APH brings best value airport parking convenience to north England

You can now pre-book your airport parking through APH at Robin Hood Doncaster Sheffield Airport and at Durham Tees Valley Airport. The new parking deal will enable holiday makers and business travellers alike to enjoy all the benefits of airport parking services – at both airport sites.
Sharon Kenny, APH’s marketing head, said: “The addition of these two airports to our portfolio means we can now offer great savings for independent travellers at every major holiday airport across the UK. We pride ourselves on providing the right product for each and every customer, and this deal goes a long way to ensure we are doing just that.”
The two airports are owned by Peel Airports Group. The deal was forged with Peel to sell their parking space at Doncaster and Durham after the success of APH’s existing agreement with them spanning seven years of airport parking at Liverpool Airport’s Long Stay car park.
The car parks include the Robin Hood Long Stay Car Park at Doncaster and the Durham Tees Valley Park & Stay Car Park.
Doncaster’s Robin Hood Airport is the UK’s newest airport. It has now handled 2.85 million passengers since opening in April...

Airport expansion gets go-ahead

Stansted Airport in Essex, UK has been given the green light to expand.
Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon made the announcement in a written statement to Parliament. Permission to expand the site was orginally refused in 2006, on grounds of noise and environmental concerns, but a public enquiry was held, in which airport owners BAA said it would put measures in place to control, manage and minimise predicted impacts on the local environment.

BAA wants to increase passenger numbers from 25 million to 35 million a year, and up the number of flights leaving the airport from 241,000 to 264,000 a year. Unions say the move will bring more jobs, but objectors still feel the expansion will decrease their quality of life.

Stansted boss, Stewart Wingate, said the decision was "great news" for passengers. Members of the Stop Stansted Expansion (SSE) campaign group have held a long-running campaign against the plans. BAA...

T5 hotel promises luxury

If your idea of an airport hotel includes fine dining and five star luxuries then the forthcoming opening of the Heathrow T5 Sofitel could answer your dreams.
The £180 million Sofitel London Heathrow is set to become one of Europe’s largest airport hotels when it opens in June 2008.
It will connect directly to T5 by a link bridge and Albert Roux is in charge of its menus at Brasserie Roux.
The hotel has been designed with five towering steel and glass atriums and its interior design includes work by the company that decked out the Burj Al Arab, Dubai, and Four Seasons Hotel, Hong Kong - KCA International Designers.
Each of the 608 bedrooms is individually styled and has triple glazed windows - to help make sure of a good night’s sleep. If you fancy a bit of grandeur then the Imperial Suite offers 165 square metres of space.
There will be a spa area with 24-hour gym, treatment rooms, sauna and steam room, and there’s a 117-seat tiered theatre complete with cinema projection....

Go green at Heathrow with Park Inn

After you've parked at Heathrow, you might like to salve your environmental concerns by opting to stay at the Park Inn Heathrow. That's because this 881 room property is the first hotel at the UK's busiest airport to receive a silver award for environmental practice from the Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS), which operates a sustainable tourism certification scheme across Britain.
Park Inn's responsible business programme aims to reduce negative environmental impacts, as well as outlining responsibility for employee and guest health and safety, and wider social and ethical issues.
The GTBS grades businesses on energy and water efficiency, waste management, biodiversity and other green factors.

SkyTeam opens co-branded lounge at Heathrow

If you're travelling from Heathrow with one of the 'SkyTeam' Alliance of airlines, you'll soon be able to take advantage of what sounds like a plush new SkyTeam alliance lounge.
As SkyTeam carriers relocate to Terminal 4 at Heathrow, they are also planning an impressive new lounge.
The airlines in the Alliance are Aeroflot, Air France, Alitalia, Continental Airlines, Czech Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Kenya Airways, KLM, Korean Air and Northwest Airlines.
Spokesman Giorgio Callegari said: "SkyTeam understands that airport lounges are more than just waiting rooms for frequent travellers. They serve as a home-away-from-home for passengers awaiting departure - a place to work, relax, dine or catch up on reading. In planning the new lounge space, SkyTeam is focusing on offering customers a superior experience that meets their individual needs."
Opening in autumn 2008, the multi-level co-branded lounge will occupy a space of 1,500 square meters and have around 325 seats. The space will be completed and the second floor open in spring 2009, in conjunction with the relocation of the remaining alliance carriers.
And if you're travelling with a SkyTeam airline before this new...

Star (Alliance) studded lounge now at Heathrow

Star Alliance customers flying from London Heathrow Terminal 1 can now make use of the alliance’s largest lounge. The facility is for first and business class passengers, invited guests and Star Alliance Gold Card holders travelling on any member carrier from Terminal 1.

“The opening of a Star Alliance lounge in a major hub airport such as Heathrow is a major benefit to our member carriers and their customers,” said Lee Hock Lye, Vice-President, Products & Services, Star Alliance. “Rather than own separate lounges and incur duplicate construction and operating costs, Star Alliance lounges save the airlines money, and give customers a high-quality experience in a comfortable environment that is much larger and with more amenities than the carriers could provide on their own.”

