Gatwick South Terminal parking prices are not fixed. They fluctuate with availability, like most airfares. One way to benefit from significant savings, therefore, is to book in advance.

Our data research shows that if you make a Gatwick South parking booking with APH six months prior to your flight departure, you could cut more than 33 per cent off the price you pay, compared with making a reservation just one week prior to departure. In cash terms, this means a week’s parking could be £69.44 if booked six months in advance or £105.12 if booked within a week of departure.

Parking types at Gatwick Airport

Here is all you need to know about finding the best Gatwick Airport South Terminal parking for your requirements.

On-airport parking: How it works

Gatwick South Terminal has both Long Stay and Short Stay car parks, which are located within the airport perimeter.

For short trips away, the Short Stay car park is right next to the terminal. You simply drive to the South Terminal and follow the signs to the Short Stay multi-storey car park. Take a ticket at the entry barrier, find a space to park, unload your bags and walk across to check-in. You keep your keys with you and remember to keep the car park ticket safe. When you return from your travels, walk back to the car park, use your ticket to pay at one of the payment machines, and collect your car.

On airport parking process

Best for: those who prioritise time over cost.

The Long Stay car park for Gatwick South Terminal operates in a similar way to the Short Stay, except with a shuttle transfer from the car park to the terminal. Once you arrive at the airport simply follow the signs to the Long Stay car park, take a ticket at the entry barrier and park your car. There are regular shuttle bus services to the terminal, which take 7-12 minutes. When you return from your travels, take the Long Stay shuttle bus back to the car park, pay at the ticket machine, and collect your car.

The Short Stay and Long Stay parking at Gatwick South both operate on a pay-by-ticket basis and do not require pre-booking. If you prefer to have a confirmed booking – or are looking for the best value-for-money – then consider off-airport parking options, such as APH Self Park, where you still get to keep your keys with you, or APH Park & Ride. It is also worth comparing on-airport parking prices with a Meet & Greet service, such as APH Meet & Greet Forecourt, where you drive directly to the terminal and leave your car with an approved driver, who will park it in a secure compound for the duration of your trip.

Off-airport: How it works

Follow the directions to the car park. Park your car and take a short shuttle bus transfer to the terminal. Transfers operate 24 hours a day and drop you right outside the terminal doors.

If you choose a Self Park option, such as APH Self Park, you park your car in an available space, keep your keys and take the free bus transfer to the South Terminal.

If you book a Park & Ride option, such as APH Park & Ride or Airparks Park & Ride, you park your car in an arrivals bay and leave your keys at Reception. Your car will be parked for you, while you take the free bus transfer to the South Terminal.

Gatwick Airport parking process

Best for: Those looking for the cheapest parking at Gatwick South, without compromising on safety and security.

Meet and Greet parking: How it works

Meet & Greet parking allows you to drive straight to the South Terminal, just as you would for the Short Stay car park, where you leave your car with the Meet & Greet operator. While you walk in to check in, your car will be driven to a secure parking facility for the duration of your trip and brought back to the terminal for you upon your return.

Meet and greet parking process

Booking your Meet & Greet parking at Gatwick South with APH means you can be sure your Meet & Greet service is being provided by an approved operator. All our Meet & Greet partners, as well as our own APH Meet & Greet Forecourt service, are listed on Gatwick Airport’s Approved Operators Scheme. In addition, all the car parking compounds used by our Meet & Greet partners hold the Park Mark Safer Parking Award.

Best for: Families with young children or those travelling with bulky luggage or restricted mobility.

Combine your parking booking with a relaxing overnight stay at the airport, or close to the airport, before your trip. A hotel and parking package is the perfect solution for those with some distance to travel to the airport, or for those with an early flight departure.

