Planning Ahead

I saw an advert recently for a small airline that suggested the best way to go on holiday was just to shove a few clothes in to a suitcase and “get out of here.”
Well, whilst one might sympathise with the desire to just shove some clothes in to and “just get out of here” the reality of such an idea is far from ideal. After all, the sensible holidaymaker knows that the best way to ensure that you have a successful holiday is to ensure that you plan everything as well as you can, beforehand.
There are the little basics like ensuring that you leave the central heating on when you go on a winter break. And making sure that you cancel newspaper and milk delivery before you depart for your 14 day holiday in the vacation destination of your choice. (And more on that destination, later.)
And you should also ask at your local Royal Mail sorting office to arrange to have your mail temporarily held at the sorting office until you return from holiday. You can also ask a neighbour or family friend to sort out watering house plants and garden plants, too, and to check to ensure that your house is safe throughout your holiday.
Incidentally, if you haven't got a burglar alarm, you should...

Dont risk your neck to save a penny

Did you know that according to recent claims, very nearly one quarter of UK holidaymakers are considering saving money this year by not bothering to book travel insurance?
Extreme sport holidays are becoming all the rage, so the idea that there are people even considering saving money by not booking holiday or travel insurance tends to bring experts out in a cold sweat.
The traditional adrenaline fuelled holidays like mountain walking or even a spot of light mountaineering are as popular as ever, but walking on glaciers, visiting volcanoes, bungee jumping, paragliding, heli-sking and more are becoming increasing popular. And the last thing you want to do is to attempt anything adventurous without the benefit of adequate holiday insurance. You don't want to think about the cost of hiring a private air ambulance from the nearest airport to the mountain that you fell off, not to mention the cost of the ambulance to take you to the airport.
And the best reason not to think about holiday insurance? Because you have already had it all taken care of well before you leave for your exotic and adventurous holiday. And before you think: “Oh, that doesn't concern me! I am only going to read my book on the...

Books for your Suitcase

For some of us, there is nothing like a deckchair by the poolside, a long, cool drink and a plentiful supply of reading material to while away the time as we relax safe in the knowledge that the only thing that matters on our holiday is our quality time.
So what books are available for us to read?
Life Starts Now, by Maria Lawson
Maria Lawson rose to fame on The X Factor four years ago in 2005, but she had already enjoyed considerable success as a singer/songwriter before The X Factor. She3 had secured a recording and publishing contract through her own efforts and was determined to really break into the music industry.
Life Starts Now follows Maria’s journey from the position of a hopeful unknown, through the auditions and all the through to her appearance on the programme itself. Maria takes the reader behind the scenes to find out what really happens as the show is put together.
Her autobiography also documents her early life and reveals exactly why this ambitious young girl from a rather ordinary and somewhat humble background was able to fulfil her dream of TV stardom and recording industry success.
It's an honest and rather heart-warming account and Maria explains how she...

Flying in to fear

There are many people whose dream holiday can be spoilt by the fact that they do not, in particular, like travelling. Or, more particularly, they do not like flying. And this fear of flying can be a major concern. Some people are OK with everything about flying, except for the landing or the take off. Others just don't like the bit in between, or hate all of it from taxiing toward the take-off to taxiing away from the landing!
Some people think they may just have to grin and bear it, others self-medicate with alcohol (often with disastrous consequences) or some people just never fly at all. Either way, the result can be spoilt or even totally ruined holidays, with perhaps the sufferer not going away on holiday at all, which can spoil things for the rest of the family or for friends.
How can people overcome a fear of flying?
Virgin offer a service at http://flyingwithoutfear.info which helps people who are phobic about flying to attempt to overcome their fear of flying. There are a number of locations throughout the UK where this Flying Without Fear service is offered, Including locations near Gatwick Airport, Luton Airport and Manchester Airport.
Swine Flu Dont let it ruin your holiday