The lounge provides 1,650 square metres of space and is located in the international departures area near the flight connection desks in Pier 3. It features more than 300 seats in separate first class and business class sections, food service areas, two business centres with computers, printers, faxes and Wi-Fi Internet access, shower facilities and a special area for...

More space to lounge at London City Airport

We’d all rather be on the plane than waiting in departures - but London City Airport is soothing some of the pain by promising an enhanced pre-flight experience.
From May onwards the airport's departure lounge will offer:
Free Wi-Fi access for all passengers

    250 new seats
    High speed internet access points
    Live sports screens
More retail outlets including WH Smith and Nuance

A new concept bar will be open from the end of May.
The new developments are part of ongoing work by the airport to improve the service offered to passengers who pass through - many of whom are frequent business flyers.
Chief Executive Richard Gooding said: “Frequent fliers demand a premier service and our proven record of transferring passengers to their destinations with ease and speed has ensured their continued loyalty."
“London City Airport has grown in leaps and bounds since its opening in 1987 and the future is even more encouraging as more and more passengers travel from our East London hub.”...

Terminal 5 problems - latest

After the ease and simplicity of parking with APH at Heathrow, many travelers are currently struggling to get through the new Terminal 5, opened by the Queen recently.
British Airways claims the delays are due to baggage handling problems, but this did nothing to mollify the mounting angst of hundreds of waiting passengers. Passengers departing and arriving were affected, with baggage problems causing delays, cancellations and misery.
One fifth of flights to Europe from the troubled terminal were scrapped on Saturday March 29 - 67 out of the 330 scheduled. A further 37 flights were cancelled on Sunday.
Check-in was suspended for an hour on Saturday morning as airport workers attempted to deal with the backlog.
The airline retracted its £100 limit for delayed passengers' accommodation, saying it would look at all reasonable claims for costs.
BBC News reported that airport operator BAA confirmed that a "small percentage" of lifts at the terminal were not working on Saturday, but added they were either not in passenger areas or would not interfere with passenger flow.
BA said it apologised to its customers for disruption and its operational staff were...

Sunny outlook for Norwich

The future looks a bit brighter if you fancy flying to the sun from Norwich. That’s because sun seekers may soon have the option of new routes from Norwich Airport to Spanish holiday hot spots.
The airport is set to announce that it has made a deal with an as yet unnamed low cost airline to fly to Malaga, Alicante and other Spanish destinations. Flybe announced last July that it was scrapping its service to the two resorts - which prompted the airport to seek another operator in a bid to meet demand from holidaymakers.
Now a deal is said to be close to completion and will be made public imminently.
Airport managing director Richard Jenner said: “Since Flybe pulled off that route we have been talking to about ten airlines - most want to start from next summer but there is one interested in starting this year.
“I think we have expanded significantly in recent years, mainly on the back of Flybe, and obviously what we are looking to do now is have a range of carriers that are appropriate to the particular types of routes, instead of one doing them all.”...

Pampering for passengers

Weary travellers looking for ways to relax are likely to shun the bar - for a trip to a nail bar or beauty zone. It seems the growing high street demand for soothing spa treatments and beauty salons is now hitting airport shopping areas.
Heathrow, for instance, has a number of beauty counters, hair salons and spa centres. They include the newly-opened Cocoon Beauty Sanctuary in Terminal 1. In the same terminal is Urban Retreat, which offers 15-minute “prepare to fly” facials and hair dos for just £15.
In Terminal 4 is the HairPOD, a freestanding beauty capsule where stylists offer a pre-flight haircut before you board.
And the launch of Terminal 5 will see new spa suites managed by Elemis in executive lounges for British Airways passengers.
An Elemis spokesman said: “Customers will be able to enjoy a 15-minute well being treatment on a state-of-the-art intelligent massage chair. The departure offering will aid sleep and relaxation, calming customers, so their on-board experience is enhanced.”
Other airports including Gatwick, Glasgow and Leeds Bradford all have beauty zones and nail bars....

Scottish airports battle for passengers

More choice for travellers is a beneficial spin-off of the fight for business between Scotland’s two largest airports. Edinburgh currently takes the crown as Scotland’s number one airport in terms of numbers flying out - but Glasgow is hoping to overhaul its counterpart later this year.
Glasgow has seen a recent drop in passenger numbers with February witnessing a 16.3% fall in charter traffic. But long-haul flights to America, Canada and the United Arab Emirates recorded a 7% increase.
Glasgow Airport spokesman Donald Morrison said: "We are not remotely despondent. We're working hard to get new routes and continue to invest in a new terminal extension, which will open in October and make Glasgow Airport much more attractive to passengers."
Morrison admits that Edinburgh is likely to remain Scotland's favourite airport for the next few months, before Glasgow aims to win back the number one spot at the start of the busy summer season.
He said: "With more than 40 new services, mainly international, set for take off this year, the number of direct flights from Scotland has never been greater. That is good news for Scotland's business community, as well as for...