Gatwick Airport South Terminal Guide

History of Gatwick Airport South Terminal

Gatwick’s South Terminal dates back to 1958, when the modern-day airport was opened by Queen Elizabeth II. The original terminal building, The Beehive, was built for the old aerodrome in 1936 and still exists today, a little to the south of the current airport. The Beehive was connected up to nearby Tinsley Green railway station by a subway, and Tinsley Green was renamed Gatwick Airport station.

The current railway station at Gatwick is on the site of the old Gatwick Racecourse station, which opened in 1891 for race days and closed in 1940 due to the war, never to re-open afterwards. The racecourse itself was on land that is that is now part of the airport – in the north east corner.

In 1963, Gatwick’s South Terminal took over all charter flights from Heathrow and in 1970, the runway was extended to allow jet aircraft to fly to the USA. In 1973, it was extended again to enable non-stop flights to the US west coast.

Further growth in passenger numbers meant a second terminal was required and construction work began on the North Terminal in 1983, while a new control tower – at the time the tallest in the UK – opened in 1984, just in time for the first Concorde flights to start taking off in 1985. By 1987, Gatwick’s South Terminal had overtaken New York’s JFK airport to become the world’s second busiest – some of the famous faces it has greeted over the years include JFK himself, back in June 1963.

Gatwick’s South Terminal has benefited from major renovations over recent years, including an extension in 2000, a further extension to the baggage reclaim area in 2005 and a new £186 million Pier 1 facility in 2016, which came with a new baggage system, bag storage area, five new aircraft stands and a new lounge area.

Connecting to other terminals

Gatwick’s two terminals are just under a mile apart. They are connected by a monorail called the inter-terminal shuttle. The journey time between the two terminals is two minutes.

If you are in the North Terminal just follow the signs to the South Terminal.

Check-in areas

Check-in is located on level 2, which is accessed by lifts and escalators and includes self-service check-in kiosks.

If you have already checked in online, then look for the bag drop point for your airline. Or, if you are travelling light with just carry-on luggage, you can skip the check-in area altogether and head straight for Departures, where you will proceed through the security area to the departures lounge.

For international flights, check-in normally opens three hours prior to departure.

For domestic flights, check-in normally opens two hours prior to departure.

Always check your travel documents in advance for specific check-in information for your airline.

Self-service check-in

Some airlines offer self-service check-in, which means you can avoid the check-in queues. The self-service check-in kiosks are located near the standard check-in desks. Just follow the instructions on the screen to choose seats and print boarding passes and luggage labels. Attach the luggage labels to the bags you want to check in and take them to the nearby bag drop-off point. The self-service check-in process should only take a couple of minutes.

Online check-in

Many airlines offer online check-in either 24 hours in advance of travel (or several weeks ahead). With online check-in, you can either have an electronic boarding pass on your device, or print your boarding pass off at home before you travel. If you have checked in some luggage, then you just need to drop those bags and suitcases at the bag drop-off in the check-in area when you arrive at the airport.

Note there are no flight calls at Gatwick South Terminal, so make sure you keep an eye on the departure screens for up-to-date boarding information for your flight. Boarding is usually around 45 minutes prior to departure.

Main travel connections

By car

Lying 28 miles south of London, Gatwick South Terminal is just a couple of minutes’ drive from Junction 9 of the M23, which itself is a 10-minute drive southbound from Junction 7 of the M25. From the south, Brighton is 27 miles via the A23/M23.

Gatwick South Terminal Postcode: RH6 0NP.

With easy access to the rest of the UK via the national motorway network, driving to and from Gatwick South Terminal is a good option. There are various airport parking deals to suit all budgets and requirements and there’s a 24-hour filling station if you need to top up on arrival or when you return from your trip away.

By coach or bus

National Express offers services to Gatwick from multiple destinations across the UK. Buy tickets online or, if flying into Gatwick, you can purchase tickets at the National Express desk in the South Terminal. There is a National Express desk in the arrivals hall and also one down on the lower level, near to the coach stops.

