The table gives the rules and regulations of driving in France, Italy, Spain, Germany and the United States and highlights rules that UK holidaymakers may not be aware of. Information on the site includes legal driving ages, breakdown law, seatbelt law as well as other useful tips for motorists. Rules on break down vary by country. In France, it is illegal not to carry a reflective jacket in the car at all times in case of a break down as well as a warning triangle. Any driver not complying with this rule can face a fine of up to €135. In Spain, drivers need two warning triangles in case of break down. Whilst in Germany, you need to know your distances, warning triangles in the country have to be placed 100 metres from the car or 200 metres if there is a disabled passenger in the vehicle. Drivers under the age of 25 who are travelling to the USA may struggle to hire a car as may older drivers over the age of 71 whereas in Europe drivers looking to hire a car only need to be 18 and hold a full driving licence. Younger drivers also need to be aware that blood alcohol levels vary in different countries many depending on how long drivers have held their licence. For example in Germany, drivers who have held their licence for less that two years are not permitted to have any alcohol in their blood. In Spain, the measurement is 0.03% as opposed to 0.05% for more experienced drivers. Other rules and regulations that differ from the UK are highlighted on the table. For example in the USA, drivers can turn right at a red light as long as the road is clear and on the Highway in the US there are no designated overtaking lanes. Horns in Italy and France are banned in built up areas except in cases of immediate danger whilst in Germany many cities feature low emission zones for which a special pass is needed. Also in Germany, don’t think of making derogatory signs or using abusive language at other drivers as this can lead to heavy fines.
