APH brings best value airport parking convenience to north England

You can now pre-book your airport parking through APH at Robin Hood Doncaster Sheffield Airport and at Durham Tees Valley Airport. The new parking deal will enable holiday makers and business travellers alike to enjoy all the benefits of airport parking services – at both airport sites.
Sharon Kenny, APH’s marketing head, said: “The addition of these two airports to our portfolio means we can now offer great savings for independent travellers at every major holiday airport across the UK. We pride ourselves on providing the right product for each and every customer, and this deal goes a long way to ensure we are doing just that.”
The two airports are owned by Peel Airports Group. The deal was forged with Peel to sell their parking space at Doncaster and Durham after the success of APH’s existing agreement with them spanning seven years of airport parking at Liverpool Airport’s Long Stay car park.
The car parks include the Robin Hood Long Stay Car Park at Doncaster and the Durham Tees Valley Park & Stay Car Park.
Doncaster’s Robin Hood Airport is the UK’s newest airport. It has now handled 2.85 million passengers since opening in April 2005,...

Airport expansion gets go-ahead

Stansted Airport in Essex, UK has been given the green light to expand.
Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon made the announcement in a written statement to Parliament. Permission to expand the site was orginally refused in 2006, on grounds of noise and environmental concerns, but a public enquiry was held, in which airport owners BAA said it would put measures in place to control, manage and minimise predicted impacts on the local environment.
BAA wants to increase passenger numbers from 25 million to 35 million a year, and up the number of flights leaving the airport from 241,000 to 264,000 a year. Unions say the move will bring more jobs, but objectors still feel the expansion will decrease their quality of life.
Stansted boss, Stewart Wingate, said the decision was "great news" for passengers. Members of the Stop Stansted Expansion (SSE) campaign group have held a long-running campaign against the plans. BAA also wants to build a second runway at Stansted as part of long-term plans for the airport, but the anti-expansion campaign group Plane Stupid has suggested that 'escalating direct action is...

T5 hotel promises luxury

If your idea of an airport hotel includes fine dining and five star luxuries then the forthcoming opening of the Heathrow T5 Sofitel could answer your dreams.
The £180 million Sofitel London Heathrow is set to become one of Europe’s largest airport hotels when it opens in June 2008.
It will connect directly to T5 by a link bridge and Albert Roux is in charge of its menus at Brasserie Roux.
The hotel has been designed with five towering steel and glass atriums and its interior design includes work by the company that decked out the Burj Al Arab, Dubai, and Four Seasons Hotel, Hong Kong - KCA International Designers.
Each of the 608 bedrooms is individually styled and has triple glazed windows - to help make sure of a good night’s sleep. If you fancy a bit of grandeur then the Imperial Suite offers 165 square metres of space.
There will be a spa area with 24-hour gym, treatment rooms, sauna and steam room, and there’s a 117-seat tiered theatre complete with cinema projection.

Go green at Heathrow with Park Inn

After you've parked at Heathrow, you might like to salve your environmental concerns by opting to stay at the Park Inn Heathrow. That's because this 881 room property is the first hotel at the UK's busiest airport to receive a silver award for environmental practice from the Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS), which operates a sustainable tourism certification scheme across Britain.
Park Inn's responsible business programme aims to reduce negative environmental impacts, as well as outlining responsibility for employee and guest health and safety, and wider social and ethical issues.
The GTBS grades businesses on energy and water efficiency, waste management, biodiversity and other green factors.

SkyTeam opens co-branded lounge at Heathrow

If you're travelling from Heathrow with one of the 'SkyTeam' Alliance of airlines, you'll soon be able to take advantage of what sounds like a plush new SkyTeam alliance lounge.
As SkyTeam carriers relocate to Terminal 4 at Heathrow, they are also planning an impressive new lounge.
The airlines in the Alliance are Aeroflot, Air France, Alitalia, Continental Airlines, Czech Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Kenya Airways, KLM, Korean Air and Northwest Airlines.
Spokesman Giorgio Callegari said: "SkyTeam understands that airport lounges are more than just waiting rooms for frequent travellers. They serve as a home-away-from-home for passengers awaiting departure - a place to work, relax, dine or catch up on reading. In planning the new lounge space, SkyTeam is focusing on offering customers a superior experience that meets their individual needs."
Opening in autumn 2008, the multi-level co-branded lounge will occupy a space of 1,500 square meters and have around 325 seats. The space will be completed and the second floor open in spring 2009, in conjunction with the relocation of the remaining alliance carriers.
And if you're travelling with a SkyTeam airline before this new lounge...

Star (Alliance) studded lounge now at Heathrow

Star Alliance customers flying from London Heathrow Terminal 1 can now make use of the alliance’s largest lounge. The facility is for first and business class passengers, invited guests and Star Alliance Gold Card holders travelling on any member carrier from Terminal 1.

“The opening of a Star Alliance lounge in a major hub airport such as Heathrow is a major benefit to our member carriers and their customers,” said Lee Hock Lye, Vice-President, Products & Services, Star Alliance. “Rather than own separate lounges and incur duplicate construction and operating costs, Star Alliance lounges save the airlines money, and give customers a high-quality experience in a comfortable environment that is much larger and with more amenities than the carriers could provide on their own.”

The lounge provides 1,650 square metres of space and is located in the international departures area near the flight connection desks in Pier 3. It features more than 300 seats in separate first class and business class sections, food service areas, two business centres with computers, printers, faxes and Wi-Fi Internet access, shower facilities and a special area for children.

More space to lounge at London City Airport

We’d all rather be on the plane than waiting in departures - but London City Airport is soothing some of the pain by promising an enhanced pre-flight experience.
From May onwards the airport's departure lounge will offer:
Free Wi-Fi access for all passengers
250 new seats High speed internet access points Live sports screens More retail outlets including WH Smith and NuanceA new concept bar will be open from the end of May.
The new developments are part of ongoing work by the airport to improve the service offered to passengers who pass through - many of whom are frequent business flyers.
Chief Executive Richard Gooding said: “Frequent fliers demand a premier service and our proven record of transferring passengers to their destinations with ease and speed has ensured their continued loyalty."
“London City Airport has grown in leaps and bounds since its opening in 1987 and the future is even more encouraging as more and more passengers travel from our East London hub.”

Terminal5 problems - latest

After the ease and simplicity of parking with APH at Heathrow, many travelers are currently struggling to get through the new Terminal 5, opened by the Queen recently.
British Airways claims the delays are due to baggage handling problems, but this did nothing to mollify the mounting angst of hundreds of waiting passengers. Passengers departing and arriving were affected, with baggage problems causing delays, cancellations and misery.
One fifth of flights to Europe from the troubled terminal were scrapped on Saturday March 29 - 67 out of the 330 scheduled. A further 37 flights were cancelled on Sunday.
Check-in was suspended for an hour on Saturday morning as airport workers attempted to deal with the backlog.
The airline retracted its £100 limit for delayed passengers' accommodation, saying it would look at all reasonable claims for costs.
BBC News reported that airport operator BAA confirmed that a "small percentage" of lifts at the terminal were not working on Saturday, but added they were either not in passenger areas or would not interfere with passenger flow.
BA said it apologised to its customers for disruption and its operational staff were working...

Sunny outlook for Norwich

The future looks a bit brighter if you fancy flying to the sun from Norwich. That’s because sun seekers may soon have the option of new routes from Norwich Airport to Spanish holiday hot spots.
The airport is set to announce that it has made a deal with an as yet unnamed low cost airline to fly to Malaga, Alicante and other Spanish destinations. Flybe announced last July that it was scrapping its service to the two resorts - which prompted the airport to seek another operator in a bid to meet demand from holidaymakers.
Now a deal is said to be close to completion and will be made public imminently.
Airport managing director Richard Jenner said: “Since Flybe pulled off that route we have been talking to about ten airlines - most want to start from next summer but there is one interested in starting this year.
“I think we have expanded significantly in recent years, mainly on the back of Flybe, and obviously what we are looking to do now is have a range of carriers that are appropriate to the particular types of routes, instead of one doing them all.”

Pampering for passengers

Weary travellers looking for ways to relax are likely to shun the bar - for a trip to a nail bar or beauty zone. It seems the growing high street demand for soothing spa treatments and beauty salons is now hitting airport shopping areas.
Heathrow, for instance, has a number of beauty counters, hair salons and spa centres. They include the newly-opened Cocoon Beauty Sanctuary in Terminal 1. In the same terminal is Urban Retreat, which offers 15-minute “prepare to fly” facials and hair dos for just £15.
In Terminal 4 is the HairPOD, a freestanding beauty capsule where stylists offer a pre-flight haircut before you board.
And the launch of Terminal 5 will see new spa suites managed by Elemis in executive lounges for British Airways passengers.
An Elemis spokesman said: “Customers will be able to enjoy a 15-minute well being treatment on a state-of-the-art intelligent massage chair. The departure offering will aid sleep and relaxation, calming customers, so their on-board experience is enhanced.”
Other airports including Gatwick, Glasgow and Leeds Bradford all have beauty zones and nail bars.

Goa, on the west coast of India, is the first destination in the Indian Ocean area for East Midlands Airport.
Airport director of marketing and communications, Caroline Plant, said: "Goa is a genuine jewel in the Indian Ocean and an incredible place in which to enjoy a holiday. The new service is incredibly popular.”

Scottish airports battle for passengers

More choice for travellers is a beneficial spin-off of the fight for business between Scotland’s two largest airports. Edinburgh currently takes the crown as Scotland’s number one airport in terms of numbers flying out - but Glasgow is hoping to overhaul its counterpart later this year.
Glasgow has seen a recent drop in passenger numbers with February witnessing a 16.3% fall in charter traffic. But long-haul flights to America, Canada and the United Arab Emirates recorded a 7% increase.
Glasgow Airport spokesman Donald Morrison said: "We are not remotely despondent. We're working hard to get new routes and continue to invest in a new terminal extension, which will open in October and make Glasgow Airport much more attractive to passengers."
Morrison admits that Edinburgh is likely to remain Scotland's favourite airport for the next few months, before Glasgow aims to win back the number one spot at the start of the busy summer season.
He said: "With more than 40 new services, mainly international, set for take off this year, the number of direct flights from Scotland has never been greater. That is good news for Scotland's business community, as well as for...

Visitors to Newcastle airport can now relax in an American style diner before they travel.
The airport is the first location outside London to see the opening of an Eagle Bar Diner – a move which marks the start of a progressive upgrade of the airport’s facilities. The diner will be offering an international menu of food and drinks to travellers - whatever time of day they choose to dine.
It has sleek American design influences and space for more than 200 travellers.
Owner Nicholas O’Dwyer opened the first Eagle Bar Diner in London’s Rathbone Place in 2002.
He said: “We are very excited to bring the Eagle Bar Diner brand to the north east. It’s the right product for the international airport environment. The menu caters for people from different time zones, whether it’s cocktails at 6am or breakfast at 6pm”

Luton adds security

If you’re wondering what you can and cannot take through airport security checks, one airport is hiring extra staff to ease the stress.
Increased flights and more travellers have prompted Luton airport to increase security support personnel.
With new flights taking off from Luton through the year it has employed an extra 22 security workers to help - as of Easter, when 120,000 travellers passed through the airport.
They will be on hand to advise people what they can and cannot take through security checks. Passengers will be told of restrictions on liquids in hand baggage and that only one piece of hand baggage per passenger is permitted.
General manager of airport security Yvonne Jakins said: “It’s vital that passengers are properly prepared to travel and are aware of the security requirements in order to pass through the checkpoints as quickly as possible.
“Our security support staff will help to speed up this process and keep waiting times as short as possible.”
A number of new services will be launched from Luton in 2008. They include flights to Wroclaw by Wizz Air and Jersey and Pisa by easyJet.

The airport is spending £40 million on a project that will add nearly 6,000 square metres of floor space to the international arrivals area.
Stansted’s investment is designed to help the airport cope with the increased numbers that will flow from new flights to and from the airport.
Managing director Stewart Wingate said: “This will transform the terminal building and improve the customer service we provide to the tens of thousands of passengers who pass through Stansted every day. We’ve invested in the latest technology to improve the environmental performance of the terminal and limit the impact of our operations.”

That’s because the airport has installed 12 new self service check-in kiosks to help quicken the process. The kiosks will be open from early May and will enable passengers to check themselves onto flights with airlines including VLM, KLM and Swiss.

Melanie Burnley is general manager of customer services and security at the airport. She has overseen the installation of the system and said: “The majority of passengers at London City Airport are frequent fliers who will appreciate the time saving that this technology offers. By speeding-up the overall time spent at the airport, business travellers are able to commute with further ease to their final destination.