Luton adds security

If you’re wondering what you can and cannot take through airport security checks, one airport is hiring extra staff to ease the stress.
Increased flights and more travellers have prompted Luton airport to increase security support personnel.
With new flights taking off from Luton through the year it has employed an extra 22 security workers to help - as of Easter, when 120,000 travellers passed through the airport.
They will be on hand to advise people what they can and cannot take through security checks. Passengers will be told of restrictions on liquids in hand baggage and that only one piece of hand baggage per passenger is permitted.
General manager of airport security Yvonne Jakins said: “It’s vital that passengers are properly prepared to travel and are aware of the security requirements in order to pass through the checkpoints as quickly as possible.
“Our security support staff will help to speed up this process and keep waiting times as short as possible.”
A number of new services will be launched from Luton in 2008. They include flights to Wroclaw by Wizz Air and Jersey and Pisa by easyJet....

Stansted’s investment is designed to help the airport cope with the increased numbers that will flow from new flights to and from the airport.

Check on to fly out at London City Airport

If finding a kiosk is always good news for Superman it should be great news for time-hungry passengers demanding a speedy check-in process at London's City Aiport.

That’s because the airport has installed 12 new self service check-in kiosks to help quicken the process. The kiosks will be open from early May and will enable passengers to check themselves onto flights with airlines including VLM, KLM and Swiss.

Melanie Burnley is general manager of customer services and security at the airport. She has overseen the installation of the system and said: “The majority of passengers at London City Airport are frequent fliers who will appreciate the time saving that this technology offers.
Welcome to Heathrow Nature Reserve

Fancy taking in some nature next time you’re at Heathrow? Well, it’s a lot closer than you might think.
The airport site is home to such a diverse range of animals, flora and fauna that open days are being staged for visitors to marvel at the nature on show. Bats, deer, birds and grass snakes abound in land around the airport - as well as plant life, spiders and beetles.
A series of “discover Heathrow” educational walks and talks has now been scheduled. The walks will take place across two separate sites: Oaks Road and Two Bridges Farm. The first walks have already been held in April but more will take place in June.
If you’re interested in seeing more then email heathrowenvironment@baa.com for more information. And if you want to volunteer to help conduct nature surveys or manage the area, you can do that too. Walks last about an hour....

Luton Airport Buses Go Green

If you take an airfield bus to or from your flight at Luton Airport you’ll now be sitting on a more environmentally friendly vehicle.
The airport has bought four new fuel efficient models to replace the gas guzzlers it was previously using - and plans to renew its whole fleet.
Luton’s new COBUS 3000 vehicles feature lightweight aluminium bodies to cut down on fuel bills - and they also prolong vehicle life because aluminium doesn’t rust.
Savings of five litres of diesel per hour - even at the low speeds travelled on airport tarmac - are predicted.
The vehicles also boast wide doors on both sides and easier access for wheelchair users, the elderly and people with pushchairs.
You may also notice the anti-slip flooring and temperature management as you travel from plane to terminal building on the buses....

That’s because new flights to Munich, Milan and Lanzarote will be on offer from next winter (2008 to 2009).
It brings the total number of overseas destinations that you can fly to from the Northern Ireland airport to 34.
More than six million people are set to fly from Belfast this year. And the new flights will help Northern Ireland’s business flyers, the airport believes.
Airport managing director John Doran said the new flights are a boost for the whole Northern Ireland economy.
He said: "At a time when there has arguably never been a greater need for companies here to exploit their export potential we are giving them access to Europe that has never been available before.”...

Stansted Remembers Shuttle

One shuttle flight will never be forgotten at Stansted airport.
That's the day the NASA Space Shuttle touched down at the UK airport back in 1983.
Now Stansted is holding a special exhibition to mark the 25th anniversary of the event.
More than half-a-million people gathered on June 5, 1983, to watch the Space Shuttle as it landed piggy back on the back of a specially modified Boeing 747.
The visit was part of a European tour that included stops in Germany, Italy and France.
To commemorate the landing a one-day exhibition will be held at Stansted this Thursday, June 5.
There will be film footage of the Shuttle landing, together with rare photos and memorabilia.
Retired staff who were at the airport 25 years ago will be returning.
Former head of public affairs and exhibition organiser Derek Winter said: "The Shuttle's visit was probably the most famous event in the history of the airport and I decided I couldn't just let the anniversary go by without doing something to mark the occasion.

Airport Is Good For Your Health

Living near an airport could be good for you.
That’s the surprise result of a survey undertaken on behalf of Birmingham Airport.
The survey looked at implications of a planned new £120 million runway extension.
It claims that 20,000 new jobs would be created across the West Midlands as a result of the development with “subsequent benefits to health”.
But critics say the airport is trying to put a gloss on negative results of a previous survey.
A £50,000 study by experts at Liverpool University had warned of health implications for children at 31 local schools, elderly people and anyone with circulatory or respiratory conditions.
But because the university wouldn’t produce an easy-to-read summary of its complicated 171 page findings the airport decided to commission its own new probe.
Airport acting managing director Joe Kelly said he wanted a “second opinion” to make sure the university analysis was properly understood.
He said: “We believe it has helped our understanding and we will use both reports to produce a health management plan.
“The key message is that both reports conclude the runway...