Whilst swine flu can be serious in people who are already vulnerable (elderly or young children or those already poorly) and whilst a pandemic sounds pretty serious, a pandemic might not be as bad as it sounds. After all, a pandemic just means that a disease is common throughout a region, country or continent.
So, what happens when you get swine flu? You feel poorly, with a fever. You also get a sore throat, you feel tired, you might be off your food, sneeze somewhat and develop a cough. (Actually, that sounds pretty much like all bugs that we seem prone to!)
So, basically, not much happens to you. So is it all a media hype? Well, not exactly. But it does remind one of the bird flu scare of a couple of years back. After all, according to WHO figures, on 5 May 21 countries reported 1490 cases of bird flu infection. Only 1490 cases worldwide? Perhaps that helps put the whole matter into perspective.
What should you do? You don't need to put your holiday plans on hold, but try to avoid any country that has a high swine flu incident rate. Such as Mexico, for example.
If you want to be careful, take a couple of face masks with you. And buy some waterless hand wash. There are some that are alcohol free....

Find out Whats happening

When you are going on holiday, are you the kind of person who does it on a wing and a prayer? Just arriving at your hotel and asking the staff there if there are any cultural or artistic events happening within the area that you are holidaying in?
Or are you more like the traditional image of the Boy Scout? Is your motto "Be Prepared?" By which I mean, do you plan ahead? Before you go on holiday, do you check out what is happening in the area you will holiday in? Or perhaps you choose an event that you would be interested in, such as a jazz festival, art festival, folk music event, beer festival, motor show, fashion show, carnival or what have you? And build your holiday around that event or events?
You can check out the tour guides or look at online sites. Though there is a word of caution required, here. It is alleged that a certain well-known travel guide publisher has –inadvertently- published travel guides written by an author who had not, actually, bothered to visit the countries that he was writing the travel guides on!
One good source of information is the tourism sections of embassies, consulates and high commissions. They will be able to tell you which events are on specific to...

Make sure your kids are safe

Tombstoning (leaping from cliffs into the sea) is a very popular pursuit. It can also have very deadly consequences.
It is a worldwide phenomena, and you must ensure that after you park your car up at Birmingham, London Heathrow or Manchester, you do not leave your common-sense locked up with it.
Government advice is to think before you jump:
* be aware of the depth of the water - remember tides go in and out very quickly - it may start off deep enough but can quickly become shallower
* be aware of hazards in the water - rocks, groynes or debris under the sea may not be visible through the surface
* never jump from any object into the sea while under the influence of alcohol or peer pressure
* consider the risk to others - young children may be easily influenced by the behaviour they witness

Dont Smuggle Food

We might think that smuggling some food back from our holiday is not a crime. But no matter what we might think about the matter, it is a crime and a crime that Customs takes very seriously indeed. What foodstuffs can you take out of the UK? What foodstuffs can you bring back? The government has launched a new online service that will help tell you.
People travelling outside the EU this summer can easily find out which foods they can, or can't, bring back in to the UK with them. The government has launched a new new Food Widget, that’s a special online food travel checker available from government webservice, Directgov.
Travellers can use the Food Widget on the Directgov website as an online quick check to see examples of three foods which you can legally bring back with them from outside the EU. It also contains examples of three foods you can't bring back with you. You can then use the service to click through to a much more comprehensive and fuller list of which food items are and aren't allowed.
The government points out that diseases such as Foot and Mouth Disease and Bird Flu could, in theory, be brought into the UK via food products (particularly those that are containing meat or milk),...

Plan your holiday with care

With last summer’s travel industry failures that left thousands stranded and many others out of pocket, you might like to ensure that your holiday runs as smoothly as possible.
Always check that the deal stands up. If it looks too good to be true, then it might be.
Check that they have the right registrations. That they are ATOL, ABTA or AITO registered. Don’t just check that they have the logos on their brochures, websites or in their shops. Check with the organisations concerned that they really are members in good standing, if you feel you need to.
In general terms you might be better booking a package deal. But you must always ensure that you are properly insured. APH can help sort out insurance. Just check out the website or give them a call if you need any further help.
Consumer Direct offers the following advice:
* if you are booking a package holiday - usually means a holiday consistingof two or more pre-arranged elements (for example flight and accommodation) - check that the travel operator has a bonding scheme or some other form of protection such as those offered by ATOL, ABTA or AITO. These will usually give you financial protection and arrange to get you home if the...