“We are keen to continue to offer the fastest and most efficient service that passengers using London City Airport have come to expect.”

All aboard for Ipswich flyers

If you live in or around Ipswich and need to fly from Stansted then you may want to hop aboard a new bus service from the Suffolk town to the airport.
The route opens on May 3 and offers a service every two hours throughout the day and night. Coaches will have WiFi and reclining leather seats.
Stansted’s public transport development manager Steve Mills said: “Ipswich is a key town in the east of England. We already have more than 40 per cent of our passengers using public transport to get to and from Stansted and this new route will help us continue to build on our UK leading position.
“The service will be the only direct public transport link between Stansted Airport and Ipswich and with a journey time of 1 hour and 15 minutes we are confident that people in the town will find it extremely convenient and an excellent alternative to their car.”

Welcome to Heathrow Nature Reserve

Fancy taking in some nature next time you’re at Heathrow? Well, it’s a lot closer than you might think.
The airport site is home to such a diverse range of animals, flora and fauna that open days are being staged for visitors to marvel at the nature on show. Bats, deer, birds and grass snakes abound in land around the airport - as well as plant life, spiders and beetles.
A series of “discover Heathrow” educational walks and talks has now been scheduled. The walks will take place across two separate sites: Oaks Road and Two Bridges Farm. The first walks have already been held in April but more will take place in June.
If you’re interested in seeing more then email heathrowenvironment@baa.com for more information. And if you want to volunteer to help conduct nature surveys or manage the area, you can do that too. Walks last about an hour.

Luton Airport Buses Go Green

If you take an airfield bus to or from your flight at Luton Airport you’ll now be sitting on a more environmentally friendly vehicle.
The airport has bought four new fuel efficient models to replace the gas guzzlers it was previously using - and plans to renew its whole fleet.
Luton’s new COBUS 3000 vehicles feature lightweight aluminium bodies to cut down on fuel bills - and they also prolong vehicle life because aluminium doesn’t rust.
Savings of five litres of diesel per hour - even at the low speeds travelled on airport tarmac - are predicted.
The vehicles also boast wide doors on both sides and easier access for wheelchair users, the elderly and people with pushchairs.
You may also notice the anti-slip flooring and temperature management as you travel from plane to terminal building on the buses.

Belfast flights mean business

Now you’ve more choice of continental destinations to select from if you plan to fly from Belfast Airport.
That’s because new flights to Munich, Milan and Lanzarote will be on offer from next winter (2008 to 2009).
It brings the total number of overseas destinations that you can fly to from the Northern Ireland airport to 34.
More than six million people are set to fly from Belfast this year. And the new flights will help Northern Ireland’s business flyers, the airport believes.
Airport managing director John Doran said the new flights are a boost for the whole Northern Ireland economy.
He said: "At a time when there has arguably never been a greater need for companies here to exploit their export potential we are giving them access to Europe that has never been available before.”

Stansted Remembers Shuttle

One shuttle flight will never be forgotten at Stansted airport.
That's the day the NASA Space Shuttle touched down at the UK airport back in 1983.
Now Stansted is holding a special exhibition to mark the 25th anniversary of the event.
More than half-a-million people gathered on June 5, 1983, to watch the Space Shuttle as it landed piggy back on the back of a specially modified Boeing 747.
The visit was part of a European tour that included stops in Germany, Italy and France.
To commemorate the landing a one-day exhibition will be held at Stansted this Thursday, June 5.
There will be film footage of the Shuttle landing, together with rare photos and memorabilia.
Retired staff who were at the airport 25 years ago will be returning.
Former head of public affairs and exhibition organiser Derek Winter said: "The Shuttle's visit was probably the most famous event in the history of the airport and I decided I couldn't just let the anniversary go by without doing something to mark the occasion.
"I'm really looking forward to meeting up with some of my old colleagues who worked with me back in 1983, and also talking to newer staff who perhaps were a bit young...

Airport Is Good For Your Health

Living near an airport could be good for you.
That’s the surprise result of a survey undertaken on behalf of Birmingham Airport.
The survey looked at implications of a planned new £120 million runway extension.
It claims that 20,000 new jobs would be created across the West Midlands as a result of the development with “subsequent benefits to health”.
But critics say the airport is trying to put a gloss on negative results of a previous survey.
A £50,000 study by experts at Liverpool University had warned of health implications for children at 31 local schools, elderly people and anyone with circulatory or respiratory conditions.
But because the university wouldn’t produce an easy-to-read summary of its complicated 171 page findings the airport decided to commission its own new probe.
Airport acting managing director Joe Kelly said he wanted a “second opinion” to make sure the university analysis was properly understood.
He said: “We believe it has helped our understanding and we will use both reports to produce a health management plan.
“The key message is that both reports conclude the runway extension...

Inside the airport terminal atrium there is a new 3D logo fitted to the glass.
The changes are designed to reflect a new direction after the airport’s recent change of ownership.
Communications manager Stephen Ayres has been responsible for the installation of the signs and the new website at www.exeter-airport.co.uk.
He said: “We are in a new era for the airport and have already received some very positive feedback.
“Our passengers seem to like the new bright sign colours as they arrive at the airport and the website has been very well received.”
The new logo features coloured silhouettes of travellers.

Airport Increases Fees

How do you feel about paying just to be allowed to leave an airport and fly out?
Norwich airport has increased a fee it charges to every person who departs from the airport.
And that has prompted Flybe - one of the biggest airlines using the Norfolk airport - to warn that passengers may desert it and instead choose to fly from Stansted.
Every person who flies out of Norwich is charged an “airport development fee” which from September will be £5 for adults - up from the present price of £3.
The £1 rate for children remains unchanged.
The fee was introduced in April 2007 to help make improvements to the runway, check-in areas, shops, parking and customer services as part of a five-year £18 million investment plan.
Norwich Airport was sold in 2003 to investment group Omniport for £11m by Norwich City Council and Norfolk County Council.
But Flybe has warned the airport that customers will not appreciate the increase.
A spokesman said: “"Flybe is concerned that this action will give passengers a further reason to choose to fly from Stansted rather than Norwich.
"We call upon Omniport to urgently review and...

Scots Flying Away

More and more Scots are flying to overseas destinations.
The number of people flying abroad from BAA airports in Scotland increased by 6.7 per cent to 8.7 million in the year up to May 2008.
And soon there will be another 35 routes for them to choose from at Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh airports.
But traffic figures from the Scottish airports are mixed in other areas. At Aberdeen domestic flyers fell by 3.9 per cent - reflecting a UK-wide downward trend.
But numbers leaving Aberdeen for foreign destinations rose by two per cent.
Edinburgh was Scotland’s busiest airport in May with 800,000 passengers.
BAA Scotland spokesman Donald Morrison said: “The bigger picture shows the market in Scotland remains resilient in the face of global pressures with international travel continuing to soar.”

Delay in London City Airport Expansion Plan-Mayor

London’s Mayor Boris Johnson has jumped into the controversial issue of London’s increasing air traffic.
The city chief asked council officials not to take a decision on whether to increase flights at London City Airport , until the National Air Traffic Services body is given time to review the matter properly. And planners have agreed to defer any decision.
London City Airport hopes to increase flights by 50 per cent to 120,000 a year. Local residents immediately protested on the grounds of increased noise pollution.
The airport won tentative approval for the expansion from Newham Council planning officials on July 23. A final decision was due by the end of July, but Mayor Boris stepped in at the 11th hour in a letter to Newham Council which stated that, while he supported the airport's expansion, he wanted the study to review whether the plan would “blight” areas near the airport and undermine plans to build the Thames Gateway Bridge. The airport said it would co-operate with the review.

In a bid to further increase security at UK airports, fingerprint scanning may be introduced from next year for all passengers flying from British airports.
The digit-swiping plan is set to affect all domestic and international travellers. Media reports abound, with the Home Office's Border and Immigration Agency stating concern that 'common departure lounges' could allow an incoming international passenger to switch tickets with an accomplice on a domestic flight.
A spokesman said the BIA and the government are determined to strengthen borders using new technology, and highlightred that fingerprinting was already in place for those applying for visas to enter Britain. Those flying from UK airports with common departure lounges (ie lounges or shared areas for both domestic and international travellers such as Gatwick Airport) are already photographed as they pass through airport security, but fingerprint scanning will add a higher level of identity verification and security.

Airports-a great place to lose a laptop

Around 900 laptops are lost every week at London’s Heathrow airport. In a report commissioned by laptop maker Dell conducted by the Ponemon Institute, figures revealed that Heathrow tops the table in terms of misplaced, lost and stolen laptops – followed by Amsterdam and Paris Charles de Gaulle airports.
Apparently, in the eight largest airports in the EMEA region more than 3,300 laptops are either lost or go missing EVERY week. Of those laptops which end up in lost and found departments 57 per cent are never reclaimed.
The research also revealed that 42 per cent of business travellers don't have back up for data on their laptops, while 55 per cent said they haven't taken steps to protect it.
The report was commissioned to coincide with a number of new data protection services launched by Dell, but here at aph.com we would recommend a few simple steps to ensure if you do lose your laptop at an airport, you stand a good chance of getting it back – intact:
- Back up important data – now. Online storage is a good idea if you are a frequent traveller, as then you have a virtual back up available 24/7 without the need of carrying any heavy or easily lost external storage...

Heathrow Terminal5s first hotel opens

After much-maligned beginnings, it looks like Terminal 5 is battling the storm, especially with news today of the first hotel opening at London Heathrow Airport's new area. And it seems if you're looking to start or finish a trip in style, this is the place to be.
With a direct bridge link to Terminal 5, the five star rated Heathrow Sofitel hotel, owned by Arora International Hotels, has 605 guest rooms and suites, making it one of the largest of Europe’s airport hotels. Architect is Stephen Williams, who designed London Chelsea Harbour’s Conrad Hotel. The interiors are designed by Khuan Chew of KCA International, who worked on Dubai's seven-star fantasy hotel, the Burj Al Arab. Chef consultant to the hotel is French legend Albert Roux, while Executive chef Julian Jenkins will be in charge of the kitchen.
The Sofitel also houses a tea salon, two bars, a spa, and 45 meeting rooms.
Meanwhile, British Airways has launched a new integrated campaign to promote the airlines’ base at Heathrow’s Terminal 5, six months after its problematic opening.
Big plans for Exeter

Exeter International Airport, the fastest growing airport in England's south west, has unveiled an ambitious expansion plan.
Airport bosses are touring the county of Devon to show local people their vision for the airport, which serves most European holiday destinations as well as Canada. The Department for Transport's White Paper, "The Future of Air Transport" sets out a strategic framework for the development of airport capacity in the UK. It states that Exeter, “has a distinctive role in serving the local catchment area and there is significant scope for development without major environmental impacts.”
Exeter Airport's Masterplan details runway and terminal capacity constraints which include aircraft size, scheduling, environmental and safety issues. The exhibition shows the airport's development plans until 2030 - including trebling passenger numbers to 3.4 million a year, developing terminal facilities and extra parking. The airport hopes to become carbon neutral by 2015.

Heathrow Britains biggest Wi-Fi hotspot

If you are using Heathrow's new Terminal 5 over the coming months, you'll probably be interested to hear that it is now the UK's biggest Wi-Fi hotspot, meaning that wherever you are in the terminal, you can use your laptop and connect to the internet at pretty high speeds.
The wireless connectivity covers a space the size of 50 football pitches, and is provided by UK mobile phone operator, T-Mobile. If you are a T-Mobile customer, you get a free high speed connection, that's five times faster than the 8Mbps available to non-T-Mobile customers.
Those not on the T-Mobile network are asked to pay £5 an hour or £10 for the whole day – worth it if you forgot to tell your neighbour to water the plants or feed the cat.

Privacy groups have already slammed the idea, suggesting that the machines, which use eletromagnetic wave technology to map travellers' bodies and create a 3D map, are intrusive and amount to a 'virtual strip search'.
This new technology is reportedly being considered for introduction for passengers travelling in the European Union.

You may have already seen the sacanners in action in the US, or during a recent trial period at London Heathrow's terminal four.
The new machines are said to be far more effective than the traditionla 'pat down' security check performed by airport staff.
If the machines are introduced, we will see them at UK airports by April 2010.