Airport Increases Fees

How do you feel about paying just to be allowed to leave an airport and fly out?
Norwich airport has increased a fee it charges to every person who departs from the airport.
And that has prompted Flybe - one of the biggest airlines using the Norfolk airport - to warn that passengers may desert it and instead choose to fly from Stansted.
Every person who flies out of Norwich is charged an “airport development fee” which from September will be £5 for adults - up from the present price of £3.
The £1 rate for children remains unchanged.
The fee was introduced in April 2007 to help make improvements to the runway, check-in areas, shops, parking and customer services as part of a five-year £18 million investment plan.
Norwich Airport was sold in 2003 to investment group Omniport for £11m by Norwich City Council and Norfolk County Council.
But Flybe has warned the airport that customers will not appreciate the increase.
A spokesman said: “"Flybe is concerned that this action will give passengers a further reason to choose to fly from Stansted rather than Norwich.

Scots Flying Away

More and more Scots are flying to overseas destinations.
The number of people flying abroad from BAA airports in Scotland increased by 6.7 per cent to 8.7 million in the year up to May 2008.
And soon there will be another 35 routes for them to choose from at Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh airports.
But traffic figures from the Scottish airports are mixed in other areas. At Aberdeen domestic flyers fell by 3.9 per cent - reflecting a UK-wide downward trend.
But numbers leaving Aberdeen for foreign destinations rose by two per cent.
Edinburgh was Scotland’s busiest airport in May with 800,000 passengers.
BAA Scotland spokesman Donald Morrison said: “The bigger picture shows the market in Scotland remains resilient in the face of global pressures with international travel continuing to soar.”...

Delay in London City Airport Expansion Plan - Mayor

London’s Mayor Boris Johnson has jumped into the controversial issue of London’s increasing air traffic.
The city chief asked council officials not to take a decision on whether to increase flights at London City Airport , until the National Air Traffic Services body is given time to review the matter properly. And planners have agreed to defer any decision.
London City Airport hopes to increase flights by 50 per cent to 120,000 a year. Local residents immediately protested on the grounds of increased noise pollution.
The airport won tentative approval for the expansion from Newham Council planning officials on July 23. A final decision was due by the end of July, but Mayor Boris stepped in at the 11th hour in a letter to Newham Council which stated that, while he supported the airport's expansion, he wanted the study to review whether the plan would “blight” areas near the airport and undermine plans to build the Thames Gateway Bridge. The airport said it would co-operate with the review.

Airports - a great place to lose a laptop

Around 900 laptops are lost every week at London’s Heathrow airport. In a report commissioned by laptop maker Dell conducted by the Ponemon Institute, figures revealed that Heathrow tops the table in terms of misplaced, lost and stolen laptops – followed by Amsterdam and Paris Charles de Gaulle airports.
Apparently, in the eight largest airports in the EMEA region more than 3,300 laptops are either lost or go missing EVERY week. Of those laptops which end up in lost and found departments 57 per cent are never reclaimed.
The research also revealed that 42 per cent of business travellers don't have back up for data on their laptops, while 55 per cent said they haven't taken steps to protect it.
The report was commissioned to coincide with a number of new data protection services launched by Dell, but here at aph.com we would recommend a few simple steps to ensure if you do lose your laptop at an airport, you stand a good chance of getting it back – intact:

Heathrow Terminal 5's first hotel opens

After much-maligned beginnings, it looks like Terminal 5 is battling the storm, especially with news today of the first hotel opening at London Heathrow Airport's new area. And it seems if you're looking to start or finish a trip in style, this is the place to be.
With a direct bridge link to Terminal 5, the five star rated Heathrow Sofitel hotel, owned by Arora International Hotels, has 605 guest rooms and suites, making it one of the largest of Europe’s airport hotels. Architect is Stephen Williams, who designed London Chelsea Harbour’s Conrad Hotel. The interiors are designed by Khuan Chew of KCA International, who worked on Dubai's seven-star fantasy hotel, the Burj Al Arab. Chef consultant to the hotel is French legend Albert Roux, while Executive chef Julian Jenkins will be in charge of the kitchen.

Big plans for Exeter

Exeter International Airport, the fastest growing airport in England's south west, has unveiled an ambitious expansion plan.
Airport bosses are touring the county of Devon to show local people their vision for the airport, which serves most European holiday destinations as well as Canada. The Department for Transport's White Paper, "The Future of Air Transport" sets out a strategic framework for the development of airport capacity in the UK. It states that Exeter, “has a distinctive role in serving the local catchment area and there is significant scope for development without major environmental impacts.”
Exeter Airport's Masterplan details runway and terminal capacity constraints which include aircraft size, scheduling, environmental and safety issues. The exhibition shows the airport's development plans until 2030 - including trebling passenger numbers to 3.4 million a year, developing terminal facilities and extra parking. The airport hopes to become carbon neutral by 2015....

