APH Resort Guides at a Glance:
Banff Sunshine
Overview
Sunshine’s claim to fame is that it has "100 per cent natural snow". Most of the runs are located above 2,000 metres,
so the there’s no need for the manmade stuff. There are excellent intermediate runs and fantastic advanced stuff - if you dare…
Terrain
Sunshine has some of the best runs in the Canadian Rockies. Goat’s Eye Mountain is littered with long, wide blue runs, and there’s
a good choice of green stuff too. If you’re feeling brave, the double-black diamonds here are superb.
Recommended run
The one that everyone talks about here is Delirium Dive. This super steep chute requires total commitment and tons of skill.
You won’t be allowed near it without an avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe - and should really take a guide. Good luck.
Ski-in, ski-out?
Like all the Banff resorts, it’s a bit of a mission to get to the hill. Banff town itself is 20-minutes away and there’s a free shuttle bus.
Cost of living
Beers and burgers are cheap as chips. Expect to pay about £4-£5 for lunch.
Nightlife
For apres beers, head to Mad Trapper’s Saloon at the top of the Sunshine gondola.
If you fancy a taste of North American "cultchar", head to Wild Bill’s, where you’ll find live country and western music and line dancing.
Alternative activities
There’s a lot to do away from the slopes, including dog-sledding, snowshoeing and ice skating. Banff is located in a national park, so the scenery here is stunning.
Family friendly
The facilities for children are excellent here. Ski school programmes and plenty of beginners’ slopes make it a great choice if you’re all of mixed ability.
