Gatwick Airport lounges… or how to unwind before a flight!

gatwick airport lounges

Bored of hanging around at the airport? Don’t kill time; get lounging!

Departure lounges. Just no.

So many busy people, all rushing about being busy; the crowded restaurants, the plastic seating designed to make you feel as uncomfortable as possible, the overpriced snacks; if only there was another way…

Step up the humble airport lounge!

These days you don’t have to be a jet setting business boss or a flashy first class flyer to enjoy the benefits of a calm and quiet space to relax in before you set off on your holidays; ‘common use’ lounges are available to anyone and really do offer some respite from the crowded chaos of the departure lounge.

Gatwick has three different lounges on offer; two at the North Terminal and one at the South Terminal. We thought we’d give you the low down on these havens of tranquillity so that you can start your holiday with a little luxury!

Plush interiors, acres of cool marble stretching ahead of you; the No 1 Traveller at Gatwick North really is something a little bit special. Decked out in elegant tones and oozing style; the lounge is an airy and bright space full of seats to take the weight off your feet, sofas waiting to be sunk into and computers to hop on board.

As soon as you step inside you are greeted by panoramic views of the runway; but if plane spotting isn’t your thing, there’s loads of entertainment on offer, enough to make the hours before your flight fly by.

The lounge has a cosy mini cinema, TV screens, a games room featuring a PlayStation, free Wi-Fi, newspapers and magazines, showers; and for those of us in need of a proper pampering session; a travel spa.

If you’re feeling a little peckish you can graze all day at the pantry table; stacked high with treats like pastries and cereals in the morning, and salads, sandwiches and soups the rest of the day. You can also order a hot dish from the bistro menu, free of charge, or pay a little extra and upgrade for a full dining experience when you get there. Most alcoholic drinks are complimentary, the exception being champagne, sparkling wines and cocktails which start at £6.00 for a glass of Prosecco.

Verdict: A tranquil and relaxing place to while away the time before a flight; No 1 Traveller fulfils all expectations and with extras like the travel spa and cinema on hand; the pre-holiday wait flies by in no time!

Open: From 4:00am to 10:00pm daily. You can enter the lounge up to three hours before your flight.

Location: No 1 Traveller is located on the lower level of the departure lounge of the North Terminal; after passing through security follow the signs for ‘Airport Lounges’, head past Boots and World Duty Free toward gates 45 to 55 & 101 to 113.

If your tastes are a little more down to earth, you might want to check out the competition in the form of the brand new My Lounge. Owned by the same company; this is like the cool younger sister of No 1 Traveller! Designed to be reminiscent of a super-slick New York loft apartment, the lounge is all light airy spaces and sharp lines.

Aimed at younger travellers, this is lounging without the formality. There are glistening apple macs waiting to be used, TVs, a games room complete with PlayStation, newspapers, magazines and complimentary Wi-Fi to help you pass the time.

Like other lounges, food at My Lounge is free and plentiful. Choose from treats piled high on the kitchen counter; we recommend the warm doughnuts with dipping sauces or the flavoured popcorn for sweet teeth, or the selection of savoury snacks and healthy crunchy veg sticks if sugar’s not your thing.

Drinks are on the house and there’s a huge range to choose from; beer, wine, cider, spirits, soft drinks, frothy coffees…

If you’re feeling flush you can order tapas style share boards at £10.00 a pop, or make your own DIY Bellini’s for an extra charge of £20.00.

Verdict: We think My Lounge is worth every penny; it’s a bargain too as it’s the cheapest lounge on offer. If you’re looking for something a little different from your pre-flight experience this relaxed and informal space might be just what you need!

Open: From 4:00am to 8:00pm daily. You can enter the lounge up to three hours before your flight.