Slowing air passenger numbers across UK

Passenger numbers at BAA's seven UK-based airports were down 6% year on year in October.
And while that's good news for frequent flyers – meaning you can get through the airports a little quicker – it's bad news for the industry.
The airport firm handled some 12.4 million passengers in October 2008. This year, BAA´s UK airport traffic has declined by 1.9%, for the ten months to October, with a total number of passengers of 125.8 million.
European charter flights recorded the highest percentage drop (-15.7%) while North Atlantic, domestic, European scheduled and other long haul were down 7.1%, 6.3%, 5.1% and 4.3% respectively.
On an individual airport level, Heathrow's passenger numbers were down 3.7%, although its North Atlantic traffic continued to do well (up 7.4%). Gatwick’s positive results on the Irish routes (up 27.3%) and European scheduled (up 3.5%) offset the 41.6% drop in North Atlantic traffic (mostly put down to the introduction of the ‘Open Skies’ agreement), the airport overall declined 10.3%. Stansted was down by 6.3%; Southampton by 7.4%.

Inter Terminal Transport System Gatwick

Gatwick to close Inter Terminal Transport System
Gatwick airport will lose the highly popular monorail-based Inter Terminal Transit System at the end of this month.
The popular system will be shut down on 28th September this year. A new system designed and implemented by Bombardier (at an estimated total cost of some £27 million, $42 million, 32 Euros) will not be ready until next summer, with the new system expected to be ready for travellers in May and July 2010.
In the meantime there will be a replacement bus service, with buses scheduled to run every three minutes during the day time and every six minutes at night time between the Gatwick terminal buildings. It is estimated that travellers should allow for at least 20 minutes for the journey time.
However, those wise enough to book airport parking at APH Gatwick will be able to enjoy the APH customer transfer system between the APH car park and both terminals as normal as the APH transfer service will be unaffected during the shut down of the Inter Terminal Transport System!
Bombardier are, as is only to be expected, pleased to have the contract for this massive task. Colin...

East Midlands Airport services

East Midlands Airport services saved
The decision by EasyJet to pull out of services from the East Midlands Airport caused something of a flutter at the time. Rather coyly, EasyJet announced the closure of the service as: “network redeployments” and made only a glancing mention that there would be jobs lost to their employees based at East Midlands Airport and at Luton: “...easyJet has therefore opened a formal 90 day consultation with its crew at Luton and East Midlands” said their official statement.
However, BMIBaby has stepped in and decided to take over the flight spaces left vacant by EasyJet's departure from East Midlands Airport.
They have heralded the decision by announcing a “massive expansion plan from East Midlands Airport”.
There will be three additional aircraft to be based at East Midlands Airport. And there will be eight new European routes from East Midlands Airport to Alghero (Sardinia), Barcelona, Bastia (Corsica), Cork, Dubrovnik (Croatia), Malta, Newquay and Venice.
They also point out that, with the departure from East Midlands Airport of EasyJet, BMIBaby will be able to offer...

Terminal 2, Heathrow will cost a billion Pounds and from the look of artist's impressions, it will be a fantastic building with a bold and futuristic appearance. And it is designed to meet the latest rules and regulations for energy efficiency and carbon emissions. Terminal 2 will house Star Alliance airlines and it is expected that some 20 million passengers will use this spacious and modern airport facility each and every year.

Gatwick sold

“Gatwick sold,” says BAA
The British Airport Authority (BAA) has announced that it has come to an agreement to sell its 100% interest in Gatwick Airport Limited to an body controlled by Global Infrastructure Partners. The price agreed on is £1.51 billion. £55 million is conditional on future traffic performance and the future capital structure of the buyer.
BAA has revealed that the proceeds of the sale will largely be used to repay part of BAA's existing debt. BAA originally announced its plans to sell Gatwick in September of last year, before the end of the Competition Commission's UK airports market investigation.
Colin Matthews, BAA's Chief Executive, said: "Gatwick and its people have long been a central part of BAA and we are proud of the airport's development as one of the world's leading international airports".
"BAA is changing and today's announcement marks a new beginning for both Gatwick and BAA. We wish Gatwick well for the future and are confident that the airport will flourish under new ownership. Not quite! But business people and Iraqis living in Britain, especially the Midlands, will be pleased by the news that Birmingham Airport will now be served by flights to the Northern Iraq towns of Erbil and Sulaymaniyah.

More choice brings premium fares down

A new age in transatlantic air travel is near - meaning there’s more choice if you want to hop over the pond.
But will it drive prices down? Opinions are mixed. The number of seats on offer this year on flights from Heathrow to north America could rise by more than 20 per cent on 2007 figures.
That’s a result of the open skies agreement that allows full competition between airlines from Heathrow from March 30.
Previously only four airlines - two from the UK and two from the USA - flew from the London airport: British Airways, Virgin, United Airlines and American Airlines.
Now other airlines that include Continental, Delta, Northwest, US Airways and Air France-KLM will launch services.
BA is moving its transatlantic operation to the newly opened Terminal 5 and launching a dedicated subsidiary called Open Skies. It will also offer business-class-only flights to New York from London's City airport.
But Virgin is more cautious and is holding back from expanding its services - warning that the changes may not see reduced fares.
Chief operating officer Lyell Strambi feels fares on the London to New York route will not fall significantly. He said: “"I think...

BMI wins punctuality survey

BMI regional has been named the UK’s most punctual airline for 2007, according to official statistics published by the CAA - the third successive year the airline has won the title.
More than 90 per cent of the airline’s flights were on time in the period January-December 2007, and delays averaged less than six minutes. BMI regional was in pole position at all of the surveyed UK airports from which it operates.
BMI regional has been a consistent top performer in the on-time stakes, having been named as the most punctual airline overall for 2005, 2006 and now 2007.
Over the same period, parent airline BMI also kept its crown as the most punctual British airline out of Heathrow. The airline is third overall at the airport, 20 places ahead of its rival British Airways and 22 places ahead of Virgin Atlantic.
BMI regional commercial director, Peter Kenworthy, said: “Punctuality is a top priority for the business traveller and is something we constantly strive for. It is the cornerstone of our success. Our customers have come to know and expect timely departures and arrivals and reliability as standard.

Farewell tour for classic aircraft

If modern flight is all just a bit too mundane now is your chance to grab a seat on some of the very last Dakota flights.
Euro legislation means that the DC-3 will soon be unable to make passenger flights.
The propeller driven aircraft is one of the all time classic flying machines and was an instant hit in the skies in its 1930s and 40s heyday.
And to mark the last days of the classic aircraft a farewell tour is offering passengers a chance to climb aboard.
Airports across Britain are being used for the pleasure flights on a DC-3 operated by Air Atlantique.
Flights take off from Norwich, Coventry, Durham, Blackpool, Cardiff, Exeter, Newquay, Bournemouth and Belfast and will be operating until early July. The Euro laws come into effect on July 16.
Details of the farewell tour are on the www.classicflight.com website.
A spokesman said:
“The tour will see us bringing the Daks to airports throughout Britain. We'll be asking people to join us for a commemorative flight and to hear the thunder of those great Pratt and Whitney engines for what could be the last time.”...

Rising Oil Prices Fuels Flights Debate

Do rising oil prices mean the end of cheap flights for travellers?
With the price of a barrel of crude hitting $135 - and predicted to soar to $200 - many onlookers are forecasting tough times ahead for budget airlines.
But Europe’s biggest low cost airline Ryanair is refusing to accept the fact that high oil prices will kill off the cheap flight sector.
Chief executive Michael O’Leary argues it will instead help his company attract more passengers from the likes of British Airways because of a series of surcharges imposed by traditional airlines to cover increased fuel costs.
Mr O’Leary said: “The era of low cost air travel is not over. Rather, the era of high fare air travel is over.”
Ticket prices with Ryanair will remain low, he said, and the airline is “committed to a policy of no fuel surcharges”.
Fares will rise by no more than five per cent this year, Mr O’Leary said.
The airline will cover rising fuel costs by increasing additional charges such as for baggage check-in.
And Ryanair is tightening its belt elsewhere. It has imposed pay freezes on staff and closed down a Dublin call centre. Some of its aircraft will be...

KLM Boss Predicts Some Airlines Could Go Bust

A number of airlines could fold in coming months, the boss of one of the world’s biggest carrier has predicted.
KLM chief executive Peter Hartman fears rising fuel costs will account for companies that haven’t hedged against the ongoing increase in oil prices.
Dutch airline KLM hedges its own fuel contracts three to four years in advance.
But even so, it will still be spending at least £790,000 more on fuel this year than it did in 2007.
Mr Hartman expects some smaller airlines could be forced to merge with larger competitors.
He said: “"In the coming months there will be a shake out in many corners of the industry, including some low cost carriers.
“We don't know what the reaction of the consumer is going to be in the current climate.
“But one response could well be faster consolidation within the industry."

The Future of Flight

Air travellers will be able to experience Emirates Airline’s state-of-the-art A380 aircraft for the first time on 1st August, when the airline launches its first A380 commercial service from Dubai to New York JFK. The 14-hour non-stop flight will also be the first-ever commercial A380 service to The Americas.
After New York, these aircraft are slated to operate on Emirates’ routes from Dubai to London Heathrow, and Sydney-Auckland.
Emirates’ A380 interiors and onboard product, which have been kept under wraps so far, will be revealed for the first time when the airline receives its first A380 from Airbus’ Hamburg facility on 28th July.

The A380 can fly up to 12,000 kilometres on a full passenger load, and offer better fuel economy per passenger kilometre than most hybrid passenger cars. The A380 is also quieter, both inside and outside of the cabin, which means more comfort for passengers and a smaller noise footprint.

Emirates expects delivery of five A380s in its current financial year, all featuring its ultra long-haul configuration of 489 seats: 14 in First Class, 76 in Business and 399 in Economy; with 13 tonnes of bellyhold capacity for cargo. ...

British Airways' subsidiary airline OpenSkies launched its first commercial flight today (June 19) between Paris Orly and New York JFK. The airline will operate daily services between Paris and New York on Boeing 757 aircraft carrying up to 82 passengers. "We are confident that OpenSkies will have a successful future," said British Airways' chief executive Willie Walsh. "It will benefit from British Airways' experience in the transatlantic market and respond quickly to changing customer demands. "OpenSkies will become a test-bed for new customer services and onboard products that we hope to integrate into British Airways' fleet." The airline is expected to compete effectively despite the tough economic climate, he said. "It has a low cost base and support from British Airways in key areas such as sales and marketing. This differentiates it from some new airlines that have failed recently which were operating in isolation without the backing of an established carrier," he added.

Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways is adding a third daily flight to London Heathrow from the UAE capital, as of October 2008.
The new service brings the total number of flights to Heathrow each week from 17 to 21. Demand for flights between the UAE and UK has grown in the last year, with more than 306,000 passengers on the Heathrow service and 146,000 on the Manchester service.
Heathrow is one of Etihad’s longest serving airports, having begun services in March 2004, only five months after the launch of the airline. Travellers between Abu Dhabi and London Heathrow do so for both business and holidays. Holiday makers can take advantage of Etihad’s long haul routes via Abu Dhabi, including Sydney, Singapore and Bangkok as well as those who visit the UAE capital in its own right for a short break.

Montenegro airlines now scheduled from Gatwick

You might not have even heard of Montenegro; but if you haven't, now's the time ot surf the web or pop inbto your local travel agent to find out more. That's because British visitors to Montenegro can now take more affordable scheduled flights from Gatwick airport, instead of having to fly chartered, or via Croatia. This bodes well for the country’s booming tourism industry.
This small country sandwiched between Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovenia and Albania has a long coast line on the Mediterranean, and The World Travel and Tourism Council has predicted that it will become the fastest growing travel and tourism economy in the world. More direct flights from the UK to Montenegro must surely take it a step closer to achieving this.
This year, The Montenegrin Ministry of Tourism says tourism has grown six percent on the same period last year. According to estimates, there will be a 13 percent increase on the 1.15 million tourists that visited Montenegro last year, taking this years number of tourists up to 1.3 million.

Low budget airline price war

Despite an 85 per cent fall in profits in the first quarter of 2008, Ryan Air surprised the market and consumers alike this week when maverick boss Michael O'Leary announced a price cutting strategy, in the face of rising oil prices and a global economic downturn.
Meanwhile, British Airways warned fares will go up by four per cent and is planning to axe five per cent of its winter flights. Short-haul and domestic flights from Gatwick and Heathrow to regional airports will be most at risk of the axe when BA announces its own first quarter results at the beginning of August.
O'Leary said: "We believe our average fares for the year may fall by as much as five per cent if European air fares plunge this winter. Ryanair will lead this downward pricing at a time when most of our competitors are hoping to raise fares and fuel surcharges. We will continue to absorb higher oil costs, even if it means short-term losses."
Rising oil prices, which averaged $117 a barrel in the first quarter of 2008 compared with $61 a barrel in the same period last year, is responsible for Ryanair's profits dropping to £16million. It faces losses of up to £47.3million this year compared with the record...