Make it a holiday to interest

There are many reasons why people go on holiday. Relaxation, seeing new sights, new faces, enjoying new sensations. Some people, however, want something a little different. They want to pursue their hobby but in a different environment.
For example, parachuting toward the rural British countryside is vastly different to parachuting toward the Nevada Desert. Sailing a dingy round the coast of Britain or sailing the same -or similar- type of boat toward the Great Barrier Reef is very different. Both are enjoyable, but seeing the Great Barrier Reef from your own boat? Wonderful!
And getting together with other people who enjoy the same leisure pursuits that you enjoy (writing, photography, cooking, painting, water skiing, abseiling, mountain climbing, etc., etc.) in an exotic and/or warm location must be an ideal holiday for the person that is really into their leisure pursuits.
How do you find out about this kind of leisure pursuit holiday? If there are any magazines that are published for your hobby, just look through the classified advert section. There you should find some adverts by people who offer the kind of holiday that you are looking for. Some hotels or guest complexes specialise in offering...

How to ensure your holiday will not be spoilt

The possibility that you will not be able to go on holiday because your travel firm has collapsed (or worse, that you become stranded hundreds or thousands of miles away from, home) is not a pleasant one. However, don't let that put you off booking your summer holiday. There are certain steps that you can take to try to ensure that, should things start to go wrong, that the situation is not as stressful as it could otherwise be.
For example, always pay for your holiday with a credit card. Not a debit card. But a credit card. Why? Because you can claim your money back from the Credit Card Company.
The recent collapse of Scottish travel firm, ScotTravel, has caused concerns. Rochelle Turner from Which? Holiday says: “With yet another tour operator collapsing and leaving holiday-makers stranded, it’s really important that people take steps to ensure they are protected should a similar incident occur in the future.
“If you pay for your flight with a credit card or book it as part of a package holiday then you shouldn’t have any problems getting your money back. The same applies for people who book through an ATOL bonded travel agent or operator. You may even be covered by...

Tips for Driving Overseas

A couple of days ago there was an article written by a major motor insurance broker. They were beseeching drivers to make absolutely certain that, should they be holidaying abroad, they must make absolutely certain that they have the right vehicle insurance. Extended and fully comprehensive, even!
They were -rightly- insistent that drivers must also have passport and driver's licence, VRDs and full breakdown cover. However, it can be argued that the above list could be ignored, with perhaps the exception of the driver's licence.
Why commence worrying about checking your insurance policy or the VRD that you last saw goodness knows when, or if you might get arrested in France for carrying the wrong colour reflective jacket in you car or pulled in Spain for having the wrong type of sticking plaster in your car's first aid kit? Why worry about having the proper insurances for your car when, for a whole lot more peace of mind, you can simply ask APH to park your car for you, instead?
Should you really feel the need to use a car whilst you are holidaying abroad, get APH to sort out a rental car for you at your destination. A drive to the South of France, for example, is tiring and could put an otherwise...

Swine Flu Tips

Swine Flu is still a concern, but don't let it put you off travelling.
By being careful, you can minimise the risk of catching or spreading this –or any other- infectious disease. One thing you can do is to buy some anti-bacterial hand gel or some of the waterless liquid hand washes. Cuticura Hand Hygiene Gel is an old favourite and fits into a pocket, bag or first aid kits. And it is available from supermarkets, chemists and other retailers. Also available is a new alcohol-free hand sanitiser, SOAPOPULAR, as well as another product Quash, which can lay claim to being the is the UK’s “first 100% natural moisturising hand sanitiser with anti ageing properties” so not only does it help kill bugs that spread diseases, it is also good for the skin, too!
If you ensure that you use soap and water and waterless sanitisers as mentioned above, you should help reduce your chances of falling ill whilst on your holiday or of spreading diseases to members of your family or other holidaymakers.
One word of caution, as alcohol is frowned on by some countries, please do ensure alcohol hand wash products are legal to be taken in to those countries and to be used there.

