In 2004, 20,000 people voted Luton the worst place to live. A little harsh perhaps, with the magnificent Luton Hoo on the doorstep. It is just as well the locals are first to laugh. They have nicknamed the £40 million aluminium and glass airport terminal "the Tinshed".
Luton Airport also stays fresh in many minds due to a 70s Campari advert. Asked if she had "truly wafted in from Paradise", Lorraine Chase replied "Nah, from Luton Airport".
Luton Airport's fortunes have fluctuated thanks to charter companies either going bankrupt or moving their operations, like Ryanair, to other airports. However, business is once more on the rise, and easyjet has now made Luton Airport its commercial hub.
In 2008, passenger figures increased to over 10 million pushing Luton up the airport league to fifth place. Passengers are serviced by eight low-cost carriers including easyjet, flybe, ryanair and wizz.
Previously called Luton International Airport, London Luton Airport is about 30 miles to the north-west of Central London, in Bedfordshire. It is easily found at junction 10 on the M1.