If you are using Heathrow's new Terminal 5 over the coming months, you'll probably be interested to hear that it is now the UK's biggest Wi-Fi hotspot, meaning that wherever you are in the terminal, you can use your laptop and connect to the internet at pretty high speeds.
The wireless connectivity covers a space the size of 50 football pitches, and is provided by UK mobile phone operator, T-Mobile. If you are a T-Mobile customer, you get a free high speed connection, that's five times faster than the 8Mbps available to non-T-Mobile customers.
Those not on the T-Mobile network are asked to pay £5 an hour or £10 for the whole day – worth it if you forgot to tell your neighbour to water the plants or feed the cat.

UK airports to get virtual body scanners by 2010

In just a few years you might be subject to a 'virtual strip search' at UK airports - by state-of-the-art digital body scanning machines designed to increase security and speed through aiport security zones.
Privacy groups have already slammed the idea, suggesting that the machines, which use eletromagnetic wave technology to map travellers' bodies and create a 3D map, are intrusive and amount to a 'virtual strip search'.
This new technology is reportedly being considered for introduction for passengers travelling in the European Union.
You may have already seen the sacanners in action in the US, or during a recent trial period at London Heathrow's terminal four.

Slowing air passenger numbers across UK

Passenger numbers at BAA's seven UK-based airports were down 6% year on year in October.
And while that's good news for frequent flyers – meaning you can get through the airports a little quicker – it's bad news for the industry.
The airport firm handled some 12.4 million passengers in October 2008. This year, BAA´s UK airport traffic has declined by 1.9%, for the ten months to October, with a total number of passengers of 125.8 million.
European charter flights recorded the highest percentage drop (-15.7%) while North Atlantic, domestic, European scheduled and other long haul were down 7.1%, 6.3%, 5.1% and 4.3% respectively.

More choice brings premium fares down

A new age in transatlantic air travel is near - meaning there’s more choice if you want to hop over the pond.
But will it drive prices down? Opinions are mixed. The number of seats on offer this year on flights from Heathrow to north America could rise by more than 20 per cent on 2007 figures.
That’s a result of the open skies agreement that allows full competition between airlines from Heathrow from March 30.
Previously only four airlines - two from the UK and two from the USA - flew from the London airport: British Airways, Virgin, United Airlines and American Airlines.
Now other airlines that include Continental, Delta, Northwest, US Airways and Air France-KLM will launch services.
BA is moving its transatlantic operation to the newly opened Terminal 5 and launching a dedicated subsidiary called Open Skies. It will also offer business-class-only flights to New York from London's City airport.
But Virgin is more cautious and is holding back from expanding its services - warning that the changes may not see reduced fares.
Chief operating officer Lyell Strambi feels fares on the London to New York route will not fall significantly. He...

BMI wins punctuality survey

BMI regional has been named the UK’s most punctual airline for 2007, according to official statistics published by the CAA - the third successive year the airline has won the title.
More than 90 per cent of the airline’s flights were on time in the period January-December 2007, and delays averaged less than six minutes. BMI regional was in pole position at all of the surveyed UK airports from which it operates.
BMI regional has been a consistent top performer in the on-time stakes, having been named as the most punctual airline overall for 2005, 2006 and now 2007.
Over the same period, parent airline BMI also kept its crown as the most punctual British airline out of Heathrow. The airline is third overall at the airport, 20 places ahead of its rival British Airways and 22 places ahead of Virgin Atlantic.
BMI regional commercial director, Peter Kenworthy, said: “Punctuality is a top priority for the business traveller and is something we constantly strive for. It is the cornerstone of our success. Our customers have come to know and expect timely departures and arrivals and reliability as standard.

Farewell tour for classic aircraft

If modern flight is all just a bit too mundane now is your chance to grab a seat on some of the very last Dakota flights.
Euro legislation means that the DC-3 will soon be unable to make passenger flights.
The propeller driven aircraft is one of the all time classic flying machines and was an instant hit in the skies in its 1930s and 40s heyday.
And to mark the last days of the classic aircraft a farewell tour is offering passengers a chance to climb aboard.
Airports across Britain are being used for the pleasure flights on a DC-3 operated by Air Atlantique.
Flights take off from Norwich, Coventry, Durham, Blackpool, Cardiff, Exeter, Newquay, Bournemouth and Belfast and will be operating until early July. The Euro laws come into effect on July 16.
Details of the farewell tour are on the www.classicflight.com website.
A spokesman said:
“The tour will see us bringing the Daks to airports throughout Britain. We'll be asking people to join us for a commemorative flight and to hear the thunder of those great Pratt and Whitney engines for what could be the last time.”

Rising Oil Prices Fuels Flights Debate

Do rising oil prices mean the end of cheap flights for travellers?
With the price of a barrel of crude hitting $135 - and predicted to soar to $200 - many onlookers are forecasting tough times ahead for budget airlines.
But Europe’s biggest low cost airline Ryanair is refusing to accept the fact that high oil prices will kill off the cheap flight sector.
Chief executive Michael O’Leary argues it will instead help his company attract more passengers from the likes of British Airways because of a series of surcharges imposed by traditional airlines to cover increased fuel costs.
Mr O’Leary said: “The era of low cost air travel is not over. Rather, the era of high fare air travel is over.”
Ticket prices with Ryanair will remain low, he said, and the airline is “committed to a policy of no fuel surcharges”.
Fares will rise by no more than five per cent this year, Mr O’Leary said.
The airline will cover rising fuel costs by increasing additional charges such as for baggage check-in.
And Ryanair is tightening its belt elsewhere. It has imposed pay freezes on staff and closed down a Dublin call centre. Some of its...