No passenger protection if airlines go bust

The Air Travel Insolvency Protection Advisory Committee (ATIPAC), which advises the Civil Aviation Authority, says more financial protection must be offered to protect passengers when airlines go bust.
The committee said it had strong concerns over the lack of financial protection for air travellers booking directly with scheduled airlines.
Highlighting the failure of UK business class carrier Silverjet, and US rivals MAXjet and Eos in the last seven months, in its eighth annual report, ATIPAC said these airline failures demonstrated the “significant financial” loss passengers can be exposed to in the event of an airline going out of business.
Chairman, John Cox, said: "Airlines are not providing suitable protection and advice for their passengers. Information about financial protection is negligible and, in the event of an airline failing, passengers often have no choice but to pay their own repatriation costs. Those yet to travel often have to pay for replacement flights or face losing the value of any pre-paid element of their holiday.”
However, if you travel with an ATOL-protected tour operator, you face none of these risks, and can...

The Skytrax survey took the opinions of 15.5 million global air travellers, who were questioned by phone, email and online regarding issues surrounding cabin comfort, including cleanliness and amenities, airport facilites and service levels.
In the survey, passengers werealso quizzed about in-flight safety procedures and catering. The survey listed more than 170 airlines. EVA Air has been running a premium economy service since its first flight to North America in 1992.

More gloom post-Zoom

You'd be wise to keep a close eye on budget airlines after the collapse of Zoom, the carrier which went bust last week leaving thousands of passengers stranded.
Soaring oil prices, poor sales for Zoom – despite the company battling to keep transatlantic fares lower than the competition - and a weak economy has created a crisis for airlines, with more than 27 airlines filing for bankruptcy this year.
So being wary is only prudent. If you've made sure you've got a great deal on airport parking with APH, you are probably the type of person who travels properly.
It goes without saying that travel insurance is a must – but check that your policy covers problems with the airline. Many don't.
Purchase tickets with a credit or debit card, and most reputable card providers will provide payment insurance, which means, should things go wrong, you will at least be able to claim your money back.
Now European carrier Alitalia is seeking bankruptcy protection status (which Zoom couldn't get), and it seems certain that as demand for flights naturally declines over winter we will see more airlines get into difficulties. Inevitably, the price of flying will rise – so if a...

Airlines battle for winter business

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) says the global airline industry will lose US$5.2 billion in 2008. But the ongoing problems besetting the airline industry, should mean we – as customers – enjoy a winter of genuine bargains.
Budget UK-based airline BMI is offering twice daily flights on its Heathrow to Moscow Domodedovo route. Economy fares start from £247, including charges and taxes.
BMI has increased a deal with Russian carrier Transaero, which is also increasing its daily services between Moscow and London, with four flights a day in each direction.
And the airline has also promised to slash its fares in a winter sale. Reduced rates are available on bookings made for travel before March 31 next year. Both business and economy fares have been cut on flights across the UK, Europe, the Middle East, Russia, Central Asia and Africa.
EasyJet is hoping its new daily flights from Gatwick to Istanbul will prove popular. Flights to the |Turkish city begin on December 12. Fares start from £35.99 one way, including tax. Istanbul is the fifth new route to be added to the airline's Gatwick base this winter. EasyJet is also adding flights to Lyon,...

Winter flight bargains

British Airways, Virgin and Ryanair have all lauched bargain price seat sales in a bid to boost their flailing profits.
In a move which is clearly good news for the UK holiday maker, Ryanair is offering five million seats for £5 during October and November - including taxes and charges.
The airline, already renowned for its low cost flights, hopes the sale will bolster sales that traditionally flag between the end of the summer holidays and the beginning of the ski season.
And while the recent collapse of a number of cheaper airlines might suggest that the era of cheap flights is over, it seems Ryanair hopes to ride the downturn.
Meanwhile, both British Airways and Virgin Atlantic have been offering cheaper seats in recent weeks, but claim they do so every year at this quieter time of year for the industry.

Mid-east airlines remain bullish

Having announced record annual profits of $1.37 billion, it's good news that Dubai-based airline, Emirates, is cutting its seat prices by 20% on flights from the UK to destinations including Australia, South Africa, the Far East and the Indian Ocean.
A spokesman said the price cuts were a result of the falling cost of a barrel of oil. The reduced fares are available until October 24 and are valid for travel until June 30, 2009.
Meanwhile Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways has set its sights on flying 25 million passengers a year by 2020, according to the airline’s chief executive, James Hogan, with plans to double the number of cities served from 50 to 100. Etihad also saw its busiest summer period in its four year history, flying more than 1.6 million passengers in June, July and August.

Norwich holiday makers affected by flight suspensions

Majorca-based airline LTE International Airways has suspended flights, making it the next likely carrier to collapse, in a 12 month period which has seen 25 airlines go bust.
On its website, a spokesman for the troubled carrier said it "was just not possible to avoid this situation, given world events lately."
LTE only started weekly services in July 2008 from Norwich to Alicante, Barcelona and Palma. It ran seven 180-passenger Airbus A320s from its Palma, Canary Islands and Milan bases.Passengers on the Norwich services were left stranded at the weekend, but tour operator Cosmos which used LTE's services arranged an alternative flight to bring 300 tourists back from Tenerife.
A Norwich airport spokesman expressed deep disappointment at the news, but added that LTE has suggested its flight suspensions are only a temporary measure as the company is not in liquidation or bankruptcy.
And if holiday makers have booked an ATOL-protected package with tour operator Sunways Holidays, the tour operator is responsible for repatriation, or refunds for customers yet to travel, a statement from the airport said.

If you’re excited by the idea of the new Airbus A380 mega-jumbo aircraft, then you’ll be thrilled to hear Qantas will be launching a service from London to Australia, via Singapore, on the super airliner in January next year.

The Australian carrier just launched its first A380 flights between Melbourne and the US west coast. It’s planned to make these flights daily by the end of 2009.
And the first Sydney-Los Angeles flight on the 450-seat aircraft is due to take off on October 24 this year.

Qantas is taking delivery of three A380s by the end of the year, and aims to have eight in service by the end of 2009.

More baggage and more destinations for Jet2

If you're taking a budget break from a UK airport with discount carrier Jet2, you'll be delighted to hear the airline is increasing its hold luggage allowance by 30% - from 17kg to 22kg, on all flighhts from the northern UK airport after April 1st, 2009.
The new deal applies to all flights booked from October 20th, and taken before the end of March next year. Jet2 runs services from Manchester, Newcastle, Blackpool, Edinburgh and Belfast International airports in addition to its Leeds Bradford airport hub.
In practical terms, this means many of you should be able to take plenty of luggage for a short break, with enough room left for those all important souvenirs. We recommend you pack carefully, use a small bag and weigh it before arriving at the airport.
The carrier, which has operated out of the UK for 30 years and flown eight million passengers, claims its 22kg allowance is the best in its business sector. At the time of writing, rival carriers such as Monarch, bmibaby, easyJet, Aer Lingus, Flybe and Thomsonfly, offered a 20kgh limit, while Ryanair allows passengers just 15kg.
Ryanair looks set to offer flights to America from as little as eight pounds, according to the discount airline boss, Michael O'Leary.
The plan is to buy up aircraft from struggling rivals, charge a high price for business class, but an incredible 10 Euro fare in economy seats.
O'Leary says his airline hopes to beat the industry trend by buying up to 50 more aircraft, opening up more routes, and offering even more discount fares, including these special prices to the states.
Keep your eyes open for news of the fares - which are expected to begin by the end of next year - as they are only expected to be available for early bookers (probably on-line, too). The super-cheap fare will not include airport taxes, either.
It is expected that the flights will go from Ryan hub Dublin, and Stansted airport to New York, Florida, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Boston.
Thomson Airways report that all their flights are now covered under the ATOL scheme. This means that customers should be able to book their holiday flights in the knowledge that their money is safe.
Tim Williamson, customer director for the company pointed out: “Our recent annual results showed record profits and as Europe’s largest travel company, we are financially robust. When the changes take effect in October, there will be seen flights per day, and this will include a new mid-morning flight between Manchester and London.
From October, it will operate seen daily flights, including a new mid-morning serice from Manchester to Heathrow, departing 10.50 and arriing in the capital at midday.

British Airways and OnAir has launched inflight connectivity services aboard British Airway's premier business-class only service which links London with New York. British Airways’ passengers can now travel between the two major business hubs, whilst staying connected to their business, family and friends whilst using their own mobile phones or smartphones (like the ubiquitous BlackBerry® devices!) for text messages, emails and Internet access.
The service, which is London City airport’s first ever long-haul route, has the airline’s most prestigious flight number, BA001, previously used by Concorde and is supported by specially configured Airbus A318s, the largest aircraft that can be flown from the airport.

Qatar Airways Makes Historic Journey From London Gatwick

Qatar Airways Makes Historic Journey From London Gatwick To Doha
A Qatar Airways aircraft has completed the world’s first commercial passenger flight powered by a fuel made from natural gas. The historic journey from London Gatwick to Doha took over six hours, using an Airbus A340-600 aircraft powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 556 engines. Shell developed and produced the 50-50 blend of synthetic Gas to Liquids (GTL) kerosene and conventional oil-based kerosene fuel. Qatar State aims to become the world’s leading producer of GTL kerosene when it goes into commercial production from 2012.
As an alternative to conventional oil-based kerosene, it will contribute to diversification of aviation fuel supplies. It burns with lower sulphur dioxide and particulate emissions than conventional oil-based kerosene, so it's attractive for improving air quality near busy airports. The blend of conventional kerosene and GTL kerosene will be known as GTL Jet Fuel. The flight was the latest step in over two years of scientific work undertaken by a consortium of Airbus, Qatar Airways, Qatar Petroleum, Qatar Science & Technology Park, Rolls-Royce, Shell and WOQOD into the benefits of using GTL Jet Fuel to power...

Ryanair announces 4 new routes to Bordeaux
Popular airine Ryanair, has announced it will be launching four new routes from Bordeaux, France, which is just in time for the Christmas season, commencing 17th December. Ryanair feels that this will, at last, offer travellers and holidaymakers to the Bordeaux region competition, choice and very low airfares compared to the high fares and what Ryanair decry as the allegedly unfair fuel surcharges of Air France. The four new routes are to Bologna, Brussels (Charleroi), Edinburgh and Porto.. Ryanair believes the new routes should deliver over 200,000 passengers each year to Bordeaux, providing and sustaining 200 new jobs in the area.
Ryanair’s Ken O’Toole said: “Ryanair is delighted to join up with Bordeaux Airport to finally bring really low fares, competition and choice to consumers. These four new routes from Bologna, Brussels (Charleroi), Edinburgh and Porto will mean for the first time that the people of Bordeaux can now avail of Ryanair’s guaranteed lowest fares, with no fuel surcharges guaranteed, to travel all over Europe from December next."

Recent judgement is great news

Recent judgement is 'great news for air passengers,' says Which
Following a recent EU judgement ruling that air passengers will now be compensated for delays of three hours or more, Rochelle Turner from Which? Holiday responded by saying: “This is great news for air passengers. We hear all too often of people who are delayed for hours at the airport, often without any information about when their flight will finally leave, and are then offered no compensation. This judgement means that consumers will now be compensated properly for long and often frustrating delays, and not just when the airline takes the decision to cancel a flight.”
Currently, if your flight is delayed the Denied Boarding Regulation will not enable you to be granted any compensation. But it's important to remember that the airline does have an obligation to offer you assistance if your delay is expected to go beyond a certain point. At present delayed passengers are entitled to: Two free phone calls, faxes or e-mails; and also free meals and refreshments which are 'appropriate to the delay.'

Travel like a VIP

Be pampered on your flight
Your car is pampered and looked after on its own little holiday break in the APH secure airport parking compound. And when you arrive at your destination you, too, will be pampered and, hopefully, enjoy your holiday. But what a pity about the flight! If only you could be the subject of a bit of VIP pampering during that!

Now, courtesy of Thomas Cook Airlines, you can be! Firstly, you can plan ahead what seats you will be sitting in. And you can also luxuriate in extra leg room, should you wish. Of course, there are charges for these services. For example the seats together and Your Seat, Your Choice service starts at £12 per person, return. And a priority seat selection service costs £6 per passenger per flight. And, should you wish, you can really plan ahead and book this up to 98 days in advance! The extra legroom will cost £23.50, upwards.
And they have what is described as the UKs first internet check-in facility (you can still check in at the airport). It doesn’t seem like five minutes since people were being advised that there would be delays at Gatwick Airport whilst the airport’s shuttle service was subject to a very welcome £45m upgrade.

