Heathrow Airport Terminal 2 Guide

History of Heathrow Airport Terminal 2

The original Terminal 2 was Heathrow’s oldest terminal. Opened in 1955 as the Europa Building, it was designed by British architect Frederick Gibberd along with the adjacent Queen’s Building, which became the operational offices of the BAA (British Airports Authority).

Over the course of its lifetime, the first Terminal 2 welcomed over 315 million passengers and, although it was designed to handle only 1.2 million passengers per year, by the time it closed in 2009 it had often had to accommodate around eight million.

The building was finally demolished in 2010 to make way for a brand-new, much larger terminal to be built on the site of the old building and the neighbouring Queen’s Building, which was demolished in 2009.

The new £2.5bn terminal opened in June 2014 and was named the Queen’s Terminal. The five-storey main building is Terminal 2A and the 522-metre-long satellite pier, which runs parallel to the main building, is Terminal 2B. The two are connected by an underground tunnel. Although the lead architect for the new terminal was Spanish Luis Vidal + Architects (LVA), the initial design was provided by an award-winning British firm, Foster + Partners.

In 2018, Terminal 2 saw 18.5 million passengers pass through its doors. It currently has the capacity to handle 20 million, with 60 check-in desks, 66 self-service check-in kiosks and 60 bag drop facilities. Terminal 2A has 12 boarding gates, while Terminal 2B has 14.

Connecting to other terminals 

Heathrow has four operating terminals: Terminal 2, Terminal 3, Terminal 4 and Terminal 5. Terminal 2 is the base for the Star Alliance airlines and China Airlines, China Eastern and several non-aligned airlines.

You can walk between Terminals 2 and 3 via a pedestrian underpass in around 10 minutes.

To reach Terminals 4 and 5, you can travel for free on London Underground services within the airport. You will need to use a Transport for London Oyster Card or a contactless card to activate the ticket gates, but you will not be charged.

You can also use the Heathrow Express and Elizabeth Line trains free of charge within the airport; tickets can be obtained from the ticket machines within the station.

Allow around 20 minutes to travel between Terminal 2 and Terminal 4 or 5.

Always check which terminal you are flying from with your airline or travel agent before making any travel or parking arrangements.

Book Heathrow airport hotels and parking

Check-in

The check-in area in Terminal 2 is on level 5. Overhead screens advise the zone for your airline and the bag drop area. There are self-service check-in kiosks available for all airlines and assistance is on hand if you need help printing your boarding pass.

You should arrive at Terminal 2 three hours before departure for long-haul international flights and two hours before European and domestic flights. Gate numbers are announced approximately 45 minutes prior to departure.

You can save time by checking in online before you come to the airport, or by using one of the self-service check-in kiosks and bag drop zones at the airport. Most airlines let you check in online around 24 hours prior to departure.

Main travel connections

By car

If you are travelling by car along the M4, exit the M4 at Junction 4 and follow the signs to Terminal 2. If you are travelling via the M25, exit at Junction 15 and follow the signs.

By coach or bus

The main coach and bus station is located between Terminals 2 and 3, right above the London Underground station. You can access Terminal 2 by a walkway below the station.

Several coach companies offer services to and from Heathrow, as follows:

National Express with free WiFi on board, leather reclining seats and air conditioning.

Megabus with free WiFi, charging points, extra leg room and toilets on board.

RailAir connects Heathrow Terminal 2 with Guildford, Reading and Woking railway stations.

The Airline (Oxford Bus Company) operates 24 hours between Heathrow and Oxford and also serves Gatwick and High Wycombe.

Most local buses into London are run by Transport for London. Payment is by Oyster Card, Visitor Oyster Card, Day Travelcard or contactless card.

By rail

Terminal 2 shares its London Underground station with neighbouring Terminal 3; you can access Terminal 2 from the station by a pedestrian subway. Heathrow Central station, for the Heathrow Express and Elizabeth Line, lies below the London Underground platforms and is also accessible by a pedestrian walkway.

There are several ways of getting to and from Heathrow Terminal 2 by rail.