Recession Honeymoons

The recession has caused many people to go into a panic and rethink their honeymoon plans. Although the recession is serious, there really is no need to panic.
And there’s no need to cancel your honeymoon, either. But if you feel that the month-long South Sea Island vacation might stretch your budget until it twangs a little bit too much for comfort, rather than not going anywhere, why don’t you look at something a little closer to home.
Instead of a month on a desert isle, why not look at one or two weeks closer to home? Egypt, Malta, Gibraltar, or maybe ten days at Niagara Falls? Or New York? Walks through Central Park, carriage rides, eating in genuine New York diners and seeing the New York skyline from the Empire State Building’s Observatory, which is located 1,050 feet above the city and you can also dine there, too.
Also, check out the APH website to ensure you get a great price on your airport parking as well.

New way to obtain your visa

One thing that can cause a problem for some travellers is the organising of visas. In fact a recurring nightmare of some travellers is that they have forgotten to arrange a visa! Sadly for some people that nightmare can become a heartbreaking reality, meaning the entire loss of a holiday. To help smooth things over a little, those clever people at Virgin Atlantic have come up with a rather neat plan. Passengers with Virgin Atlantic can now sort out and arrange their travel documents at the same time as they are booking their flight tickets! (“Hurrah!” I hear you cry!)
This has become possible due to a new partnership announced recently by Virgin Atlantic. Virgin Atlantic has linked up with visa specialists CIBT, reputedly the largest worldwide provider of visa and passport services. What does this mean for passengers who fly with Virgin Atlantic? They are now perfectly able to obtain travel visas to many (if not most) nations in the world including Africa, Australia, China, and India, via the Virgin Atlantic contact centre and through their own website, Virginatlantic.com.
CIBT will provide a comprehensive range of travel document services including visas, passports and other important documents...

Cheap calls abroad and internet

At last! Cheap calls abroad and internet!
The cost of making telephone calls from your hotel room can come as a rather costly shock. But that's all set to change, according to telephone service provider TravelTalk. For they are offering a new service which will allow travellers to make calls from their hotel room for a only a fraction of the normal cost.
It's the aim of TravelTalk to offer holidaymakers and business travellers with an effective alternative to using their own mobile phones and also to earn some previously lost revenue for hotels. The TravelTalk service should cost callers from 5.99Euros for 60 minutes. A bonus is that there are no hidden costs and no set-up or on going running costs for the hotels. It's reported that under 3% hotel guests use the phones in their hotel rooms to make external telephone calls. It is thought that by the end of 2010 the system will be installed in some 60 hotels. At present only 3 are served
The system has already been installed in three hotels and Clasix forecasts it will be in 60 around Europe by the end of 2010.

If you are going to fly and the weather is snowy, there are some things that you can do. Firstly, do not panic. Really. It doesn't help and only serves to put your blood pressure up and make you and everyone else miserable.
Secondly, always make sure that you have more than enough time to get to the airport. Leave home earlier than you would normally do. In fact, as well as having your car parking arranged by APH, why not really take the strain out of your arrangements and ask APH to arrange a hotel and parking package? That way you will spend a relaxing night sleeping at an airport hotel, instead of having to wake up in the middle of the night in order to have a stressful and potentially hazardous drive through blizzards and having to negotiate an obstacle course of abandoned vehicles as the time for your flight becomes inexorably nearer.
But there are some steps you can take to make sure your journey to the airport is as safe and as pleasant as it can be in snowy or icy weather:

Ensure that your vehicle's anti-freeze is less than two years old
Make certain your battery is in good condition, with no terminal corrosion
    Have...

Vacation Stayation and now the kidcation

What on earth is a kidcation? I am glad you asked! Apparently an increasing number of families are opting for short breaks in cities to blend learning and fun. Thus kidcation. That's the findings of the Thistle Hotel chain.
The chain (which has 33 hotels in the UK) reports a substantial rise in the number of enquiries and confirmed bookings of ‘kidcations’ at its city centre hotels throughout the country. Parents, looking for a change, are aiming to treat the family to short breaks that mix learning with fun. Thistle points out that city breaks are not any longer the sole preserve of romantic couples and intellectuals.

Some families seem to have ‘traded down’ from overseas package holidays, instead they opt for cost conscious domestic breaks, with reduced spending and -often- reduced holiday periods. Thistle has designed a new family package to serve the growing interest from parents with younger children in this type of holiday. The Thistle deal is for £149 per room, and this includes bed and breakfast and dinner on one night. As part of this deal, Thistle also offers 50% off an additional room, and what's more, the under 12s can eat from the...