And now work has progressed to such an extent that the new carriages for the service have already been lifted into place. Two new more modern trains will be placed in to service to move passengers at Gatwick between the North and South Terminals.

If all goes to plan the service should be up and running within time for the July holiday rush. Project Manager, Ralph Abbott told the BBC: "This is a very delicate operation but the team we have here have lifted these cars all around the world.”

The system that they are replacing was installed in 1987, the new train carriages are built by Bombardier.
APH sorts through the baggage

Not sure about how much hand luggage to take to the airport?
It’s worth checking with your airline to see what sort of cabin baggage policy they operate, but APH Hs Made understanding these complex rules simple with our handy baggage chart - here.
We’ve listed all the major airlines – Ryanair, Easyjet, Flybe, BMI, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Air France, Lufthansa, Qantas and KLM - operating out of every major UK airport.
2008 has seen a relaxation in the one bag only policy imposed in the wake of security scares. At the start of the year BAA airports, with the exception of Gatwick, lifted the previous restriction on one cabin bag only.
And now, from April, Gatwick is also allowing passengers to take more than one piece of hand luggage through security.
But it’s still worth looking up your airline’s policy - because some have kept to the one bag limit.
A BAA spokesman said: “Some airlines operating at Gatwick have chosen to continue with a restriction of only one item of hand baggage. Passengers will be advised to check with their airline before travelling to the...

Duty free to your door

British Airways is set to offer duty free goods - without buyers ever needing to set foot aboard a flight.
BA will sell duty free perfumes, watches and electrical goods on its HighLifeShop website, as part of a growing industry-wide trend among airlines keen to maximise revenues in addition to fares.
The airline will pay the VAT on the products in a bid to keep them at similar prices to those charged on aircraft.
Retail business director Richard Cushing said: “We have tested the service to gauge what customers think and there has been an excellent reaction. It will never be a major part of what we do, we are an airline, but we wouldn't be doing this if it didn't make commercial sense.”
The BA website will also include other flight-related products.
Ryanair generates 16 per cent of its revenue from ancillary services and has been testing in-flight mobile services.

US Unhappy With UK Air Tax Plan

The Daily Telegraph reports US embassy officials in London are critical of a government plan to tax airlines on each plane rather than each passenger.

Under new rule, set to come into play in November, the UK government claims its new tax plan will help cut emissions, by discouraging airlines to fly planes that are half empty.

Such a tax, while generating extra revenue, would breach international laws.

The UK Treasury has denied it is proposing any tax, but the US embassy has expressed its deep concern in a letter to the UK government.

The letter purportedly lists a number of international agreements it says would be breached by the new tax, and adds that it can see no evidence of any environmental benefit.

Airlines estimate that under the proposed tax change, the tax payable on a flight from the UK to the US could more than double to £100 per person.

Which-advice on how to book a flight online

So, you need a last minute holiday. But the Internet can be a complicated place to book a flight. Here, APH takes advice from the consumer advice experts at Which? on how to navigate your way to a relaxing break.
The consumer champions give some good striaghtforward advice. For instance, they suggest that a good website should show prices that include all taxes and charges; show prices for flights on adjacent days; have clear details of luggage allowances; let you check in online, and offer ticketless travel (especially as leading airlines have agreed that from 2008 they will no longer issue paper tickets).
For short-haul trips, Which? suggests it’s hard to beat the prices offered by no-frills airlines. To see where you can fly to from your local airport, try lowcost.com, whichbudget.com or oag.com. To compare prices for your chosen route, log on to Skyscanner or Dohop (Dohop is more comprehensive).
The two largest no-frills operators – Easyjet and ...

Dont let the bugs bite

Do you know how malaria is caught? Do you know how to prevent it? Health group Malaria Awareness recently discovered via a survey at gapyear.com that a quarter of travellers do not even take basic precautions against the disease.
According to www.malariahotspots.co.uk , every year around 2,000 British travellers return home with malaria, and the UK is one of the biggest importers of malaria among industrialised countries. It's a preventable and treatable condition, but in its most severe form, it can be fatal - an average of nine people die each year from malaria in the UK.
Malaria is transmitted by an infected mosquito. It only takes one bite from an infected mosquito to contract malaria.
And with the onset of the UK winter, the lure of long-haul holidays to warmer climates and bargain flights is never stronger.
So before you travel, health officials and the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) recommend visiting your doctor or a travel clinic to check whether your destination is prone to malaria - South and Central America, Africa and Central Asia are particularly prone to outbreaks. Your health advisor will recommend a course of...

ABTA Concerned About Travel Insurance

ABTA is concerned that more people will travel uninsured in 2009 due to new Government regulations. From 1 January 2009 sales of travel insurance sold through travel agents and tour operators will be regulated by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) and ABTA is concerned that the cost and complexity of the new regulations will mean that fewer companies will offer travel insurance. This could, argues ABTA, mean more holidaymakers might be tempted to travelling unprotected. Travel insurance typically includes cover for cancellations of holidays as well as cover for accidents and illness overseas and lost baggage.
ABTA's Code of Conduct makes it clear that travel agents and tour operators must draw their clients' attention to the importance of travel insurance.
Mike Monk, ABTA’s Head of Financial Services said: “When you are travelling, make sure you get adequate and appropriate travel insurance for where you are going and for what you will be doing. Ask your travel company about insurance, and if they can’t offer it, make sure you obtain it elsewhere as soon after you book your holiday as possible.”
It might seem possible to save money on travel insurance, but you will need to...

Cultural differences in new holiday hotspots

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office and ABTA have joined forces for the first time to publish a new report that highlights the potential dangers that face British tourists. Or at least the British tourists who fail to understand when they are abroad they really do need to be careful not to offend the social morays of their host nation.
The reports points out that destinations such as Egypt, Mexico and Turkey might expect to see a significant increase in visitors form Britain. This is because early figures indicate that British tourists are now tending to favour destinations that do not use the Euro.
The ‘FCO & ABTA 2009 Travel Trends Report’ shows that the number of British holidaymakers who are travelling to Egypt increased by nearly 40% (actual figures 38%) over the last year alone and that the increase in British visitors to Turkey were up by 32%. But government officials at the FCO have expressed worries that too many British travellers might not be particularly familiar with these destinations. They are, therefore, concerned that this might mean there could be an increase in the number of Britons abroad who find themselves (perhaps inadvertently) in trouble with the local law...

Hotel prices fall worldwide

The average price for hotel rooms world wide fell over the last summer. This is the belief of website Hotels.com. Hotels.com runs what it calls the Hotel Price Index (HPI). This fall in hotel prices was the first first year on-year fall in prices measured in any quarter since Hotels.com began the HPI started in the January of 2004. The average price paid for a hotel room during the period between July-September of 2008 dropped by something in the region of 3%, all of the world. This is based on a comparison to the same period during the previous year, 2007.
The relative weak position of the Pound Sterling during the 3rd quarter of 2008 mean, sadly for them, that UK holidaymakers and travellers won't feel any benefit -at least yet- from the worldwide decrease in hotel costs.
The above trend, coupled with some price rises in Europe (which has, for some reason, managed to beat the trend in the rest of the world) and the relatively stronger position of the Euro, meant, for UK travellers, the average prices for some European destinations rose. And in some caes rose by as much as 30%!
The report from Hotels.com also made it clear that the 3% drop in prices over the world was, at least in part, a result of...

A Luxury that Makes Sense

The UK-designed and built Live Luggage PA Series Suitcase is aimed to make your travel effortless. It offers the latest word in high-tech luxury luggage. It takes the strain out of your journey with power assisted features that reduce the physical strain of moving your luggage, plus providing strong security measures and free baggage tracking.
The PA Series Suitcase has an innovative, extendable handle that pivots away from the case. This is fully adjustable and ensures – no matter how tall you are – 85% of the luggage weight is balanced over the wheels. On smooth, level surfaces like airport concourses, this means minimal effort is required to pull the case and it won’t bang into your heels, either!
For more challenging conditions, perhaps going uphill or across rougher surfaces, power is applied through motors in each wheel. With sensors and an intelligent torque control system, the suitcase provides exactly the right amount of power to the wheels. So your PA Series Suitcase should feel equally light when you are going up a slope or over bumpy ground, and it should even be able to keep up with you if you need to break into a run!
The motors are powered by a rechargeable 12v NiMH...

Follow Billy Connolly

Billy Connolly is on our TV screens with his 4-part epic series Journey to the Edge of the World. This was filmed on his recent 10,000 mile voyage from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean.
If you are inspired by Billy Connolly's journey across Canada, you can follow in his footsteps by asking Bridge and Wickers (020 7483 6555, www.bridgeandwickers.co.uk).
Travelling by sea, road and air, viewers can tag along for Billy's ride. Starting in Nova Scotia, he sets off on an incredible journey taking ten weeks. This involved crossing the Northwest Passage, a remarkable feat that has been the ruin of many an explorer or adventurer. The passage is well within the Arctic Circle, and is usually blocked with ice, so is passable for only a few weeks during the summer, when the passage is ice free.
Other highlights include: whale spotting in Newfoundland, panning for gold in the Yukon and a trip out to see some bears in the the Cariboo Mountains with famed 'bear whisperer' Gary Zorn.
Experts in Canadian holidays Bridges and Wickers can offer the intrigued viewer of the series a taste of the adventure enjoyed by Billy Connolly. You can enjoy the beauty of...

Want an Adventurous Holiday

Whilst everyone likes some time to be spent poolside, there comes a time when you want to do something a little, well, a little more adventurous. If you want some sun bathing and some action, why not hire a hog? Or rather a Harley Davidson motorcycle, known affectionately to aficionados around the world as a Hog.
Guests at the Kempinski Hotel Bahía Estepona, Spain, can hire one of a range of top Harley-Davidson® motorcycles. And can there be a better way to explore the region of the Costa del Sol?
The five star Kempinski Hotel Bahía Estepona offers by request Harley-Davidson® motorcycle rental for either one day or longer, if desired. Bike available include several of these veritable mechanical Knights of the road, including the V-Rod®, Road King®, Heritage Softail® Classic, Fat Boy® and Softail® Deuce models.
The hotel can provide advise on the best biker routes in the area. A spokesman for the hotel said: “A favourite is to travel the curving, scenic route to Ronda, which is about a 50-minute drive from the hotel, perched on top of a steep hill with amazing panoramic views along the way. Ronda is famous for its bullfights and its romantic past of highway...

Disabled travellers

Disabled travellers get a chance to speak out and to learn about holiday destinations
There's a new website that definitely deserves the description 'unique'. For it gives disabled travellers and tourists a voice by which they can rate and review worldwide destinations, towns and cities on accessibility, consideration, and attitude towards travellers who have special requirements.
Disabled travellers can now discover (among other things) how deep the kerbs are, the condition of the road and pavement surfaces and the general attitude towards disabilities in specific locations, BEFORE they decide to travel somewhere. People who use the site can post their own reviews on the site of any destination worldwide to fellow disabled travellers, and reflect the reality of travelling with a disability regardless of what claims are made or legislation is supposedly introduced. Users can also review their own home town or city and will be able to view policies of major airline companies and discover what, if any, assistance is available to them.
“The thing that people fear the most is the unknown” says disabledtravelguide’s founder Sean Gorman. “By allowing disabled travellers...

Snow joke Get your skis on

Skiing first came in to my awareness when there was a terrible snow storm and everywhere locally was cut off. Yet a lone figure dressed in military gear was spotted enjoying cross-country skiing. It transpired that he was a champion Royal Marine skier who decided he wanted to go and visit a friend in a nearby village! But a different and equally terrible snow storm is sweeping through the ski holiday industry, as many ski holiday specialist firms find that they can no longer weather the storm of the recession.
You might have seen press reports about the decision to put a halt to the famous and highly popular Rail Europe Snowtrain service, purely on economic grounds. And the Descent International chalet company has collapsed, as did Ski All America, when it's parent company, All America Holidays, bit the dust. Or should we say, bit the snow.
Things have been exceptionally hard for the ski holiday firms, companies that run the resorts, specialist travel agents and so forth. All caused by the worst recession for many years. Staycations are to blame, consider some experts. After all, if you work in -say- the City and do not know if you'll have a job by the end of the year, you might think, to book a...

Sorry Katie and Osama... these seats are taken
It's official! Well, sort of... Katie Price and Osama Bin Laden are the two people that passengers really don't want to fly with. That's one of the findings from the latest survey of consumer-intelligence.com' by Consumer Intelligence, a provider of information to the insurance industry.
Katie Price was by far and away the least popular person, beating Naomi Campbell by a factor of three. And Naomi wasn't very popular, either! Wayne Rooney, Gordon Brown and Colonel Gadaffi completed the list of passengers people wanted to avoid sitting next to on a plane. The survey found that buyers of travel insurance buyers wanted to sit next to Cheryl Cole, Barack Obama, Angelina Jolie and Michael Palin.
Traveller’s main irritations seem to involve other passengers. Specific problems included being woken up by having the back of seats pulled by the person behind as they get up, body...