KLM Boss Predicts Some Airlines Could Go Bust

A number of airlines could fold in coming months, the boss of one of the world’s biggest carrier has predicted.
KLM chief executive Peter Hartman fears rising fuel costs will account for companies that haven’t hedged against the ongoing increase in oil prices.
Dutch airline KLM hedges its own fuel contracts three to four years in advance.
But even so, it will still be spending at least £790,000 more on fuel this year than it did in 2007.
Mr Hartman expects some smaller airlines could be forced to merge with larger competitors.
He said: “"In the coming months there will be a shake out in many corners of the industry, including some low cost carriers.
“We don't know what the reaction of the consumer is going to be in the current climate.
“But one response could well be faster consolidation within the industry."...

The Future of Flight?

Air travellers will be able to experience Emirates Airline’s state-of-the-art A380 aircraft for the first time on 1st August, when the airline launches its first A380 commercial service from Dubai to New York JFK. The 14-hour non-stop flight will also be the first-ever commercial A380 service to The Americas.
After New York, these aircraft are slated to operate on Emirates’ routes from Dubai to London Heathrow, and Sydney-Auckland.
Emirates’ A380 interiors and onboard product, which have been kept under wraps so far, will be revealed for the first time when the airline receives its first A380 from Airbus’ Hamburg facility on 28th July.

The A380 can fly up to 12,000 kilometres on a full passenger load, and offer better fuel economy per passenger kilometre than most hybrid passenger cars. The A380 is also quieter, both inside and outside of the cabin, which means more comfort for passengers and a smaller noise footprint.

Emirates expects delivery of five A380s in its current financial year, all featuring its ultra long-haul configuration of 489 seats: 14 in First Class, 76 in Business and 399 in Economy; with 13 tonnes of...

British Airways' subsidiary airline OpenSkies launched its first commercial flight today (June 19) between Paris Orly and New York JFK. The airline will operate daily services between Paris and New York on Boeing 757 aircraft carrying up to 82 passengers.

"We are confident that OpenSkies will have a successful future," said British Airways' chief executive Willie Walsh.

"It will benefit from British Airways' experience in the transatlantic market and respond quickly to changing customer demands.

"OpenSkies will become a test-bed for new customer services and onboard products that we hope to integrate into British Airways' fleet."

The airline is expected to compete effectively despite the tough economic climate, he said. "It has a low cost base and support from British Airways in key areas such as sales and marketing. This differentiates it from some new airlines that have failed recently which were operating in isolation without the backing of an established carrier," he added.

Montenegro airlines now scheduled from Gatwick

You might not have even heard of Montenegro; but if you haven't, now's the time ot surf the web or pop inbto your local travel agent to find out more. That's because British visitors to Montenegro can now take more affordable scheduled flights from Gatwick airport, instead of having to fly chartered, or via Croatia. This bodes well for the country’s booming tourism industry.
This small country sandwiched between Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovenia and Albania has a long coast line on the Mediterranean, and The World Travel and Tourism Council has predicted that it will become the fastest growing travel and tourism economy in the world. More direct flights from the UK to Montenegro must surely take it a step closer to achieving this.
This year, The Montenegrin Ministry of Tourism says tourism has grown six percent on the same period last year. According to estimates, there will be a 13 percent increase on the 1.15 million tourists that visited Montenegro last year, taking this years number of tourists up to 1.3 million.

Low budget airline price war

Despite an 85 per cent fall in profits in the first quarter of 2008, Ryan Air surprised the market and consumers alike this week when maverick boss Michael O'Leary announced a price cutting strategy, in the face of rising oil prices and a global economic downturn.
Meanwhile, British Airways warned fares will go up by four per cent and is planning to axe five per cent of its winter flights. Short-haul and domestic flights from Gatwick and Heathrow to regional airports will be most at risk of the axe when BA announces its own first quarter results at the beginning of August.
O'Leary said: "We believe our average fares for the year may fall by as much as five per cent if European air fares plunge this winter. Ryanair will lead this downward pricing at a time when most of our competitors are hoping to raise fares and fuel surcharges. We will continue to absorb higher oil costs, even if it means short-term losses."
Rising oil prices, which averaged $117 a barrel in the first quarter of 2008 compared with $61 a barrel in the same period last year, is responsible for Ryanair's profits dropping to £16million. It faces losses of up to £47.3million this year compared with the record...

No passenger protection if airlines go bust

The Air Travel Insolvency Protection Advisory Committee (ATIPAC), which advises the Civil Aviation Authority, says more financial protection must be offered to protect passengers when airlines go bust.

