Costs of travelling with children

The annual summer holiday brings with it the financial and emotional stress of travelling with the family. Whether travelling abroad with children or flying domestically, there's much to consider, from excess charges and supplements to ease and convenience, pushchairs and car seats to kids meals and onboard entertainment.

We've created a comprehensive list below outlining the costs of travelling with infants and young children. Importantly, the list shows how to avoid unnecessary costs and aggravation that might be associated with air travel with the kids.

British Airways

One fully collapsible pushchair is allowed free of charge.

It is free to transport a car seat for free when travelling with an infant (under two).

Child meals are available at no extra cost and must be ordered at least 24 hours in advance. There is also onboard bottle and baby food warming facilities

Infants are entitled to one bag weighting up to 23kg.

Infants under the age of two are charged 10% of an adult fare, as long as they sit on the parents lap and will not have their own seat. Child tickets (under 12) will cost between 60% -80% of the adult fare on long haul flights. 

Skyflyers activity packs are available for children up to the age of 12 on all flights 170 minutes. There is also dedicated Disney and Cartoon Network entertainment on long haul flights. 

There is no extra costs at check-in. British Airways has introduced the new online ‘Family Check-in’ at no extra charge.

Ryanair

One fully collapsible pushchair is allowed free of charge.

Car seats are not allowed in the cabin of the aircraft. It can be checked-in however there will be an additional charge of £8.00.

There are a range of snacks available to buy on the aircraft.

No luggage allowance for Infants. 

Infants are not entitled to their own seat and an extra cost of £10 for them is applicable. Children over two must pay the full price.

EasyJet

One fully collapsible pushchair is allowed free of charge

Travel cots can be taken right up to the aircraft steps and/or door, where they will be taken by cabin crew and stored in the hold. Can be checked in free of charge.

There is a range of snacks available to buy on the aircraft.

This is no baggage allowance for infants under the age of two.

Infants (under two) pay £20 for a ticket, children have to pay the full fare.

There is no cost to check in on-line or at the airport, however you will have to pay extra if you have excess baggage. 

BMI

One fully collapsible pushchair is allowed free of charge.

Car seats can be used for infants between six months and three years, free of charge.

Child’s meals are available at no extra cost, but it must be ordered at least 24 hours in advance.

Infants are entitled to one piece of luggage up to 10kg when travelling to Europe, Africa & Asia. The luggage allowance is up to 23kg when travelling to the US

Infants under the age of two are charged at 10%of the adult fare and must sit on an adults lap. Children under 12 are charged between 67%-80% of an adult fare.

Children’s entertainment packages are available, free of charge.

There is no cost to check in online or at the airport. Although there are a few routes that do not offer online check-in.

XL Airways

There is no charge for an infant to fly, however they are not entitled to a seat.

Thomsonfly

One fully collapsible pushchair is allowed free of charge.

It is free to transport a car seat; it will have to go into the hold.

Children’s meals are available upon request. The airline must be notified at least 24 hours.

There is no luggage allowance for infants under the age of two.

Children over two years old have to pay full fare and will get their own seat.

Yes, there is entertainment available onboard.

There is no extra cost to check in; however there is no online check in available. However you can purchase a family executive check in (2 adults and 2 children) for £50.

Virgin Atlantic

One fully collapsible pushchair is allowed free of charge.

It is free to transport a car seat for free when travelling with an infant (under two).

Child’s meals are available at no extra cost, but must be ordered at least 72 hours before you travel.

Infants not entitled to a seat are entitled to check in one piece of luggage weighing up to 10 kg as well as one piece of hand luggage up to 6kg

All infants and children have to pay a percentage of the fare; this depends on which destination they are travelling too.

All children leaving the UK will receive the Virgin K-iD pack, full of things to do on the journey. 

There is no extra cost to check in at either the airport or online.
