APH Resort Guides at a Glance:
Rusutsu, Japan

Overview
Japan is the latest must-ski destination, and Rusutsu is one of the reasons why. Located on the north island of Hokkaido (a couple of hours’ drive from Niseko), there is more snow here than you have ever seen. Every day here is a powder day - almost without fail. On top of that you get quirky culture and spectacular scenery.

Terrain
There are 37 runs spread across three mountains - East, West and Mt Isola. You’ll find slopes to suit all skill levels, ranging from gorgeous, wide open cruisers to tight stuff through the trees.

Recommended run
If you’re in a mixed ability group, head over to the East Mountain. This is where you’ll find the mellowest pistes and some steep off-piste that cuts through the trees.

Ski-in, ski-out?
Yep. There’s plenty of accommodation to choose from, including Western-style hotels, to more traditional Japanese hotel rooms, and log cabins.

Cost of living
Japan has a reputation for being quite expensive, but a lunchtime bowl of ramen noodles and a drink will cost you about £6.

Nightlife
The apres scene here is pretty low-key. The hotels have various bars and restaurants to choose from, but Japanese skiers tend to head off for a soak and an early night (see below).

Alternative activities
There’s quite a lot to keep you occupied away from the slopes - including dog sledding, ice skating and natural hot baths called onsen.

Family friendly
There are ski schools here, but you should make sure that English is spoken. Come here in February and head to the city of Sapporo for the annual ice festival.
