike bays. Bikes park in standard car spaces across the airport’s car parks. No discount applies.
- Pre-booking: Yes – book a standard car space in advance if you want to guarantee a spot, particularly in peak periods
- Cost: Full car parking rate – no discount for motorbikes
- Watch out: You’re essentially paying car prices to park a bike. If cost matters, compare this with driving to a nearby train station and taking the rail link instead
Liverpool Airport – Motorbike Parking
Liverpool John Lennon Airport provides free motorbike parking, but in a slightly unusual location – the Express Drop-Off zone, which has a small number of bays allocated specifically for motorcycles.
- Pre-booking: Not available – first come, first served
- Cost: Free
- Watch out: The number of dedicated motorbike spaces is limited. The Express Drop-Off zone is primarily for quick vehicle drop-offs, so always check signage carefully to confirm you’re in the correct allocated motorcycle bay and not accidentally in a paid drop-off area
Real situation: You’re flying from Liverpool for a long weekend. You arrive, head to the Express Drop-Off zone, and find the motorcycle bays – but there are only a handful of them and two are already taken. It’s free, but it’s tight. For longer trips in summer, arrive earlier than you think you need to.
Luton Airport – Motorbike Parking
London Luton Airport offers one of the most rider-friendly policies of any UK airport – free motorbike parking for up to 21 days in the designated motorcycle bays in the Mid Term Car Park.
- Pre-booking: Not available – turn up and use the bike bays in Mid Term
- Cost: Free for up to 21 days. Standard car parking rates apply from day 22 onwards
- Watch out: The 21-day free limit covers most holidays comfortably, but if you’re travelling for longer – a month-long trip, for example – factor in that the daily car rate will kick in from day 22. For most riders, though, this is one of the best-value motorbike parking options at any UK airport
Manchester Airport – Motorbike Parking
Manchester Airport is one of the best options for motorbike riders – you can park in covered multi-storey car parks at all three terminals, and you get a 50% discount on the standard car rate. The catch: you must book by phone, not online.
- Pre-booking: Yes – call Manchester Airport Parking on 0800 042 0213 (open 08:00–20:00). Online booking will not apply the motorbike discount automatically
- Cost: 50% of the standard car parking rate for your chosen terminal’s car park
- Watch out: If you book online without calling, you’ll likely pay the full car rate. Always phone to ensure the discount is applied correctly. The covered multi-storey parking is a genuine bonus – your bike stays dry and under CCTV while you’re away
Real situation: You’re flying from Manchester Terminal 2 for 10 days. Standard car parking might cost £120 for that duration. On your motorbike, booked by phone, that drops to £60 – and your bike is in a covered multi-storey with CCTV. One phone call saves you £60 and gets you better security than most free bike bays at other airports.
Newcastle Airport – Motorbike Parking
Newcastle Airport allows motorbikes to use the Long Stay car parks in standard car spaces. There are no dedicated motorbike bays and no discount.
- Pre-booking: Yes – book a standard car space online; the system treats motorbikes the same as cars
- Cost: Full car parking rate – no motorbike discount
- Watch out: You’ll be occupying a full car space and paying car prices for a motorbike. If you’re price-sensitive, check whether the Metro from nearby stations is a practical alternative for your journey
Prestwick Airport – Motorbike Parking
Glasgow Prestwick Airport is the one UK airport that does not accept motorbikes in its parking facilities at all.
- Pre-booking: Not applicable
- Cost: N/A
- Watch out: Prestwick uses an ANPR system designed around standard vehicles. Motorcycles cannot be accommodated. If you’re flying from Prestwick, you will need to arrange alternative transport to the airport – a lift, taxi, or public transport. There is no workaround
Southampton Airport – Motorbike Parking
Southampton Airport has a dedicated motorcycle area on the ground floor of the Short Stay car park, right next to the terminal – one of the most conveniently located bike areas at any regional airport.
- Pre-booking: Not required – first come, first served
- Cost: Free
- Watch out: When leaving the car park on your return, use the undercover exit barrier lane – it’s shorter and better suited to motorcycles than the standard car exit lanes. Airport staff recommend this specifically for bike riders
Southend Airport – Motorbike Parking
London Southend Airport provides free designated motorbike bays in Long Stay Car Park 3. Given the airport’s manageable size, availability is generally good.
- Pre-booking: Not available – first come, first served
- Cost: Free in Long Stay Car Park 3 designated bays
- Watch out: Head specifically to Long Stay 3 – don’t park in any other area or you may be charged. Southend Airport car parking is well-signed on arrival
Stansted Airport – Motorbike Parking
London Stansted Airport welcomes motorbikes in two specific zones and offers a 50% discount on standard car rates. Bikes can park in the Orange Zone of the Short Stay car park or the Q Zone of the Long Stay car park.