The Heathrow Express links Heathrow Central directly with Paddington Station in central London; departures are every 15 minutes and journey time is approximately 15 minutes.

The Elizabeth Line, which opened in 2022, links Heathrow Central with several stops in west London and even more in central London. Journey time from Paddington is approximately 35 minutes.

The London Underground Piccadilly Line runs between central London and Heathrow; Terminal 2 is in Travelcard Zone 6 and the journey time is approximately 50 minutes.

Drop-off zones

You can drop passengers off at the Terminal 2 and 3 Long Stay car park, where parking up to 30 minutes is free of charge. Passengers then take the free shuttle bus to the terminal.

Pay drop-off

The pay-for drop-off zone is located right outside the entrance to Terminal 2 and costs £5.00 each time you enter. There are no entry barriers; your vehicle’s registration number will be picked up by the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and payment can be made online or by telephone: 0330 008 5600.

You can pay for a single drop-off or pre-pay for multiple drop-offs.

Failure to pay will result in a Parking Charge Notice (PCN) of £80.00, which is reduced to £40.00 if paid within 14 days.

Exemptions are in place for Blue Badge holders, and you can apply online for a Blue Badge discount.

It is not permitted to use the drop-off zone for picking up passengers. For pick up, use the Short Stay car park.

Short Stay car park charges

The Short Stay car park at Heathrow Terminal 2 offers convenient, secure parking just a few minutes’ walk from the terminal entrance. The Short Stay car park is the best place to park if you are picking up incoming passengers at Terminal 2 and there is no need to book; you can turn up and pay on the day.

Height restrictions

Terminal 2 Short Stay car park has a height restriction of 2.05m (6ft 9in). There is, however, a designated area for over-height vehicles up to 3.0m; the minimum charge is £15.30 for up to two hours.

Alternatively, select from one of many other airport parking options for Terminal 2.

Fast Track security lane

Heathrow’s fast-track service for security is currently closed for online bookings. Check with your airline if your ticket includes a fast-track service they or their partners provide.

Special assistance and disabled facilities

Special Assistance

Pre-book special assistance with your airline, tour operator or travel agent at least 48 hours prior to travel and you need to let them know if you intend to take your own mobility devices, such as a wheelchair or scooter.

If you have booked assistance, you should receive check-in instructions with your booking. As a rule, however, plan to arrive at the airport three hours prior to your scheduled flight departure.

Once at the airport, you’ll find help points in the airport car parks, rail and bus stations, and the forecourt of Terminal 2. Use these help points to request assistance to the terminal buildings. You can also call 020 8757 2700 to arrange help from your vehicle or drop-off location.

Within the Terminal 2 building, you’ll find the special assistance area on the departure level, behind Zone C, near the entrance to security. Once through security, the airside special assistance point is next to the children’s play area and B gates.

Disabled parking

There are Blue Badge spaces in the Terminal 2 Short Stay and Long Stay car parks. The Short Stay car park is located close to the access route to the terminal. The Long Stay car park, they are nearby the shuttle bus stop or the car park office.

Alternatively, select from a range of Meet & Greet parking services, including evParkGiant, which will charge your electric vehicle for you while you are away.

Note that the roads around Heathrow do not operate the Blue Badge scheme and any unattended vehicles will be towed away.

Dedicated seating

You’ll find dedicated seating within the special assistance areas before and after security. Before security this is on the departure level, near to Zone C; after security, follow the signs to the B gates.

There is also reserved seating within the general seating areas in Terminal 2. These are marked by signs and generally offer:

  • low-level flight information screens
  • an induction loop
  • arms on both sides of seats
  • space for wheelchair users

Toilets

Most toilet facilities in Terminal 2 include a unisex, wheelchair-accessible toilet. Some of these are located within the ladies’ and men’s toilets.

Changing Places

There is Changing Places facility after security on the departures level, opposite Gate B47, and also on the arrivals level, opposite Gate 18.

