Off-airport parking: how it works

This is generally the most cost-effective parking for Birmingham Airport. The off-airport car parks at Birmingham Airport are also easy to access. The process is straightforward.

Follow the directions to the car park. Unload your bags and take one of the regular shuttle bus transfers to the terminal. The transfer to the airport takes around 15 minutes and is complimentary. If you have booked a Park & Ride, your car will be parked for you while you head to check-in, either on-site in the car park or at a nearby secure parking facility, so you need to leave your keys at the car park Reception. Your car will be returned to the Reception area for you to collect at the end of your trip.

Birmingham Airport Guide

History of Birmingham Airport

The first flights took off from Birmingham “Elmdon” Airport in 1939, a few months before the breakout of the second world war. After serving as an Elementary Flying School, Fleet Air Arm, testing and delivery base for Stirling and Lancaster bombers, it returned to civilian duties in 1946, with two new hard surface runways.

1949 saw the start of scheduled services to Paris, by British European Airways, to be followed by services to Zurich, Düsseldorf, Palma, Amsterdam and Barcelona between 1955 and 1960.

In 1961, an extension to the terminal was opened as the International Building, and an extension to the main runway that was added between 1967 and 1970 heralded the arrival of turboprops and jet aircraft. By the early 1970s, a million passengers were passing through the airport, which now offered VC10 services to New York.

A new terminal catering for up to three million passengers was opened in 1984 and the Eurohub – the first terminal in the world to combine domestic and international passengers¬ – came into action in 1991. By 2000, the airport was handling over 7.5 million passengers a year and a new two-storey arrivals concourse was constructed to link the two terminals.

In 2014, an extension to the runway meant Birmingham could now offer long-haul flights to the west coast of the USA, China and South Africa.

Terminals

Birmingham operates as a single terminal airport, with 115 check-in desks, 27 self-service kiosks and 47 aircraft stands, with 20 of these fitted with air bridges.

The terminal has 11,000 square metres of commercial space, including a 20,000- square-metre walk-through Duty-Free store.

The arrivals hall is on the ground floor, along with the check-in desks, and the departures hall is on the first floor after security. Facilities at the terminal include duty-free shopping, restaurants, bars and lounges, and special assistance services. There is a range of airport parking options, as well as airport hotels for overnight stays and combined parking and hotel packages.

Around 50 airlines fly in and out of Birmingham, including global flag carriers Emirates, Turkish Airlines, Air India, KLM, Swiss, SAS, Brussels Airline, Air France and Lufthansa.

Check-in

The check-in area at Birmingham Airport is on the ground floor of the terminal building. There are self-service check-in kiosks as well as manned check-in desks. If you have already checked in online, then you simply need to drop your bags at the bag drop-off point. Or, if you are travelling light with just carry-on luggage, then you can skip the check-in area altogether and head straight upstairs to security.

- For international flights, check-in normally opens four hours prior to departure, and you are advised to check in no later than three hours prior.
- For European flights, check-in normally opens two to three hours prior to departure, and you are advised to check in no later than two hours prior.
- For domestic flights, you are advised to check in no later than 90 minutes prior to departure.
- Always check your travel documents in advance for check-in information.
- Self-service check-in kiosks are available for some airlines but not all; please check with your airline directly, or with your travel agent.
 - Airline desks and airline handling agent desks are all on the ground floor of the check-in hall.