Snow joke it is time to go...

Snow joke! It’s time to go skiing!
Top European ski accommodation experts Pierre & Vacances have reported a marked increase in the number of bookings. And they believe it is a result of the recent cold snap in the UK. Some of the less familiar Alpine and Pyrenean ski resorts have reported average sales increases of something in the region of 17%.

Pierre & Vacances attribute this to the recent UK-wide snowfall, which, the company feels, has encouraged families to book holidays on the slopes. They have noticed that trips to the slopes, with self-catering accommodation for the February half term week are strongly in demand.
Business over the past two weeks has been especially good. And January trading is now comparable with last winter. And sales at the moment are showing bookings for holidays later in the season, when rates are, of course, lower.

Sales for the end of March are noticeably high, with ski trips booked for the week before Easter - commencing March 27 – especially popular. This week is classed as ‘off peak’ in France, but is a school holiday in most of the UK. So, of course, British customers are taking advantage of the...

Planning Ahead

I saw an advert recently for a small airline that suggested the best way to go on holiday was just to shove a few clothes in to a suitcase and “get out of here.”
Well, whilst one might sympathise with the desire to just shove some clothes in to and “just get out of here” the reality of such an idea is far from ideal. After all, the sensible holidaymaker knows that the best way to ensure that you have a successful holiday is to ensure that you plan everything as well as you can, beforehand.
There are the little basics like ensuring that you leave the central heating on when you go on a winter break. And making sure that you cancel newspaper and milk delivery before you depart for your 14 day holiday in the vacation destination of your choice. (And more on that destination, later.)
And you should also ask at your local Royal Mail sorting office to arrange to have your mail temporarily held at the sorting office until you return from holiday. You can also ask a neighbour or family friend to sort out watering house plants and garden plants, too, and to check to ensure that your house is safe throughout your holiday.
Incidentally, if you haven't got a burglar alarm, you should...

Dont risk your neck to save a penny

Did you know that according to recent claims, very nearly one quarter of UK holidaymakers are considering saving money this year by not bothering to book travel insurance?
Extreme sport holidays are becoming all the rage, so the idea that there are people even considering saving money by not booking holiday or travel insurance tends to bring experts out in a cold sweat.
The traditional adrenaline fuelled holidays like mountain walking or even a spot of light mountaineering are as popular as ever, but walking on glaciers, visiting volcanoes, bungee jumping, paragliding, heli-sking and more are becoming increasing popular. And the last thing you want to do is to attempt anything adventurous without the benefit of adequate holiday insurance. You don't want to think about the cost of hiring a private air ambulance from the nearest airport to the mountain that you fell off, not to mention the cost of the ambulance to take you to the airport.
And the best reason not to think about holiday insurance? Because you have already had it all taken care of well before you leave for your exotic and adventurous holiday. And before you think: “Oh, that doesn't concern me! I am only going to read my book on the...

For some of us, there is nothing like a deckchair by the poolside, a long, cool drink and a plentiful supply of reading material to while away the time as we relax safe in the knowledge that the only thing that matters on our holiday is our quality time.
So what books are available for us to read?
Life Starts Now, by Maria Lawson
Maria Lawson rose to fame on The X Factor four years ago in 2005, but she had already enjoyed considerable success as a singer/songwriter before The X Factor. She3 had secured a recording and publishing contract through her own efforts and was determined to really break into the music industry.
Life Starts Now follows Maria’s journey from the position of a hopeful unknown, through the auditions and all the through to her appearance on the programme itself. Maria takes the reader behind the scenes to find out what really happens as the show is put together.
Her autobiography also documents her early life and reveals exactly why this ambitious young girl from a rather ordinary and somewhat humble background was able to fulfil her dream of TV stardom and recording industry success.
It's an honest and rather heart-warming account and Maria explains how she...

Flying in to fear

There are many people whose dream holiday can be spoilt by the fact that they do not, in particular, like travelling. Or, more particularly, they do not like flying. And this fear of flying can be a major concern. Some people are OK with everything about flying, except for the landing or the take off. Others just don't like the bit in between, or hate all of it from taxiing toward the take-off to taxiing away from the landing!
Some people think they may just have to grin and bear it, others self-medicate with alcohol (often with disastrous consequences) or some people just never fly at all. Either way, the result can be spoilt or even totally ruined holidays, with perhaps the sufferer not going away on holiday at all, which can spoil things for the rest of the family or for friends.
How can people overcome a fear of flying?
Virgin offer a service at http://flyingwithoutfear.info which helps people who are phobic about flying to attempt to overcome their fear of flying. There are a number of locations throughout the UK where this Flying Without Fear service is offered, Including locations near Gatwick Airport, Luton Airport and Manchester Airport.
Swine Flu Dont let it ruin your holiday

Whilst swine flu can be serious in people who are already vulnerable (elderly or young children or those already poorly) and whilst a pandemic sounds pretty serious, a pandemic might not be as bad as it sounds. After all, a pandemic just means that a disease is common throughout a region, country or continent.
So, what happens when you get swine flu? You feel poorly, with a fever. You also get a sore throat, you feel tired, you might be off your food, sneeze somewhat and develop a cough. (Actually, that sounds pretty much like all bugs that we seem prone to!)
So, basically, not much happens to you. So is it all a media hype? Well, not exactly. But it does remind one of the bird flu scare of a couple of years back. After all, according to WHO figures, on 5 May 21 countries reported 1490 cases of bird flu infection. Only 1490 cases worldwide? Perhaps that helps put the whole matter into perspective.
What should you do? You don't need to put your holiday plans on hold, but try to avoid any country that has a high swine flu incident rate. Such as Mexico, for example.
If you want to be careful, take a couple of face masks with you. And buy some waterless hand wash. There are some that are alcohol free....

Find out Whats happening

When you are going on holiday, are you the kind of person who does it on a wing and a prayer? Just arriving at your hotel and asking the staff there if there are any cultural or artistic events happening within the area that you are holidaying in?
Or are you more like the traditional image of the Boy Scout? Is your motto "Be Prepared?" By which I mean, do you plan ahead? Before you go on holiday, do you check out what is happening in the area you will holiday in? Or perhaps you choose an event that you would be interested in, such as a jazz festival, art festival, folk music event, beer festival, motor show, fashion show, carnival or what have you? And build your holiday around that event or events?
You can check out the tour guides or look at online sites. Though there is a word of caution required, here. It is alleged that a certain well-known travel guide publisher has –inadvertently- published travel guides written by an author who had not, actually, bothered to visit the countries that he was writing the travel guides on!
One good source of information is the tourism sections of embassies, consulates and high commissions. They will be able to tell you which events are on specific to...

Make sure your kids are safe

Tombstoning (leaping from cliffs into the sea) is a very popular pursuit. It can also have very deadly consequences.
It is a worldwide phenomena, and you must ensure that after you park your car up at Birmingham, London Heathrow or Manchester, you do not leave your common-sense locked up with it.
Government advice is to think before you jump:
* be aware of the depth of the water - remember tides go in and out very quickly - it may start off deep enough but can quickly become shallower
* be aware of hazards in the water - rocks, groynes or debris under the sea may not be visible through the surface
* never jump from any object into the sea while under the influence of alcohol or peer pressure
* consider the risk to others - young children may be easily influenced by the behaviour they witness

Dont Smuggle Food

We might think that smuggling some food back from our holiday is not a crime. But no matter what we might think about the matter, it is a crime and a crime that Customs takes very seriously indeed. What foodstuffs can you take out of the UK? What foodstuffs can you bring back? The government has launched a new online service that will help tell you.
People travelling outside the EU this summer can easily find out which foods they can, or can't, bring back in to the UK with them. The government has launched a new new Food Widget, that’s a special online food travel checker available from government webservice, Directgov.
Travellers can use the Food Widget on the Directgov website as an online quick check to see examples of three foods which you can legally bring back with them from outside the EU. It also contains examples of three foods you can't bring back with you. You can then use the service to click through to a much more comprehensive and fuller list of which food items are and aren't allowed.
The government points out that diseases such as Foot and Mouth Disease and Bird Flu could, in theory, be brought into the UK via food products (particularly those that are containing meat or milk),...

Plan your holiday with care

With last summer’s travel industry failures that left thousands stranded and many others out of pocket, you might like to ensure that your holiday runs as smoothly as possible.
Always check that the deal stands up. If it looks too good to be true, then it might be.
Check that they have the right registrations. That they are ATOL, ABTA or AITO registered. Don’t just check that they have the logos on their brochures, websites or in their shops. Check with the organisations concerned that they really are members in good standing, if you feel you need to.
In general terms you might be better booking a package deal. But you must always ensure that you are properly insured. APH can help sort out insurance. Just check out the website or give them a call if you need any further help.
Consumer Direct offers the following advice:
* if you are booking a package holiday - usually means a holiday consistingof two or more pre-arranged elements (for example flight and accommodation) - check that the travel operator has a bonding scheme or some other form of protection such as those offered by ATOL, ABTA or AITO. These will usually give you financial protection and arrange to get you home if the...

Make it a holiday to interest

There are many reasons why people go on holiday. Relaxation, seeing new sights, new faces, enjoying new sensations. Some people, however, want something a little different. They want to pursue their hobby but in a different environment.
For example, parachuting toward the rural British countryside is vastly different to parachuting toward the Nevada Desert. Sailing a dingy round the coast of Britain or sailing the same -or similar- type of boat toward the Great Barrier Reef is very different. Both are enjoyable, but seeing the Great Barrier Reef from your own boat? Wonderful!
And getting together with other people who enjoy the same leisure pursuits that you enjoy (writing, photography, cooking, painting, water skiing, abseiling, mountain climbing, etc., etc.) in an exotic and/or warm location must be an ideal holiday for the person that is really into their leisure pursuits.
How do you find out about this kind of leisure pursuit holiday? If there are any magazines that are published for your hobby, just look through the classified advert section. There you should find some adverts by people who offer the kind of holiday that you are looking for. Some hotels or guest complexes specialise in offering...

How to ensure your holiday will not be spoilt

The possibility that you will not be able to go on holiday because your travel firm has collapsed (or worse, that you become stranded hundreds or thousands of miles away from, home) is not a pleasant one. However, don't let that put you off booking your summer holiday. There are certain steps that you can take to try to ensure that, should things start to go wrong, that the situation is not as stressful as it could otherwise be.
For example, always pay for your holiday with a credit card. Not a debit card. But a credit card. Why? Because you can claim your money back from the Credit Card Company.
The recent collapse of Scottish travel firm, ScotTravel, has caused concerns. Rochelle Turner from Which? Holiday says: “With yet another tour operator collapsing and leaving holiday-makers stranded, it’s really important that people take steps to ensure they are protected should a similar incident occur in the future.
“If you pay for your flight with a credit card or book it as part of a package holiday then you shouldn’t have any problems getting your money back. The same applies for people who book through an ATOL bonded travel agent or operator. You may even be covered by...

Tips for Driving Overseas

A couple of days ago there was an article written by a major motor insurance broker. They were beseeching drivers to make absolutely certain that, should they be holidaying abroad, they must make absolutely certain that they have the right vehicle insurance. Extended and fully comprehensive, even!
They were -rightly- insistent that drivers must also have passport and driver's licence, VRDs and full breakdown cover. However, it can be argued that the above list could be ignored, with perhaps the exception of the driver's licence.
Why commence worrying about checking your insurance policy or the VRD that you last saw goodness knows when, or if you might get arrested in France for carrying the wrong colour reflective jacket in you car or pulled in Spain for having the wrong type of sticking plaster in your car's first aid kit? Why worry about having the proper insurances for your car when, for a whole lot more peace of mind, you can simply ask APH to park your car for you, instead?
Should you really feel the need to use a car whilst you are holidaying abroad, get APH to sort out a rental car for you at your destination. A drive to the South of France, for example, is tiring and could put an otherwise...