Coaches depart from the South Terminal lower forecourt area, which is accessible by escalators, lifts and ramps from the main terminal. Virtually all National Express coaches are wheelchair accessible. The National Express coach stops are numbered one to five.

In addition to National Express services, The Airline (Oxford Bus Company) runs regular services between Oxford, Heathrow and Gatwick.

Local buses are mostly run by Metrobus and arrive at and depart from stops on the A23.

By rail

Gatwick was the first airport in the world to be linked to a national rail network when it opened in 1958. The railway station is at the South Terminal and is easily accessible and well signposted.

Gatwick Express offers a non-stop 30-minute service from/to London Victoria.

There are also slower but cheaper services to/from London operated by Southern and Thameslink, who will also take you south to Brighton, Eastbourne and beyond.

Thameslink also crosses London via Blackfriars and St Pancras to Luton Airport Parkway and Bedford, avoiding the need to switch stations in London.

There is also an hourly GWR service from Gatwick to Reading via Redhill, Reigate and Guildford.

Tickets can be bought online or at the station or you can use a contactless or Oyster card at the ticket gates.

Drop-off zones

Free drop-off

You can drop off passengers free of charge at the South Terminal Long Stay car park.

As you approach the airport, take the exit off the roundabout signposted South Terminal and follow the signs to the Long Stay car park. Take a ticket at the entry barrier and find a parking bay. Those who are flying then take the free shuttle bus to the airport terminal, which takes around five minutes. The shuttle buses run every 10-12 minutes, so make sure you factor in enough time to reach check-in and clear security. Boarding usually closes at least 45 minutes prior to departure.

To exit the car park, insert the ticket where indicated at the exit barrier; no charge is payable if you have stayed less than two hours.

The South Terminal Long Stay car park can also be used for free pick-up, so long as the vehicle is parked for under two hours. Passengers simply take the shuttle bus from the terminal to the car park to meet their driver.

Pay drop-off

The pay-for drop-off zone is the most convenient way to drop off passengers at the South Terminal. Located on the lower-level forecourt area right outside the terminal building, the drop-off zone is clearly signposted as you enter the airport.

When you enter the zone, number plate recognition cameras will register your vehicle, and again when you exit the zone. You must pay the charge online by midnight the following day, or you will receive a parking charge notice (PCN) for £100.00.

Exemptions are in place for Blue Badge holders, who receive up to 30 minutes free of charge in the drop-off zone if they register their vehicle in advance. There is also a local residents’ scheme for commuters who are regularly dropped off at Gatwick South Terminal for the railway station.

South Terminal drop-off fees:

  • £5.00 for the first 10 minutes
  • £1.00 for each additional minute, up to 20 minutes
  • maximum charge: £25.00
  • maximum length of stay: 30 minutes

If you are picking up family and friends flying into Gatwick South Terminal, use the Short Stay car park rather than the drop-off zone.

Short Stay car park charges

The Short Stay car park at Gatwick South Terminal offers convenient, secure parking just a few minutes’ walk from the terminal entrance and you can turn up and pay on the day.

All car park levels are fully accessible for those with mobility restrictions. For same-level access, the Premium Short Stay area is on level 2 of car park 3.

Once you enter the South Terminal off the roundabout, just follow the signs to the Short Stay car park. At the entrance barrier, take a ticket and find a parking bay. When you return to the car park, use the pay machines near to the lifts to pay for your parking.

Fast-track lanes

Premium Security

Beat the queues at security and join the Premium Security fast-track lane. All adult passengers can book Premium Security from £5.00 per person. Places are limited to just 50 per hour so it is a good idea to book in advance. It is recommended to book a time approximately two hours prior to your scheduled flight departure.

Note prices can vary according to availability and opening times are 04:00 to 20:00. If you turn up and pay on the day, the cost is £7.00 per adult and places are subject to availability.

