APH Resort Guides at a Glance: Chamonix
Overview If you like long, steep, challenging runs, you'll love Cham'. In contrast to the purpose-built French resorts, it's more of a hassle to get to the slopes, but once you're there you'll find unforgettable skiing.
This place has some of the best backcountry in Europe, but make sure you take a guide. If you're coming in a mixed group, though, there's plenty to keep intermediates and beginners smiling...
Terrain Long, steep and as scary as you want it. If you're looking for mellow cruisy stuff, head up to Le Tour at the top of the Chamonix Valley.
Recommended run The Vallee Blanche - arguably the best backcountry run in Europe. Not for the feint-hearted.
Ski-in, ski-out? Getting to the slopes is not as quick and easy as the purpose-built resorts, but there are plenty of buses.
Cost of living Expect to pay around £6 for spag' bol' at the on-slope restaurants. However, if you're eating in Chamonix itself, it doesn't have to cost the earth. Try Bumblebee, which does great vegetarian dishes too.
Nightlife Evenings are really lively here. Join the après crowds who flock to the centre of Cham' each afternoon. Don't blame us if you're still here come Midnight. Try the Pub, Bar le Moulin, or Dérapage for something quieter.
Alternative activities There's a good network of Nordic skiing trails around the base of the valley..