Swine Flu Tips

Swine Flu is still a concern, but don't let it put you off travelling.
By being careful, you can minimise the risk of catching or spreading this –or any other- infectious disease. One thing you can do is to buy some anti-bacterial hand gel or some of the waterless liquid hand washes. Cuticura Hand Hygiene Gel is an old favourite and fits into a pocket, bag or first aid kits. And it is available from supermarkets, chemists and other retailers. Also available is a new alcohol-free hand sanitiser, SOAPOPULAR, as well as another product Quash, which can lay claim to being the is the UK’s “first 100% natural moisturising hand sanitiser with anti ageing properties” so not only does it help kill bugs that spread diseases, it is also good for the skin, too!
If you ensure that you use soap and water and waterless sanitisers as mentioned above, you should help reduce your chances of falling ill whilst on your holiday or of spreading diseases to members of your family or other holidaymakers.
One word of caution, as alcohol is frowned on by some countries, please do ensure alcohol hand wash products are legal to be taken in to those countries and to be used there.

Recession Honeymoons

The recession has caused many people to go into a panic and rethink their honeymoon plans. Although the recession is serious, there really is no need to panic.
And there’s no need to cancel your honeymoon, either. But if you feel that the month-long South Sea Island vacation might stretch your budget until it twangs a little bit too much for comfort, rather than not going anywhere, why don’t you look at something a little closer to home.
Instead of a month on a desert isle, why not look at one or two weeks closer to home? Egypt, Malta, Gibraltar, or maybe ten days at Niagara Falls? Or New York? Walks through Central Park, carriage rides, eating in genuine New York diners and seeing the New York skyline from the Empire State Building’s Observatory, which is located 1,050 feet above the city and you can also dine there, too.
Also, check out the APH website to ensure you get a great price on your airport parking as well.

New way to obtain your visa

One thing that can cause a problem for some travellers is the organising of visas. In fact a recurring nightmare of some travellers is that they have forgotten to arrange a visa! Sadly for some people that nightmare can become a heartbreaking reality, meaning the entire loss of a holiday. To help smooth things over a little, those clever people at Virgin Atlantic have come up with a rather neat plan. Passengers with Virgin Atlantic can now sort out and arrange their travel documents at the same time as they are booking their flight tickets! (“Hurrah!” I hear you cry!)
This has become possible due to a new partnership announced recently by Virgin Atlantic. Virgin Atlantic has linked up with visa specialists CIBT, reputedly the largest worldwide provider of visa and passport services. What does this mean for passengers who fly with Virgin Atlantic? They are now perfectly able to obtain travel visas to many (if not most) nations in the world including Africa, Australia, China, and India, via the Virgin Atlantic contact centre and through their own website, Virginatlantic.com.
CIBT will provide a comprehensive range of travel document services including visas, passports and other important documents...

At last! Cheap calls abroad and internet!
The cost of making telephone calls from your hotel room can come as a rather costly shock. But that's all set to change, according to telephone service provider TravelTalk. For they are offering a new service which will allow travellers to make calls from their hotel room for a only a fraction of the normal cost.
It's the aim of TravelTalk to offer holidaymakers and business travellers with an effective alternative to using their own mobile phones and also to earn some previously lost revenue for hotels. The TravelTalk service should cost callers from 5.99Euros for 60 minutes. A bonus is that there are no hidden costs and no set-up or on going running costs for the hotels. It's reported that under 3% hotel guests use the phones in their hotel rooms to make external telephone calls. It is thought that by the end of 2010 the system will be installed in some 60 hotels. At present only 3 are served
The system has already been installed in three hotels and Clasix forecasts it will be in 60 around Europe by the end of 2010.

Snow time

Snow time
If you are going to fly and the weather is snowy, there are some things that you can do. Firstly, do not panic. Really. It doesn't help and only serves to put your blood pressure up and make you and everyone else miserable.
Secondly, always make sure that you have more than enough time to get to the airport. Leave home earlier than you would normally do. In fact, as well as having your car parking arranged by APH, why not really take the strain out of your arrangements and ask APH to arrange a hotel and parking package? That way you will spend a relaxing night sleeping at an airport hotel, instead of having to wake up in the middle of the night in order to have a stressful and potentially hazardous drive through blizzards and having to negotiate an obstacle course of abandoned vehicles as the time for your flight becomes inexorably nearer.
But there are some steps you can take to make sure your journey to the airport is as safe and as pleasant as it can be in snowy or icy weather:

Ensure that your vehicle's anti-freeze is less than two years old
Make certain your battery is in good condition, with no terminal corrosion

Perhaps you want something different, this year? Perhaps, dare we say it, Disney rodent free? Pumpkin Tours might just have the answer for you. They offer a wide range of less-than-usual holiday adventures. Nobody could describe Pumkin's offerings as run-of-the-mill!

Managing director Eugene Bari, is firm in his beliefs in what constitutes a good holiday: “Our message is simple, Life is for living – get away from the hum drum!”

The introduction: “And now for Something Completely Different” would herald bizarre and surreal comedy from the Monty Python team. But what if you want something completely different by way of a holiday?
Andalucian Adventures may just have what you are looking for. They provide holidays in a variety of locations: Greece, Spain, Italy, Morocco, even in England.
The holidays contain many of the elements of the more traditional brochure holiday. Good food and wine (they also cater for special diets, so long as you advise them in advance) and accommodation, they have what one could call a Value Added Attraction to their holidays. In that they offer course (both for the beginner and the more advanced student) in singing, photography, art and walking.
And if you have a partner who doesn't want to indulge in your passion for music, painting, drawing, taking photographs or walking, then they'll get a £100 discount and be able to enjoy it as an 'ordinary' holiday, whilst you get to enjoy your hobby! Though Andalucian Adventures do point out that it might be advisable to leave them to do their own thing and for the enthusiast to travel alone to their destination.
Do the Ghan

The Ghan, is Australia's legendary rail journey, and it is celebrating a very special birthday. It is 80 years old, this year. The original service ran 1,500 kms from Adelaide to Alice Springs which is at the heart of the justifably famous Australian Outback. The Ghan now continues on to Darwin, and the journey takes 3-days and 2 nights to complete.
The Ghan provides a selection of three levels of accommodation: Which are Red, Gold and Platinum. (The Platinum service was only launched last September)
The Ghan is named after the turbaned and robed ‘cameleers’ who, before roads or rail, provided the only supply route to the middle of nowhere, using camels. The Ghan is a corruption of Afghanistan.
The railway was first open in 1929, linking Adelaide to Alice Springs. Although it was always intended to continue the link to Darwin, this did not happen for a further 75 years, when the track was extended to Darwin. The classic rail journey takes you through the heart of Australia, across deserts, look at the majestic McDonnell ranges northwards to Katherine and the tropical splendour of Darwin.

Rock and Roll Tourism

Graham Forbes, published by Northumbria University Press:
Rock and Roll Tourist is a travel book with a difference. And one that is ideal for your suitcase. For Graham has travelled across many of the world's continents to hear and also to meet bands like Franz Ferdinand, Anthrax, BB King, Jerry Lee Lewis and others perform in big and small venues.
Graham then heads backstage, taking the reader into the secret world of the touring musician. Tall-tales, upsets and travel mishaps in foreign parts come with the territory and are vividly brought to life by Forbes' wry, conversational and sometimes cynical observations.
The author reports this world from his own unique lens - writing from the perspective of everyman, with a personal insight only he possesses. He vividly captures the city, the venue, and that special relationship between the band playing live and the audience.
'He captures for the reader what they can only imagine the lifestyle is really like...not all fun and games...except when it's fun and games,' Paul Barrere, Little Feat.
Some of the weird and wonderful things that the author discovers on his travels include: a God-fearing hooker, the real reason why Charles Manson...

Singapore Botanic Gardens

This year, Singapore celebrates the 150th Anniversary of the creation of its world famous Botanic Gardens (SBG), which now welcomes well in excess of three million visitors every year. It is one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions. SBG is proud of its historical links to Britain, and the 52-acre green oasis “connecting plants and people” was modelled -rather successfully, it must be said, on Kew Gardens, when it was founded in 1859. It's now in the midst of what is today one of the world’s busiest city ports.
At present there's an exhibition: The Seed That Changed The World. This charts the commercial rise of rubber, championed by pioneering British botanists like Thomas Ridley (a director of the SGB 1888 – 1911) to its universal use throughout the world. During the rest of the anniversary year, the SBG has plans for a wide and exciting diary of events and activities. These will include an exhibition on pioneering evolutionists Darwin and Wallace (July), and a photographic exhibition of international rainforests, which is staged in partnership with Kew Gardens and the Prince’s Trust (December).
In its 150 year history, the SBG has grown to include a five-hectare...

There’s been a reported large increase in UK travellers taking self-drive holidays in Iceland. This is due to the currently favourable exchange rate between the UK and Iceland and the fact the price of fuel is presently lower in Iceland than the UK and self-drive holidays in Iceland are now worth considering.
In fact the annual 'Best Value Holiday Destinations' report carried out by the Post Office voted ICeland as the a top destination, making it well worth considering for your next trip. One company offering self drive holidays in Iceland is Iceland ProTravel (www.icelandprotravel.co.uk)
Whilst the majority of British tourists travel to Reykjavik, there’s more to Iceland than the admittedly fascinating capital city, and seeing by using a hire car is probably one of the best ways to do this.
Iceland's main airline is boosting the number of flights from the UK to Iceland this September, with the flight time from London takes three hours. Flights to Reykjavik are also available from Manchester and other airports (including Glasgow) will be available later.
Visit APH not only to book your airport parking, but also to see what great...

Go on holiday and save money

You can still go on holiday and save money
You can still go on holiday and save money and you are probably already saving money on your holiday by using the APH website to arrange your airport car parking. And, if you browse through the APH website, you will be able to find deals on travel insurance, airport lounges and airport hotels too.

Have you considered inclusive destinations holidays? Now, before you start to see visions of Sid James, Barbara Windsor and Kenneth Williams in 'Carry on Abroad' and think back to package tour nightmares that you heard dating back to 20 to 30 years ago, things have moved on a great deal since then. All inclusive destinations are not package holidays! And possibly saving money might not be your primary concern? Perhaps you just want someone else to handle all aspects of booking your holiday?
For example, if you fancy an inclusive holiday in Egypt, Barwell Travel offer some good deals. As part of their continued growth in the long haul luxury market, they are offering some very good all inclusive packages to Sharm El-Sheikh this summer. Actually, you can also save money with Barwell. Take advantage of their early booking incentives...

Staycation Oh great

It seemed like such a great idea, the Staycation. Actually, no, anything with a catchy name like that was probably dreamt up by a bored journalist. Just picture the scene: Everyone was looking forward to the usual summer holiday. Drive the car to the APH car park near the airport, take the air conditioned bus to the airport, fly to the sun soaked holiday resort, enjoy record breaking weather, then fly back home, fully refreshed, take the air conditioned bus back to the APH car park, wake the car, then drive home.

But someone made a mistake. Someone allowed Dad (or mum!) to read a magazine and get an Idea! Oh, no. That's never good... “I read an article in a Sunday supplement! Apparently with the recessionary thingy-whatsit, the in thing this year is the Staycation! We'll book a cottage in the wilds! Oh, DO say yes! It'll be fun!”
So rather than the trip to the airport the family car -which is still too traumatised to remember very much about the journey to the Staycation- is forced to drive 300 miles to a cottage in the middle of nowhere. Did anyone think to have the car serviced? The battery checked? No. So the journey was enlivened by a rather kindly gent in...

Why not take a sea green cruise

World Expeditions cruises carry a maximum of 56 passengers aboard specially ice-strengthened expedition ships that are especially designed and constructed to have as small an impact as possible on the delicate Antarctic flora and fauna.

Visitors on World Expeditions’ 11-day Antarctic Explore cruise can see Antarctic wildlife, majestic landscapes and monstrously huge icebergs whilst enjoying a tour that is not only dedicated to providing guests with a high level of enjoyment, but to ensuring that the impact on the Antarctic environment is kept to a bare minimum.

You will have the opportunity to make trips ashore. In keeping with the ethos of World Expeditions, the groups are deliberately kept as small in number as possible. Guests will have the opportunity to relish truly memorable walks across unspoilt landscapes as they gaze upon unforgettable walks encircled by snow-capped peaks, giant icebergs and startling blue seas.
There will be opportunities for unplanned wildlife encounters. Maybe you can see a whale? Or walk through through penguin rookeries? Look at seal colonies? You won't just be left to gaze and wonder, though, pleasant as this might be! You will be accompanied by leading...

Green Travel

The message is clear. We need to be greener! Well, pardon me for just a moment, but exactly how clear is that message?
Many single issue campaign groups call upon us, the ordinary folk, to give up flying to our holiday destinations, whilst hoping that we will not notice that they are flying off to exotic locations all around the world for 'green conferences.'
And if everyone were to stop flying to these various holiday destinations around the world, what would happen to the people who live in those destinations? Poverty and starvation would ensue, plus the usual calls for urgent aid and financial assistance from the developed countries! Far better to allow native people (be they natives of Rhyl or the Maldives!) to earn their own money by exploiting the natural assets of their homeland. Hardly a 'green option' one would have thought.
Carbon offset. It sounds good, but how does it work? Some firms will on the behalf of their clients (tour operators, airlines, etc.) will plant a tree every time a holidaymaker flies off from a UK airport like Birmingham, or Heathrow. Trees are very good at consuming Carbon Dioxide and breathing out Oxygen.
But how can you be certain that the tree has been planted...