The committee said it had strong concerns over the lack of financial protection for air travellers booking directly with scheduled airlines.

Highlighting the failure of UK business class carrier Silverjet, and US rivals MAXjet and Eos in the last seven months, in its eighth annual report, ATIPAC said these airline failures demonstrated the “significant financial” loss passengers can be exposed to in the event of an airline going out of business.

Chairman, John Cox, said: "Airlines are not providing suitable protection and advice for their passengers. Information about financial protection is negligible and, in the event of an airline failing, passengers often have no choice but to pay their own repatriation costs. Those yet to travel often have to pay for replacement flights or face losing the value of any pre-paid element of their holiday.”

However, if you travel with an ATOL-protected tour operator, you face...

More gloom post-Zoom?

You'd be wise to keep a close eye on budget airlines after the collapse of Zoom, the carrier which went bust last week leaving thousands of passengers stranded.
Soaring oil prices, poor sales for Zoom – despite the company battling to keep transatlantic fares lower than the competition - and a weak economy has created a crisis for airlines, with more than 27 airlines filing for bankruptcy this year.
So being wary is only prudent. If you've made sure you've got a great deal on airport parking with APH, you are probably the type of person who travels properly.
It goes without saying that travel insurance is a must – but check that your policy covers problems with the airline. Many don't.
Purchase tickets with a credit or debit card, and most reputable card providers will provide payment insurance, which means, should things go wrong, you will at least be able to claim your money back.

Airlines battle for winter business

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) says the global airline industry will lose US$5.2 billion in 2008. But the ongoing problems besetting the airline industry, should mean we – as customers – enjoy a winter of genuine bargains.
Budget UK-based airline BMI is offering twice daily flights on its Heathrow to Moscow Domodedovo route. Economy fares start from £247, including charges and taxes.
BMI has increased a deal with Russian carrier Transaero, which is also increasing its daily services between Moscow and London, with four flights a day in each direction.
And the airline has also promised to slash its fares in a winter sale. Reduced rates are available on bookings made for travel before March 31 next year. Both business and economy fares have been cut on flights across the UK, Europe, the Middle East, Russia, Central Asia and Africa.
EasyJet is hoping its new daily flights from Gatwick to Istanbul will prove popular. Flights to the |Turkish city begin on December 12....

Winter flight bargains!

British Airways, Virgin and Ryanair have all lauched bargain price seat sales in a bid to boost their flailing profits.
In a move which is clearly good news for the UK holiday maker, Ryanair is offering five million seats for £5 during October and November - including taxes and charges.
The airline, already renowned for its low cost flights, hopes the sale will bolster sales that traditionally flag between the end of the summer holidays and the beginning of the ski season.
And while the recent collapse of a number of cheaper airlines might suggest that the era of cheap flights is over, it seems Ryanair hopes to ride the downturn.
Meanwhile, both British Airways and Virgin Atlantic have been offering cheaper seats in recent weeks, but claim they do so every year at this quieter time of year for the industry.
Having announced record annual profits of $1.37 billion, it's good news that Dubai-based airline, Emirates, is cutting its seat prices by 20% on flights from the UK to destinations including Australia, South Africa, the Far East and the Indian Ocean.
A spokesman said the price cuts were a result of the falling cost of a barrel of oil. The reduced fares are available until October 24 and are valid for travel until June 30, 2009.
Meanwhile Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways has set its sights on flying 25 million passengers a year by 2020, according to the airline’s chief executive, James Hogan, with plans to double the number of cities served from 50 to 100.
Norwich holiday makers affected by flight suspensions

Majorca-based airline LTE International Airways has suspended flights, making it the next likely carrier to collapse, in a 12 month period which has seen 25 airlines go bust.
On its website, a spokesman for the troubled carrier said it "was just not possible to avoid this situation, given world events lately."
LTE only started weekly services in July 2008 from Norwich to Alicante, Barcelona and Palma. It ran seven 180-passenger Airbus A320s from its Palma, Canary Islands and Milan bases.Passengers on the Norwich services were left stranded at the weekend, but tour operator Cosmos which used LTE's services arranged an alternative flight to bring 300 tourists back from Tenerife.
A Norwich airport spokesman expressed deep disappointment at the news, but added that LTE has suggested its flight suspensions are only a temporary measure as the company is not in liquidation or bankruptcy.

The Australian carrier just launched its first A380 flights between Melbourne and the US west coast. It’s planned to make these flights daily by the end of 2009.
And the first Sydney-Los Angeles flight on the 450-seat aircraft is due to take off on October 24 this year.

More baggage and more destinations for Jet2

If you're taking a budget break from a UK airport with discount carrier Jet2, you'll be delighted to hear the airline is increasing its hold luggage allowance by 30% - from 17kg to 22kg, on all flighhts from the northern UK airport after April 1st, 2009.
The new deal applies to all flights booked from October 20th, and taken before the end of March next year. Jet2 runs services from Manchester, Newcastle, Blackpool, Edinburgh and Belfast International airports in addition to its Leeds Bradford airport hub.
In practical terms, this means many of you should be able to take plenty of luggage for a short break, with enough room left for those all important souvenirs. We recommend you pack carefully, use a small bag and weigh it before arriving at the airport.
The carrier, which has operated out of the UK for 30 years and flown eight million passengers, claims its 22kg allowance is the best in its business sector. At the time of writing, rival carriers such as Monarch, bmibaby, easyJet, Aer Lingus, Flybe and Thomsonfly, offered a...