Premium Passport Control

On arriving at Gatwick South Terminal, you can speed your way through passport control with Premium Passport Control, which gives you access to a dedicated fast-track lane from £9.99 per person. Book in advance to be sure of a spot; places are limited to 50 per hour and you can book up to four hours prior to landing.

Premium Passport Control is open from 06:00 to 24:00 except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Special assistance and disabled facilities

Special Assistance

Gatwick South Terminal has a dedicated special assistance team on hand to help those who need it through the airport. You should book special assistance with your airline or travel agent preferably at the time of booking your flight, or at least 48 hours in advance, so the airport team can be ready to help when you arrive.

Once at the airport, all special assistance up to when you board the aircraft is provided by Wilson James. Help points are located in the Short Stay car park if you require assistance from your vehicle into the terminal building. Alternatively, make yourself known to the special assistance desk, which is clearly signposted, once in the building.

Disabled parking

Blue Badge bays are available in the South Terminal Short Stay and Long Stay car parks. The Premium Short Stay area on level 2 of car park 3 offers same-level access to the terminal buildings. The Long Stay car park requires a bus transfer to the terminal; the transfer bus stops at the terminal on the same level as the entrance.

Alternatively, the APH Park and Ride car park provides assistance where required – there is a button to press at the entrance gate – and the APH shuttle buses to/from the terminal are wheelchair friendly. You can also book a Meet & Greet parking service, which allows you to drive directly to the terminal.

Dedicated seating

The dedicated seating areas are clearly marked by special assistance signs and are located in the general seating areas of the terminal.

Accessible Toilets

Accessible toilets are available near most toilet blocks in the South Terminal and are usually unisex.

Changing Places

There is a small adult Changing Places facility on the upper level of the South Terminal departures hall, with an adjustable bed and wash basin. There is another Changing Places facility on the arrivals route, which includes an adjustable bed, hoist, flexible wash basin and full shower facilities. To access this larger facility, just go to the special assistance desk in the departures lounge and they will be able to escort you there.

Eagle hoists

Eagle hoists for boarding the aircraft can be arranged but must be booked at least 24 hours in advance of travel, by emailing lgweaglehoist@wilsonjames.co.uk with:

  • passenger name and contact details
  • date of travel, flight number and departure time
  • height and approximate weight of the passenger
  • if you have used the service before

Hidden disabilities

In 2016, Gatwick Airport was the first to recognise the needs of travellers with autism and helped develop the hidden disabilities symbol – a sunflower. The sunflower lanyard can be used to identify someone who may need support, help, or just a little more time in shops, transport, or public spaces and has since been adopted by airports and businesses throughout the world.

Sunflower lanyards are available to everyone at the special assistance reception desks, both before and after security. You can get more information by emailing HiddenDisability@gatwickairport.com.

Gatwick Airport also offers an autism-friendly guide to travelling through the terminals.

Family facilities

Gatwick South Terminal provides an array of practical facilities to help families through the airport, including fast-track lanes, baby-change rooms and play areas.

Security and assisted lanes

If you are travelling with young children, there is a dedicated fast-track lane to security for families and passengers with special assistance. Just look for the sign to the right of the main entrance to security.

Note that you can take more than 100ml of baby milk and sterilised water through security, as required for the length of your journey. Any specific drinks required for children as part of dietary needs require an accompanying letter from their GP.

Baby changing

You’ll find specially equipped rooms in the South Terminal for feeding and baby changing. These are identifiable by the Babycare symbol and are located in the check-in area, departures hall, en route to the gates, in the transfer area and in arrivals after passport control. There are also fold-down tables provided in some male and female toilets.

Pushchairs

Pushchairs and buggies can be taken right up to the gate, just before you board your flight. When flying into Gatwick, your pushchair will be in the baggage hall for you to collect with the rest of your luggage.

Play areas

Once you have passed through security and entered the departures hall, you’ll find a special kids’ zone on the upper level, opposite the InMotion store. The kids’ zone has been designed and created for children to play and interact with fun educational elements. It is free of charge.