- Pre-booking: Yes – contact Stansted’s parking team or book online and confirm you’re bringing a motorbike
- Cost: 50% of the standard car parking rate for whichever zone you use
- Watch out: You must use the Orange Zone (Short Stay) or Q Zone (Long Stay) to qualify for the discount. Parking in any other zone could mean paying the full car rate. Stansted is a large airport – allow extra time to navigate to the correct zone on arrival
Frequently Asked Questions
More than you might think. Solo travellers and business flyers on short trips often travel with just a carry-on bag, making a motorbike entirely practical. Cutting through rush-hour traffic also makes it faster door-to-door than a car in many cities. It’s not ideal for a two-week family holiday with luggage – but for a long weekend or a business trip with hand luggage, riding to the airport makes complete sense.
Off-airport car parks – the kind that offer Park and Ride transfers to the terminal – almost never accept motorbikes. The reason is straightforward: these operators valet-park or reposition vehicles to maximise space, and their staff are trained to drive cars, not ride motorcycles. Moving your bike around a car park is a specialist task that most operators simply aren’t set up for. For safety and insurance reasons, off-site operators decline motorbikes as a standard policy. Your only realistic option is the airport’s own on-site parking.
Use the airport’s own on-site parking – specifically the designated motorbike areas described in the airport-by-airport guide above. Do not park in a standard car bay unless the airport explicitly tells you to (Leeds Bradford and Newcastle being examples where this is necessary). Parking in the wrong spot risks either a full car rate charge or your bike being moved. When you arrive, follow motorbike parking signs or ask a parking attendant to direct you.
Often yes – but not always. Gatwick, Heathrow, Luton, Bristol, Cardiff, Southampton, Southend, Exeter, Aberdeen and Liverpool all offer free motorbike parking in designated areas. Manchester, Stansted, East Midlands and Bournemouth charge 50% of the car rate. Edinburgh, Glasgow, Newcastle, Leeds Bradford and Teesside charge the full car rate with no discount. And Prestwick doesn’t accept motorbikes at all. The table at the top of this guide shows the cost at every airport at a glance.
Official airport car parks have CCTV, barriers and security patrols – but dedicated motorbike bays are not always as well monitored as the main car areas. Many motorbike zones are at the edges of car parks or in open areas without cover or fixed anchor points. Bring a high-quality disc lock or chain lock, and consider a cover to deter opportunistic theft and protect against the elements. Manchester is a notable exception – covered multi-storey parking with CCTV throughout. For most other airports, treat the security as you would any public motorbike bay and secure your bike accordingly.
If the dedicated motorcycle bays are full, do not park in a standard car space without checking first – you could be charged the full car rate. Speak to a parking attendant or contact the airport’s parking team before leaving your bike anywhere unofficial. At smaller airports with limited bike spaces (Aberdeen has around 20, Liverpool has even fewer), arriving earlier than planned during busy periods is the safest approach.
No. Unlike off-airport valet parking where you hand over your keys, on-airport motorbike bays are self-park. You ride in, lock up, and take your keys with you. Nobody will move or touch your bike while you’re away – which is one of the practical advantages of airport motorbike parking over car parking at some off-site operators.
Most riders leave their helmet and jacket locked to the bike or stowed under a cover. A disc-mounted helmet lock or a cable threaded through your helmet and jacket is a sensible precaution. A waterproof cover protects both your gear and the bike from weather. Do not leave anything of real value attached to the bike – keep valuables in your carry-on or checked luggage.
Key Takeaways for Motorbike Riders Flying from UK Airports
- Most major UK airports do accept motorbikes – Prestwick is the only exception
- Free parking is common – Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, Bristol, Cardiff, Southampton, Southend, Exeter, Aberdeen and Liverpool all offer free bike bays
- 50% discounts are available at Manchester, Stansted, East Midlands and Bournemouth – worth booking ahead to make sure the discount is applied
- Full car rates apply at Edinburgh, Glasgow, Newcastle, Leeds Bradford and Teesside – factor this into your decision on whether to ride or use public transport
- Park in the right place – using a standard car space instead of the designated bike area at most airports will result in a full car charge, or your bike being moved

- Call ahead to confirm – policies change. A two-minute phone call before you travel can save a lot of hassle on the day
- Manchester is the standout option for covered, secure, discounted bike parking – worth the phone call to book
- Luton is outstanding for long trips – up to 21 days free is hard to beat for a holiday or extended business trip