Ryanair looks set to offer flights to America from as little as eight pounds, according to the discount airline boss, Michael O'Leary.
The plan is to buy up aircraft from struggling rivals, charge a high price for business class, but an incredible 10 Euro fare in economy seats.
O'Leary says his airline hopes to beat the industry trend by buying up to 50 more aircraft, opening up more routes, and offering even more discount fares, including these special prices to the states.
Keep your eyes open for news of the fares - which are expected to begin by the end of next year - as they are only expected to be available for early bookers (probably on-line, too). The super-cheap fare will not include airport taxes, either.
It is expected that the flights will go from Ryan hub Dublin, and Stansted airport to New York, Florida, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Boston.

APH sorts through the baggage

Not sure about how much hand luggage to take to the airport?
It’s worth checking with your airline to see what sort of cabin baggage policy they operate, but APH Hs Made understanding these complex rules simple with our handy baggage chart - here.
We’ve listed all the major airlines – Ryanair, Easyjet, Flybe, BMI, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Air France, Lufthansa, Qantas and KLM - operating out of every major UK airport.
2008 has seen a relaxation in the one bag only policy imposed in the wake of security scares. At the start of the year BAA airports, with the exception of Gatwick, lifted the previous restriction on one cabin bag only.
And now, from April, Gatwick is also allowing passengers to take more than one piece of hand luggage through security.
But it’s still worth looking up your airline’s policy - because some have kept to the one bag limit.
A BAA spokesman said: “Some airlines operating at Gatwick have chosen to continue with a restriction of only one item of hand baggage. Passengers will be advised to check with their airline before travelling to the...

Duty free to your door

British Airways is set to offer duty free goods - without buyers ever needing to set foot aboard a flight.
BA will sell duty free perfumes, watches and electrical goods on its HighLifeShop website, as part of a growing industry-wide trend among airlines keen to maximise revenues in addition to fares.
The airline will pay the VAT on the products in a bid to keep them at similar prices to those charged on aircraft.
Retail business director Richard Cushing said: “We have tested the service to gauge what customers think and there has been an excellent reaction. It will never be a major part of what we do, we are an airline, but we wouldn't be doing this if it didn't make commercial sense.”
The BA website will also include other flight-related products.
Ryanair generates 16 per cent of its revenue from ancillary services and has been testing in-flight mobile services....

US Unhappy With UK Air Tax Plan

The Daily Telegraph reports US embassy officials in London are critical of a government plan to tax airlines on each plane rather than each passenger.

Under new rule, set to come into play in November, the UK government claims its new tax plan will help cut emissions, by discouraging airlines to fly planes that are half empty.

Such a tax, while generating extra revenue, would breach international laws.

The UK Treasury has denied it is proposing any tax, but the US embassy has expressed its deep concern in a letter to the UK government.

The letter purportedly lists a number of international agreements it says would be breached by the new tax, and adds that it can see no evidence of any environmental benefit.

Airlines estimate that under the proposed tax change, the tax payable on a flight from the UK to the US could more than double to £100 per person....

Which? advice on how to book a flight online

So, you need a last minute holiday. But the Internet can be a complicated place to book a flight. Here, APH takes advice from the consumer advice experts at Which? on how to navigate your way to a relaxing break.
The consumer champions give some good striaghtforward advice. For instance, they suggest that a good website should show prices that include all taxes and charges; show prices for flights on adjacent days; have clear details of luggage allowances; let you check in online, and offer ticketless travel (especially as leading airlines have agreed that from 2008 they will no longer issue paper tickets).
For short-haul trips, Which? suggests it’s hard to beat the prices offered by no-frills airlines. To see where you can fly to from your local airport, try lowcost.com, whichbudget.com or oag.com. To compare prices for your chosen route, log on to Skyscanner or Dohop (Dohop is more comprehensive).

Don't let the bugs bite!

Do you know how malaria is caught? Do you know how to prevent it? Health group Malaria Awareness recently discovered via a survey at gapyear.com that a quarter of travellers do not even take basic precautions against the disease.
According to www.malariahotspots.co.uk , every year around 2,000 British travellers return home with malaria, and the UK is one of the biggest importers of malaria among industrialised countries. It's a preventable and treatable condition, but in its most severe form, it can be fatal - an average of nine people die each year from malaria in the UK.
Malaria is transmitted by an infected mosquito. It only takes one bite from an infected mosquito to contract malaria.
And with the onset of the UK winter, the lure of long-haul holidays to warmer climates and bargain flights is never stronger.
So before you travel, health officials and the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) recommend visiting your doctor or a travel clinic to check whether your destination is prone to malaria - South and Central America, Africa and Central Asia are particularly prone to outbreaks. Your health advisor will...