Worlds Top Airports

Incheon International Airport (Seoul, S Korea) was named World's Best Airport for 2009, in the World Airport Awards published by Skytrax.

Hong Kong International Airport, was pipped to 2nd place by Incheon International, with Singapore Changi Airport ranking 3rd best in the world, according to the latest passenger satisfaction rankings. Skytrax reports the final winning margins between these top 3 positions was the smallest ever known for such a large global project, at one stage it looked possible there might be a dead-heat result between these top three airports!
The World Airport Awards™ are based on the results from 8.6 million questionnaires filled out by airline passengers in 2008/9, covering over 190 airports all over the world. The takes and measures traveller experiences across 39 different airport services and product factors, from initial check-in, arrivals and transfer through to departure at the gate.

Time for a cheaper Greek holiday

Although we do not want to make a trite point, and it might be seen by some as a trifle flippant under the circumstances, but the awful financial situation in Greece (The Greek government have finally took the decision to seek help from other EU nations, including Great Britain and are introducing a new harsh tax regimen) just might see some reductions in the prices of holidays in Greece and the Greek Isles. Of course, one must watch out for the likely impact of increased taxes and the like, but it is highly probable, indeed, perhaps likely, that some hoteliers in Greece will be looking to offer some truly tempting deals to potential holidaymakers from the UK. After all, they must keep holidaymakers in their hotels, in order to pay wages, increased taxes, etc.
Of course, one would be foolish to consider investing in holiday property in Greece just at the moment, but now could be the ideal opportunity to park the car at the APH airport car park, and jet off to Greece for a bargain getaway-from-it-all Greek Islands holiday. Or perhaps you might want to check out if there are any properties available to buy, in the longer term? After all, with all the uncertainly, you never know, you might be Able to find...

Where are the Tickets

At one time, that reaction would have spelt the doom of a family holiday. Because as everyone knows, if you don’t have your tickets, you don’t go on your holiday. But that is no longer the case. At least if you book your holiday package with COSMOS and their associated Airline, Avro. For they have taken the decision to replace the traditional paper travel documents and tickets with ticketless travel. Sort of travel ‘non-documents’, if you will.
How will it work? Your travel agent will be sent a one page ‘Travel Itinerary’ to confirm all the travel and flight details. This will replace all the myriad tickets and travel documents, once deemed by the industry as absolutely essential!

The change is being introduced as a gradual process. At first it will only involve flights (both scheduled and charter) with Monarch, but other airlines will be included in the new scheme as and when this becomes possible. Apparently the decision was taken because many of the cheaper carriers and some of the scheduled flights have introduced “e-tickets” and Cosmos and Avro thought that the time had come to move over to a ticketless mode of operating,...

The Identity Fraud Communications Awareness Group offers football fans a guide on what to look out for at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. You can access it here at: www.identitytheft.org.uk
As thousands of football fans visit South Africa to holiday and watch the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the Identity Fraud Communications Awareness Group, has issued a warning about the potential tricks and scams that might target World Cup tourists.
"While news headlines have focused on the risk of violence for anyone heading to South Africa, we are urging consumers to be aware of the potential fraud scams which might give them a financial hangover when they get back," says Neil Munroe, who is the official spokesman for the IFCAG.
He added: "Unfortunately, football fans will stand out from the crowd, making them an easy target for the criminals. But with a little extra vigilance we believe people can enjoy the trip of a lifetime and avoid becoming victims of fraud.
"Especially we are urging England fans to be a bit more cautious when they are using credit cards. A little common sense goes a long way. And if it seems too good to be true, it often...

Football fans

With the South Africa World Cup 2010 now only days away, football fever is growing all over the world, and fans from all corners of the globe (if you'll pardon that expression!) are praying and hoping that their team might (sometimes against all the odds!) progress to World Cup victory.. But which nations have the most ardent, dedicated fans? You might be surprised!

