APH Resort Guides at a Glance:
Les Arcs
Overview
Tons of terrain, buzzing nightlife and good lift facilities make this ideal for mixed-ability groups. Les Arcs consists of four resort units, linked by road, providing door-step skiiing.
The architecture isn’t the most inspiring, but the locals are friendly.
Terrain
Les Arcs is linked to La Plagne - another big ski area on the opposite side of the valley - by the Vanoise Express cable car.
Between the two of them you’ve got everything covered - miles of corduroy, steep off-piste and excellent beginner slopes.
Recommended run
If you’re after a challenge, take the Aguille Rouge-Le Pré run, which has over 2,000 metres of vertical drop.
Strong intermediates will love the tree runs above Vallandry; beginners should go to Arc 1800.
Ski-in, ski-out?
Yes, yes, yes!
Cost of living
Like a lot of the big European resorts, it’s not cheap here. A bottle of house wine will cost about £12 - which is pricy by French standards.
Nightlife Arc 1800 is the liveliest of the four resorts. Head to the J.O. bar for late-night action, or the Red Hot Saloon for live music.
Alternative activities
It’s not great for off-slope action. Head to Bourg-St-Maurice for the Saturday market, or take a walk up the Nancroix valley.
Family friendly
The ski school facilities for youngsters are very good. Most places have English-speaking instructors; try the children’s area at Arc 1800, which has a sledging track.