California Green Dreaming

When you think of California, you might think of Hollywood and West Coast excess. But there's much more to California than that. Because with its many and varied eco-friendly travel options, California works hard to ensure that it is easy and convenient for holidaymakers to enjoy a sustainable holiday (or should that be vacation?!) in California.
“With millions of visitors touring California every year and leaving behind their carbon footprint,” said President and CEO Caroline Beteta of the California Travel and Tourism Commission (CTTC), “it is our responsibility as part of the tourism industry to not only provide sustainable travel alternatives, but to help make those options effortless so our travellers will embrace them on their next visit to the Golden State.”
Los Angeles International Airport, along with LA/Palmdale Regional Airport and the Van Nuys Airport, and the LA/Ontario International Airport in the Inland Empire Region, are evolving into very green airports, with even the iconic pylon lights at Los Angeles International Airport LAX changing from traditional lamps to environmentally friendly LED lights.
The board that controls the airports adopted a green building...

Take a greener more natural break

Gardening is growing in popularity throughout Britain. And growing one's own food is a particular part of this resurgence of a once widespread hobby.

It's well-known that what is described as the classic Mediterranean diet, which is redolent in locally-sourced fruits, vegetables and salads keeps the people of Spain living longer and more healthy lives. Holiday company Camino Holidays will provide a truly memorable five day long holiday (between October 12-18) for anyone wanting to learn about the vibrant world of Spanish organic food gardening.
Just picture the olfactory delights and the visual wonders of Spanish fruits and vegetables as they ripen under the warming influence of the Spanish sun, with fruit trees laden with oranges and lemons just waiting to be plucked waiting to be picked. And then there are the gently fragrant Spanish herbs, just wiaitng to be crushed by hand...

What you can discover on this wonderful holiday are the secrets of how the Spanish grow their own food. And how you can have a go at growing traditional foods in your own garden back at home. You'll also have the fantastic opportunity to visit organic farms, smallholdings and plant nurseries.

Environmental Research And Educational Marine Programme

Guests who enjoy the fulsome hospitality on board the Royal Clipper, one of three tall ships in the Star Clippers fleet, can now undertake work in marine research and learn about the marine biology and ecology of the location which the ship is sailing through.

Star Clippers’ owner and founder, Swede Mikael Krafft, is also a dedicated and somewhat fervent environmentalist. Mikael has appointed Italian Marine Biologist Dr. Mariano Peruzzo, as the resident marine expert on board Royal Clipper for its summer 2009 season of Mediterranean sailings. Royal Clipper will cross the Atlantic in October 2009 for the Caribbean season, where the project will continue.

For no extra charge, Dr Peruzzo, a graduate in biological sciences at Genoa's University, gives passengers daily talks on marine biology, which are always interesting and always relevant to the area in which the ship is sailing.
Dr Peruzzo also offers entertaining and informative presentations on the history of oceanography, coral reefs, cetaceans (that's whales and dolphins), marine reptiles like turtles and the relevant geology. The lectures encompass a wide range of environmental matters like climate change, its causes and...

Safari Company Shows Green Sustainable Travel

Sustainable Travel International has an interesting claim. Apparently it is the first company in Africa to have completed the Self-assessment process through it's Sustainable Tourism Eco-certification Program™ (STEP).
The Responsible Safari Company has received STI's Self-assessed two star rating, so becoming the first company in Malawi to receive a sustainable tourism certification.
“We launched our company in January 2009 and began using STI’s Self-assessment Tool, hoping it would help us implement sustainable systems for our company from its outset,” says Kate Ward, who is a co-owner of The Responsible Travel Company.
“Being based in Malawi has presented many challenges in creating sustainable systems to ensure our company follows the necessary criteria. With expert and understanding guidance from the STI, we have been able to put systems into place to use as a basis for our company’s vision and goals for future development. The process has been extremely educational and continually reinforces our belief in the importance of sustainable business practices within the tourism industry.”
STEP is thought to be currently the only global sustainable tourism...

SEE Turtles mixes Conservation and Fun

If you are a wildlife fanatic with a passion for exploring interesting places, then SEE Turtles (www.seeturtles.org) and Ecoteach (www.ecoteach.com) have something very special for you.
You can visit some of Central America’s sea turtle and manatee conservation projects at Costa Rica Wildlife Adventure. This is described as a one-time-only 9-day exploration of Costa Rica and Panama is planned for September 26th to October 4th 2009. The holiday will be made even more interesting by the presence of trip leader sea turtle conservationist Brad Nahill.
You can visit one of the country’s most successful conservation projects in Parismina, situated south of Tortuguero National Park. For far too long the region was a Mecca for poachers of turtle eggs, meat, and shells. Unfortunately local residents depended on these activities to survive.
Save the Turtles of Parismina, which is a coalition of local villagers and reformed poachers, is working very hard to deal with this problem. They started out by building a turtle hatchery and the establishment of a programme of turtle conservation. Now that in excess of 20 local...

Be careful out there

The reported story of Jamie Neale, the 19-year-old backpacker who was missing for two weeks in the harsh environment of the Australian outback (he was rescued by two other backpackers) is a very important lesson to all people who like to go on adventurous holidays. Jamie Neale could have avoided much of his problems by following these four, simple rules:
1) Do not trust to luck.
2) Always, always, always carry the correct equipment with you. If you are going to walk or trek in a potentially hostile environment you should never do this alone, if you can possibly avoid it. Even the most experienced hiker or hill walker can have a trip or fall and injure themselves. Make sure you have the correct clothing and proper footwear with you. Also, carry emergency rations and a small survival kit with you. This should include a powerful whistle and a small torch. Take your mobile phone, having ensured it is fully-charged.
3) Tell people when you are going; tell people where you are going.
4) Keep in regular contact with your family or friends if this is at all possible. Or failing that, with your hotel or hostel.
If you do not know what correct equipment you should take with you on a lone trek –...

If you like to experience the unusual and don't mind the dark, aren't scared of bats, creepy-crawlies and the like: Why not make time to visit a cave?

There are many different caves in the world (some giant) that you are able to visit. These are only some of them, in alphabetical order)

Cango Caves in South Africa.
An extremely popular cave. It is nearly 30km from the town of Oudtshoorn. And it is situated at the head of the beautiful Cango Valley. It is described as “spectacular” and this does seem to be entirely justified. The cave is within a limestone ridge that runs alongside the Swartberg Mountains.

The caves are vast, with cathedral-sized chambers and rock formations that tower over one. Well worth a visit if you like caves and are visiting South Africa.

Nera Caves, Andalucía, Spain
These magnificent caves have been transformed in to a subterranean theatre, which is used to host a variety of concerts and ballets throughout the summer. There are wall paintings within the caves that experts have dated as far back as the Palaeolithic period. Archaeological discoveries show that the caves were inhabited right up to...

Are you bored with skiing in the same resorts? Skiing in the Alps is good, obviously, but what if you want to try something else? What if you want to try somewhere else? This might sound like an obvious thing to say, but the only two things that skiing requires are mountains with snow and a ski tourist industry ready to exploit the snowy mountains!
Where else can you go skiing? If money and time are no obstacle, there is skiing in Canada and America (Utah and Colorada are two of the more obvious locations in America) and there is skiing in Australia and New Zealand, too. The advantage there is that as their seasons are the opposite to ours, their skiing season is different and you might be able to spend your Summer holidays skiing! And how different would that be? You could also try skiing in Japan, at Tiffendell in the Drakensberg Mountains of South Africa, too, or even Russia, China and India.
If you just want something that's different but a little closer to home, there are skiing resorts in the Spanish Pyrenees, and also in Andora and the Balkans, too. Scandinavian skiing is very popular (the Royal Marines have done ski training in Norway for many years) and there is skiing (including cross country...

Adventure Holidays
The term adventure holidays covers a whole multitude of subjects and activities. Mountaineering, trekking, white water rafting, river rafting, scuba diving, caving, bungee jumping, safaris and so on.
There is always an element of risk in an adventure holiday. If there were not, where would the adventure be?
However, that's not to say that the element of risk should be so great as to become an element of danger. When a tragedy occurs on an adventure holiday it is usually, although not always, the case that the incident was caused by inexperienced staff, or, conversely, staff who are so experienced that they become blasé about the health and safety of the people in their charge. There have been recent criminal prosecutions in different parts of the world as a direct result of such negligence.
So, should you just forget about jetting out from, for example, London or Birmingham to head for adventure, and instead head for a beach in Spain? Not at all! But what you should do is to try to make sure, for your own peace of mind, that the people who will be responsible for your health and safety really are responsible.
There are a number of travel firms that specialise...

Car Scrappage

The idea behind the concept of car scrappage is the best thing since the sliced loaf... but only if you either own a franchised car dealership or own a company that makes cars. If you are an ordinary car owner/driver, the car scrappage scheme might not be such a good deal after all.
Please let me explain what I mean. You will have seen various articles in the motoring press and the daily papers heavily praising the Car Scrappage discount scheme. Please be aware that the majority of these stories originated as a press release or from a helpful phone call from the press office of either the SMMT or a car manufacturer, offering to 'assist' the journalist write a story sympathetic to the idea of car scrappage.
I recently spoke with an elderly acquaintance who was outraged that, with a variety of clawbacks and other wheezes, he would only get £600 knocked of the price of a new car under the Scrappage Discount Scheme! The other £1,400 being swallowed up by the main dealer and the manufacturer. “I have been buying new cars ever since I first started driving in the early 1950s!” he told me. “If I can't get a better deal than having £600 knocked of the price of a car, I might as...

What not to do when driving in Europe

What NOT to do whilst driving in Europe (MOTORING STORY)First of all, don't forget that you are driving in a foreign country and that not only are their laws different, they drive on the other side of the road! I recently saw a documentary in which a German driver, on hearing the sirens of some emergency vehicles, accidentally blocked the path of an organ transplant vehicle because he had panicked and tried to pull over to, what in Britain, was the wrong side of the road. Try not to do a similar thing on the Continent. Mind you, you should be OK in Gibraltar or in Eire. They also drive on the left side of the road!
Don't forget to get proper insurance. Especially with a hire car. My brother had a hire car totalled by a falling stag. He had decided to pay a little extra for the insurance and only half an hour after leaving the car hire depot a rather large stag leapt from a rocky outcrop and landed on the roof of the car. Which was a write-off. Fortunately my brother and his passengers were by-and-large uninjured. Though if he hadn't gone for the enhanced option on the insurance he would have been in a real financial pickle!

Avoid those cowboy garages

Yee-haw! Avoid those cowboy garages! That's easier said than done, isn't it? Why not go to a main dealer? After a very unhappy experience with a main dealer (an incompetent service engineer destroyed their pride and joy's very expensive CPU) they swore that they would never again visit any main dealer in that motor manufactures' chain, preferring instead to go to a little chap under the arches of a railway bridge.
Whilst some people might think he was cutting his nose off to spite his face, the truth is that the much vaunted quality control system of the manufactures' service division (all their technicians are 'rigorously trained and constantly tested'.' Apparently.) just did not work. And if it can fail once, surely it can fail again?
Shouldn't there be a system whereby garages who are entrusted with the often safety critical work on your car or van can be checked against a recognised standard? And held to account if things go wrong? There are several, but one of the better established is the Motor Industry Code. Or, to give it its full title: The Motor Industry Code of Practice for Service and Repair.
How does it work?
The Motor Industry Code of Practice for Service and...

Buying tyres on line

Buying tyres online? Be careful
Online shopping is still a growing business. Books, DVDs, electronics goods, even garden gnomes, almost anything, it seems, can be bought via the online virtual shopping malls. Even tyres.
But some experts are worried motorists who hope to buy their next set of tyres via the Internet might be putting their safety and the safety of other road users at risk, by choosing tyres with a lower speed symbol than is recommended for their car. Previously, most drivers bought tyres at the local garage or tyre fitter when they needed to be changed. But with the boom in online this that and the other, buying tyres online is becoming an increasingly attractive option. But is it always the right one?
Safe vehicle handling is partly dependent on using the right type of tyres. And TyreSafe, the industry safety body, urges motorists to consider that selecting tyres of the recommended size, load index and speed symbol is essential to...