Website Skyscanner has searched through its flight search data to check up on exactly which football nations are displaying the most interest in travelling to see the World Cup.Football (real football that is!) is seen as a relatively minor sport in the US, coming quite far behind American Football in terms of a fanbase. But it looks as if US football fans are the most supportive of their team. This is based on data for searches for flights to South Africa leaping by a stupendous 440% on last year’s figures for the same time of year. So it looks logical to assume most of them are making the journey across the Atlantic to South Africa to watch their National team in person.

Spain was fairly close behind with a remarkable rise of 409%, trailed closely by Brazil with a 399% jump. France come in with a 331% rise and the...

Always look on the bright side

Well, that's what the song says! I asked my wife what she felt about England's defeat by Germany, but as she is Anglo-Indian-Welsh, she merely muttered something about “Rugbi” (that's Rugby, to all of us English-speakers)! and the upshot is that I think we'll be flying a Welsh Dragon over our house, come the start of the season. As my grandmother was Welsh, I don't think that's a bad idea, really!

But what about the rest of England? I have spoken with a friend who is a travel agent of the type who not only arranges every detail of your holiday, he can order tickets (heavily discounted, of course!) for just about any event in the world. He has noticed an increase in enquiries almost as soon as the dreadful result came through. And within 60 minutes of the end of the dreadful game (dreadful coaching, dreadful playing, dreadful officials!) lowcostholidays.com, were able to report a whopping 40% increase of people looking for the perfect, low cost holiday.

Solar-powered plane

It has a massive wingspan of 63 metres, is powered by 400kg of special storage batteries charged by 12,000 high tech solar cells and has accommodation for one pilot, only. And some people believe it could play a role in aviation of the future.
It has flown higher than expected and has proven itself capable of flying not only in direct sunlight but also throughout the night, using the electrical energy harvested by the solar cells and stored in the batteries. Some people have theorised that it could continue flying indefinitely, recharging itself as it flies.
After flying throughout all of the day and then all of the following night, Solar Impulse landed the next morning at a Swiss airfield after flying through the Alps.
“This is a highly symbolic moment, flying by night using solely solar power is a stunning manifestation of the potential that clean technologies offer today to reduce the dependency of our society on fossil fuels!" said Bertrand Piccard, Initiator and President of Solar Impulse.
Added Raymond Clerc, Head of Solar Impulse flight mission: “After 17,500 hours flying commercial aircraft, for the first time I am finding myself on the side of the air controllers, in...

Items left behind

It's easy to be absent minded. But some people seem to take it to extremes. Just take a look through these items left behind in holiday villas!
Passports, travel documents, car and house keys and money. Wads of dosh secured under the bed, the luggage. Even potentially life-saving medicines are simply left behind.

One Owners Direct property owner ( www.ownersdirect.co.uk) who lets out an apartment in Mallorca said: “One of our guests left behind a ladies handbag with ALL their travel documents in, money and prescription medicines. They missed their flight as they had to return to collect it.”

But some of the items left behind in holiday accommodation are, to be quite frank, just a bit, well, bizarre?
Bizarre items left behind in holiday accommodation include a pair of Father Christmas trousers and a beard, house deeds, a false leg (HOW?!) a bongo drum and a full sized rubber face mask of George Bush. There are also a surprising number of abandoned false teeth and toupees....

Airport Parking, Hotels, plus a few bicycles

APH has never been a company to rest on its laurels. Long the champion of innovative airport parking solutions, APH has decided to begin some innovations closer to home. Due to a proactive stance by APH, its workers can now enjoy the benefits of the government innovative to encourage more people to cycle to and from work.

“At APH we have just introduced the cycle to work scheme. Basically the company pays for the bike and we pay it back over the months, plus it can save you up to 40% off the price of the bike."

“A few people here are interested and we will hopefully have a fitter and healthier work force. So far three employees have taken advantage of the scheme and its only been in place a few weeks,” explained an APH colleague.

Helping to get staff out of their cars and onto a bicycle is a noble effort. A challenge, one might argue? If so, it is a challenge that APH as a caring, considerate employer was more than willing to face up to.
The scheme -like most government schemes!- is perhaps more confusing than it might be, but there is help available to help potential participants to implement such a scheme for their employees.