Quiet area

Although there is currently no dedicated quiet room at Terminal 2, if your flight departs from a B gate then you’ll find the B gates are generally much quieter than the main departures hall in Terminal 2A. If your flight departs from an A gate, then head towards the Special Assistance area and you will usually find a quiet space.

Hidden disabilities

Sunflower lanyards are available at the assistance desk in the check-in area on level 5, behind Zone C. The sunflower lanyard is a discreet way for airport staff to recognise people with hidden disabilities, who may need additional support while in the airport.

Family facilities

Heathrow Terminal 2 provides an array of family-friendly facilities including a play area, baby-change rooms and a click-and-collect baby milk service.

Security

When travelling through Heathrow security with an infant, you are allowed to take enough baby food, sterilised water, prepared baby milk and expressed breast milk (up to two litres) for your journey. Expressed breast milk may also be taken through security even if you are travelling without your infant. Expressed milk must not be frozen and must be carried in hand luggage. Any additional liquids must be packed in checked-in luggage.

Baby changing

You’ll find baby-changing facilities before and after security in all Heathrow terminals, mostly next to the toilets. Just look for the Babycare symbol.

Click-and-collect baby milk

Heathrow offers a reserve and collect service for baby milk and baby food products, which means you can order baby products in advance to collect from the Boots store after you have passed through security.

Pushchairs

If you are travelling with a pushchair, you can usually take it right up to the gate when you board your flight. Please check in advance with your airline. 

Play areas

Terminal 2’s Soft Play Area is located near the entrance to B gates. This has been designed for children up to nine years and all children must be accompanied by an adult. They will need to wear socks.

Opening times: 06:00 – 21:00 daily.

Business facilities

Business travellers will find a variety of facilities in Terminal 2 including a Plaza Premium Lounge and Regus meeting rooms.

Plaza Premium Lounge

A spacious, peaceful environment away from the crowds, with private resting suites, wellness spa and massage services. Enjoy complimentary food and beverages, unlimited WiFi and charging ports. Maximum stay is three hours.

Chapel

There is a multi-faith prayer room in the departures area of Terminal 2 near to Gate A21. This room is designed to offer a quiet retreat for prayer and meditation and is open 24 hours a day to people of all faiths.

In addition, St George’s Chapel and Garden of Remembrance is open for private prayer Monday to Friday 11:00 – 13:00. Follow the signs from Heathrow’s Central Bus Station; it’s a walk of around 200 metres.

Food and drink

There is no need to go hungry or thirsty at any time of day in Terminal 2. Grab a coffee-to-go or sit down for oysters and bubbles; from light bites to dine-in restaurants, you’ll find a wide range of food and drinks from around the world both before and after security.

Smoking areas

Internet access

Free WiFi is available throughout Terminal 2, and it is certified as “Friendly WiFi”, which means it is safe for children to use.

On your device, choose _Heathrow Wi-Fi and follow the on-screen instructions. Once registered, you'll receive free WiFi for the duration of your stay at the airport. If you need help accessing or using Heathrow WiFi, you can call Customer Care on 0808 189 1365.

Luggage trolleys

Luggage trolleys are available in the terminal building, airport car parks, bus/coach station and rail/underground station. They are free of charge. Trolleys from the baggage claim area can be taken to car parks, the bus station or rail station access points. Note that trolleys cannot be taken through security and are not permitted in the departures area.

Luggage lockers

You can store your luggage with Left Baggage, who you’ll find in the arrivals area of the terminal. Baggage delivery and bag-wrapping services are also available. Luggage can be stored for a few hours or a few days.

Currency exchange

Currency exchange at Heathrow Terminal 2 is provided by Travelex. You can pre-order your currency and collect from the Travelex store on the day. No commission or click-and-collect fees are charged on online orders.

There are also ATMs in the terminal that offer withdrawals of certain different currencies.

Pharmacies

Well Pharmacy

Located inside WH Smith in the departures hall after security, Well Pharmacy has a consultation room and pharmacist on hand for travel advice and support.

Boots

There are three Boots stores in Terminal 2. Baby milk and baby food products can be pre-ordered and ready for collection after you have passed through security.