Welcome to Australia

Australia reveals that it's “open for business following” the floods in southern Queensland and the cyclone that hit parts of the tropical north. Despite this, tourists are enjoying a warm Aussie welcome and are experiencing the stunning beaches, reef and rainforests of Queensland as part of their Australian holiday.
In the areas still affected, Working Holiday Visa holders are being encouraged to assist with reconstruction efforts by volunteering their time. If the volunteer work falls under the definition of 'specified work' and is conducted within an eligible part of regional Australia, it can count towards the 88 days of work visa holders must undertake in order to be eligible for a second Working Holiday Visa.
Examples of construction work qualifying as 'specified work' include demolition of buildings, trench digging, earth moving and residential and non residential repairs.
There are also paid work opportunities in these areas which would also help secure a Working Holiday Visa extension.
Also, the Australian government has announced fast-track processing of 457 visa applications specifically for reconstruction jobs in flood-affected areas, providing quick access to...

Do not try the water

How many times have you heard people say: “Oh, I had a terrible time abroad! It must have been the foreign food! I had a gippy tummy! It really spoiled my holiday!” But was it the food? Or was it something else? Perhaps the water? Trying water in a foreign country can really cause health problem from the mild to the quite severe.
And it is not just micro-organisms that can cause the problems. I have seen it claimed that the origin of the term gippy tummy comes from people drinking water which had a high gypsum content which gave them an upset stomach. Hence the term gyppy or gippy tummy.
And there are even parts of Britain where, from time to time, warnings are given out to the public not to drink tap water without boiling it due to amoebic infection of the water supply, so even in so-called advanced countries, you cannot always rely on the drinking water supply being 100% potable.
So what can you do to protect yourself? Be very careful about what you drink and where you drink it. For example, never buy drinks from street vendors with open containers, and never buy a drink from a street vendor if he or she offers you ice. You cannot know the source of the water for the ice, so it is best...

teabags or travel insurance

Over 12 million British tourists are planning to visit friends and family abroad this year but new research by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office shows that young people are more likely to buy a present for their host than take out a travel insurance policy.
The survey shows a third of people did not take out travel insurance the last time they stayed with family and friends overseas. Over three quarters (77%) of those who stated they were visiting friends and family this year said that saving money is a key factor in this decision. However not taking out comprehensive travel insurance cover is often a false economy as people could face serious financial difficulty if they need medical treatment or lose valuable possessions.
Minister for Consular Affairs, Jeremy Browne, said: “With over 5 million Britons living abroad, people are increasingly making the most of opportunities to visit their loved ones across the world. However, it’s vital to understand that staying in someone’s home does not make you exempt from encountering serious problems. Take the same steps before you go as you would for any other holiday, such as taking out travel insurance and doing some pre-trip research, to ensure...

Have you ever wondered the exact route your plane will take when you go on your next holiday? Or have you ever looked up, saw a jetliner flying high above your house and thought: “I wonder where THEY are going?”
Now you can answer both of those questions and a whole lot more when you visit the website www.planefinder.net.

Because when you visit the site you will see a map of the world. You can use the cursor controls to visit any part of the world and you can watch the planes as they fly over that part of the world in real time. You can also zoom in or zoom out, as you wish.

Halloween Holiday

Autumn mists, medieval villages and the prospect of ghosts galore combine to make Riveria di Rimini the perfect place for an atmospheric Halloween break.
So, who might have left their spiritual stamp on this region? There's the tail of ruler condemned to hell for eternity; the ghost of an albino child whose cries have, it is reported, been captured by TV film crews; Francesca di Rimini – who was immortalised in Dante's The Divine Comedy - and a convicted occultist.

These ghostly (or ghastly?) stories bring to life the centuries-old historic sites which still thrive in the region. Enter the town of Rimini through the Arch of Augustus, which dates back to 27 BC and head through the town to the 13th Century Malatesta Temple. The tarot may help unravel some of the temple's strange symbolism, specially commissioned by the City's ruler, Sigismondo Malatesta, who was excommunicated by the Pope for his debauchery and heresy and condemned to hell for all eternity. (Oops!)
Continuing your trip through Rimini's town centre, you will spot skeletons sleeping in the mosaic floors of the 2nd century"Surgeon's House". History buffs can check out the collection of...
